Naming edit
Articles may be named "X", "X Waterfall", or "X Falls", depending on location and most common usage. "X falls". "X (falls)", "X waterfall" and "X (waterfall)" are not recommended.
Multiple waterfalls with the same name edit
Due to the fact that there are countless waterfalls in the world with the same name, the following method of disambiguation is proposed:
- The most important waterfall can stay at the undisambiguated title, lesser known ones add a qualifier.
- In practice, most waterfalls needing disambiguation should be identified by the smallest appropriate political entity.
- Always use parentheses for the disambiguator for U.S. waterfalls, not a comma. For example Bridal Veil Falls (Alaska) not Bridal Veil Falls, Alaska.
- A waterfall can be identified uniquely as a fall on a river. It should be named with the name of the river following in parentheses. For example: Nevada Falls (Merced) for Nevada Falls in Yosemite National Park.
Article structure edit
Lead Paragraph edit
The first paragraph should be a self-contained description including the most important things to know; name(s) - both historic and current - in bold, location (continent/countries), and notable facts about the waterfall, such as tallest, second tallest, widest, etc.
Infobox edit
Please see {{Infobox Waterfall}} and follow the instructions. Unused fields will not be displayed.
Natural History edit
Mention distinctive natural features of the waterfall.
Geology edit
The evolution of some waterfalls has been well explored. Such information should be placed here, with a suitable discussion of all POVs when possible.
History edit
Describe what is known about the history/naming of the waterfall, along with a description of the scientific efforts.
References and External links edit
Preferably refer to history, ecology, public policy, books, websites, etc.
Images edit
There should be at least one picture, preferably a typical view. Important waterfalls should have additional pictures illustrating their notable features.
Indexing edit
Every waterfall article should be indexed in list of waterfalls, and indexed in list of rivers by continent.
Categories edit
Every article should have a category. At a minimum, list in Category:country waterfalls. Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (categories) dictates that the categories should be named Waterfalls in _____" rather than the commonly used Waterfalls of ___". If the country has smaller political divisions in the waterfalls category, use one of those instead. (e.g. Category:Waterfalls in Oregon instead of Category:Waterfalls in the United States).
