Sub-group

Recently I have noticed alot of complaints about userbox migration and how users must constantly update their userboxes. So I came up with an idea for a subgroup which is devoted entirely to updating the addresses. I haven't figured out a name for this group yet. Whether this group gets off the ground or not is dependant on support (I really don't know how this process works). If you're interested in the group the add

User:The Dark Side/Original userboxes/Helpful

to you page or leave your name. If you just want to say something about this, then say it. A list of users needing this kind of help can be found here. A list of moved userboxes can be found here Thank you for your time. --The Dark Side 03:06, 2 January 2007 (UTC)

Some display help

I've received some feed back that my userboxes bleed into the wiki "user page" template ... even though as best I can tell I am using the same Mozilla Firefox browser as the viewer who pointed this out to me. I am not certain whether the problem is coming from here or here. Thanks in advance for your help! Keesiewonder 18:16, 14 January 2007 (UTC)

What happens to ideas

I created userboxes but I never heard anything, I placed them on the ideas page but they are now in archive (so the images don't work now).

Try putting them on the Wikipedia talk:Userboxes/New Userboxes page. - Aerobird Target locked - Fox One! 16:25, 25 January 2007 (UTC)

People don't always respond unless you're asking them to make one. If you want to see who's using your userbox add
<includeonly></includeonly>
to the userbox template page. The just check the category and whoever is listed there uses your userbox. --The Dark Side 18:46, 25 January 2007 (UTC)

This user (comes from / lives in / lived in)

Something that I just noticed on the German wiki that might be useful here. To overcome the need for separate "This user lives in" and "This user comes from" userboxes, many userboxes contain extra functionality that covers all of these possiblities. For example, when the German userbox de:Benutzer:Vorlage/aus Deutschland is used without giving any parameters, it is the same as User Germany (This user comes from Germany), but if you say it is the same as User Germany res (This user lives in Germany). Saying alt=3 says "This user once lived in Germany". Other options are there for gender (Benutzer/Benutzerin) and even an option for what image you want to show (the flag or the coat of arms). Definitely worth considering here. - 52 Pickup 17:30, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

Here's what I came up with:

 This user {} Malta.

You can change the {} to something meanginful by adding | to the end of the address. Note the |. This would create the following:

This user was born in Malta.

This is a list of the current option:

Number Result
User:The Dark Side/1 was born in
User:The Dark Side/2 comes from
User:The Dark Side/3 lives in
User:The Dark Side/4 lived in

If this is what you were thinking of, then I will just create ,,, and to use instead of , etc. I will also move the templates to wikispace. --The Dark Side 22:17, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

Yes, something like that. My only suggested change would be to have option 2 (comes from) as the default setting, so anyone already using the userbox is not adversely effected. The different settings can also be linked to different categories ("Wikipedians from Malta" and "Maltese Wikipedians"). - 52 Pickup 07:23, 2 February 2007 (UTC)
I figured out what they had going on in the German wiki. Most of the key words are in English so I was able to copy their idea. This is my second try at it.

 This user comes from Malta.

Here's where the difference lays.

 This user lives in Malta.

This user was born in Malta.

This user used to live in Malta.

Unfortunately I'm not able to put the coat of arms as an alterate option as most seem to be copyright protected. --The Dark Side 02:36, 4 February 2007 (UTC)
Yep, that's it. The alternate image feature is not so important, you've got the important areas covered. - 52 Pickup 09:16, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

Welcome to Wikipædia. To make a user template you simply copy the codes from this page, and fill in the variable slots with your own information. You then plce the customized codework into a blank page in the right namespace and save it. THen do with it as you would any other template. Leave a message on my talk page if you need any elaboration or assitance.--Whytecypress 02:12, 22 February 2007 (UTC)

help

for this userbox:

0YThis Wikipedian was born on 23 May 2024 and is 0 years, 0 months, and 0 days old.

