At the time of Umayyad conquest of Sindh in the early 8th century, Zutt (Jats) dominated regions of Makran and Turan (including Qiqan, modern Kalat), as well as land as far as west bank of Indus river, where cities of Mansura and Multan were located. The region from Mansura to Makran was mainly populated by Jats and according to Ibn Khordadbeh, Jats safeguarded the entire trade route in this region which was known as bilād al-Zāt (land of the Jats). The region of Makran had a significant number of Zutt at the time (or before) the Muslim conquest, whowhich at that time was part of Sindh, they had moved eastward into present day Sindh province as well in the following centuries. Goeje says Zutts were a people originating from Sindh and claims they were distributed throughout the Sassanid Empire. Al-Khwarizmi also elucidates their origins, attributing their roots to Sind and noting the Arabicization of their original name, Jit, to Zuṭṭ and further highlights that the Zutts were employed to protect badhraqa (roads).