How do I set it to my age?? I cant figure it out. My birthday is February, 28th 1991, and for some reason, it can't configure my birthday. "THROUGH FIRE, JUSTICE IS SERVED!" 02:16, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

You can set your age through this:

Which appears as this:

33YThis Wikipedian was born on 28 February 1991 and is 33 years, 2 months, and 26 days old.

Notice of fair-use images on userboxes

Hey guys. I created this temporary template to post on editor talk pages for those who use fair images in userboxes (it's against policy). Programming userboxes and userbox migration

Hi there. I'm having a dicussion with User:ZeroOne about moving Template:User php and friends into userspace. In my opinion, these particular programming userboxes should not be subject to userbox migration, since PHP is the language used to write MediaWiki and therefore has some potential relevance to building Wikipedia. I'd say the same thing for HTML, JavaScript, CSS, and SQL, since Wikipedia is implemented using all of those technologies. The utility of these userboxes to building the encyclopedia is in finding active contributors who can provide technical knowledge regarding proposed changes to the wiki software and insight into whether certain issues can be solved with existing technology on-wiki or if they require a bug report or enhancement request. I'd say that things like Template:User cobol are obviously not relevant to building the encyclopedia, but programming that is directly related to the software that runs the site is. Mike Dillon 20:08, 1 April 2007 (UTC)

I'd put the emphasis on the words potential relevance. So they're not relevant, just potentially so. You could go to Category:User js-4 and post a question whether they want to help do something with MediaWiki to all users listed there but I just cannot see that being very effective. I think if people want to help Wikipedia in HTML/CSS/JS/any such thing they will find a way themselves. --ZeroOne (talk | @) 20:33, 1 April 2007 (UTC)

Merging of userbox listings

I have noticed that there are three templates for userbox navigation, all at the bottom of User:UBX. If one is searching the directories for possible user boxes for his page, he would need to scour through about four pages for each topic. Multiple users and the wikiproject all have pages full of boxes that are rather redundant and unneeded. If one created a new box, he wouldn't want to add it to all of the pages, one is enough. I heard Rfrisbie is moving his boxes, but I think User:UBX should be deleted and it would be simplest if all userboxes are listed in the Wikiproject Userboxes directory. Thank you, Reywas92Talk 22:56, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

Look at my userboxes, please?

I've created a bunch of shoddy userboxes at User:ZachPG/Userboxes to add ranks to the Marine Corps' list, as all the other services have them.

Can anybody teach me how to make the sizes of the pictures uniform, how to darken the blue background and red border, and/or offer any other suggestions on how to make those good enough to add to their own pages and be listed under Wikipedia:Userboxes/Military? ZachPG 20:29, 15 April 2007 (UTC)

Does this format of userbox grouping work?

On my user page User:MrMacMan I couldn't seem to find a way to get the Babel userbox to behave with the other boxes... so I tried moving it around. I looked at the templates and didn't see one that made the babel userbox format properly so I moved it to the right and made 3 boxes per row. Does that work or might it break in other users browsers... or does it just look bad? Thanks for your opinion. MrMacMan Talk 23:47, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

Unwanted(?) inclusion in user category pages

Including one of the Wikipedia:Userboxes/Location/Europe boxes leads to the userbox itself Wikipedia:Userboxes/Location/Europe page being listed in the user category page. But the box page isn't a user, of course... How do we fix this? Surrounding the category statement in each box with a <noinclude> clause? Please comment. --Wernher 21:30, 24 April 2007 (UTC)

I've seen this handled by making the category link the default value of a {category} parameter instead of just including the link directly. For example:
<includeonly>{}</includeonly>
Instead of:
<includeonly></includeonly>
That way, the category can be suppressed by doing , or similar. Mike Dillon 21:46, 24 April 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for the quick response! Now, the logical followup question is whether the scheme you suggest will put a (significantly) heavier load on the WP servers? --Wernher 22:48, 24 April 2007 (UTC)
Nope. Someone would just have to change the pages like Wikipedia:Userboxes/Location/Europe that aren't meant to be included in categories to pass "category=". Mike Dillon 00:20, 25 April 2007 (UTC)
I've made this change for all of the userboxes on that page. There is still inconsistency over whether the userboxes themselves are in the categories, but I tried not to change that since I'm not sure whether there is agreement about that. The ability to use "category=" shouldn't be controversial, since all that you have to do to keep a page in the category is to not use "category=". Adding this functionality also has the benefit of letting users choose different categories or override category sort keys embedded in the userbox templates (e.g. PAGENAME, which conflicts with the use of DEFAULTSORT). Putting a link to the userbox IN the userbox

I've been experimenting with putting a link in the userbox to the actual userbox page. The reason is that people often say to themselves "That's a great userbox... I got to get me one of those". And then they begin to edit another person's userpage trying to locate the exact userbox they want, occasionally forgetting to put "template" in front of certain ones. So I got myself thinking... why not put a link to the userbox page within the userbox itself? So, I've put a † at the end of the text, as follows:

Of course, what this allows is a viewer to click on the link and immediately have the address for the userbox in question.

Standardizing the format UserBox list pages.

I really believe that all the UserBox list pages should be standardized with a single format. The format I propose uses the templatestemplate:Usbk and template:Usbkc. (template:Usbkc is used when parameters are in use in the Userbox) These are the same templates that are being used on the Wikipedia talk:Userboxes/New Userboxes page. I had made a whole page with this format at Wikipedia:Userboxes/WikiProjects. Before the change of format on that page, some of the userboxes appear to be corrupted. After the change in format those userboxes were corrected by the simplified templates. I know it would take work to standardize them, however I am up to the challenge of making these pages look right. I hope no one is against the idea of the new format as this I feel would the best one to use since it is being used to list new userboxes and it is a very simple template to use. If anyone has any comments on this please post here at: Wikipedia_talk:Userboxes#Standardizing_the_format_UserBox_list_pages. Sawblade05 05:45, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

Userboxes on userpage, via template

I have a question, and I'm wondering if someone can help me. I would like to add a couple of userboxes on my userpage. But instead of putting them all on the main page code, I'd like to create a seperate user subpage, which acts like the main template for my userboxes. Wikiproject members

I depopulated on of your redirects to your member banner (UB - which had 4 links) , replacing it with Ub, which had 40 or 50 links to it. This has been done to mave UB into a shortcut for Uw-ublock, which is very widely used (hopefully substed). This will make the task of blocking accounts with inappropriate usernames far far easier, not having to type out the long form of the template every time. The redirect will now be fully protected as a high risk template, which may be transcluded to hundreds of pages at any one time. ViridaeTalk 02:55, 19 July 2007 (UTC)

For the minimalist

I was recently invited to take a look at, and help with a new project, that provides the function of Userboxes, but caters to "minimalists" who prefer a smaller box, without pictures. (Okay I'm a girl, so I can't imagine that, but I do understand those people are out there   )

So, where would be a good place to announce the project, Wikipedia:WikiProject Keep It Simple? Would it be appropriate to put it somewhere in this project's space as an alternative? (Note that the project is very "young" and really does not have a great deal of boxes/labels yet, so it needs to grow quite a bit before it would have alternatives for most popular/major categories.) Thanks for any advice you can give! ArielGold 10:51, 28 August 2007 (UTC)

Identifying userboxes in using CSS class names

Is anyone working on making sure that as many userboxes as possible share a CSS class name (wikipediauserbox)? I have noticed that a lot of templates do not contain this class name.

If most or all userboxes included this class name, then people who don’t care for them could add display: none to all userboxes in their personal stylesheet. It would also allow specialized software and bots to recognize userboxes in generated HTML.

If whether or not someone is already working on this, I will offer my assistance. — David Remahl (talk) 11:02, 21 November 2007 (UTC)
