Marie Celeste

Tell me why the alteration is not constructive. As explained, there is a widespread and erroneous belief that the real ship was called Marie Celeste. See the Talk page for the explanation. My alteration explains how the confusion arose and is more useful to someone who has searched for "Marie Celeste" than a simple redirect. Someone who has done that and finds himself on the Mary Celeste page might come to the conclusion that Wikipedia has made a mistake. If explaining the source of the confusion is unconstructive, then we live in a strange world. I'll just pop this onto the article Talk page so we might get a second opinion or consensus. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.141.113.235 (talk) 21:36, 21 October 2015 (UTC)

"Thing is there is a article already on Marie Celeste-if you wanted you could go to the talk page of Mary Celeste and ask for the name change instead of changing the redirect like that as they are the same page. Wgolf (talk) 21:37, 21 October 2015 (UTC)"
Thing is: there isn't a (sic) article already on Marie Celeste; there is just a redirect to "Mary Celeste." Have you tried it? They are, indeed, the same page, but shouldn't be. That's the whole point of the alteration. The link to Marie Celeste that you have provided goes to Mary Celeste. One is a fictional ship, the other is a real one. Do you follow what's happening here? If someone who, as many people in the world outside Wikipedia do, believes firmly that there was a real ship called Marie Celeste, and googles it, he or she will find him or herself on the Wikipedia page called "Mary Celeste." He or she might not understand why, especially as it is not until a very long way down the article before Conan Doyle's introduction of the ambiguity is explained. The alteration I made will take people to a page entitled "Marie Celeste" where they will be disabused and then directed to the page entitled "Mary Celeste." A small note at the top of the Mary Celeste page will also be helpful for those who arrive there by a different route. Why would you not want people to be able to do those things?
IIRC I was invited to discuss the matter here. I shall, therefore, keep it here.
Could I ask you once again to just explain why my alteration is not constructive? That's all; why it is not constructive. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.141.113.235 (talk) 22:49, 21 October 2015 (UTC)

Re your nom for speedy deletion here: almost certainly not notable, so no argument there but please explain how is this G3 vandalism? Just looking at your talk page here, there a quite few queries over your speedy deletion nominations. I think it would be wise for you to take a break and to review your understanding of policy here before continuing to nominate. Plutonium27 (talk) 03:56, 27 October 2015 (UTC)

(Copied from reply on User talk:Plutonium27)

Well I almost put db-person but the high political ranking of him (or apparently) and how it was added by someone with the same name look like they were doing a vandalism about themselves that was not true. Wgolf (talk) 04:01, 27 October 2015 (UTC)
Please do not remove edits from your talk page like this. Nominating articles for deletion and any subsequent and ongoing discussions need to be preserved whilstr the process is udnerway.Your explanation is not particularly clear but from what can be understood it is clear that you urgently need to review speedy deletion policies for vandalism - and ideally check your understanding with an admin - before nominating any more articles under this category. If, having done so, you still would consider this article vandalism, then get back to me and I will explain in terms I hope you can understand why it is not. And I see an IP account went on to nominate this article for deletion under A1 (and without removing the G3) just before you replied to my talk page (and deleted my above message). Are you operating another account? Be honest Plutonium27 (talk) 04:13, 27 October 2015 (UTC)
@Plutonium27: No I'm not-I didn't put up the other deletion for it-I didn't see that either. Anyway-I thought it they put fake info like that it would be a db-vand. Also I simply replied so I was deleting that saying I replied didn't think it be a big deal if I deleted it. Wgolf (talk) 04:15, 27 October 2015 (UTC)
I would like to say I'm sorry if I did cause problems there, I just thought that db-vand would of made more sense given the false info about someone-and I have no clue who the anonymous IP was. So again sorry about that part with the deletion tag. Wgolf (talk) 04:22, 27 October 2015 (UTC)
Your answer does not entirely clear up what is going on but it does show, sorry to say, that you are not competent to nominate articles for speedy deletion at this time. You obviously care about Wikipedia and so I'm sure you don't want to be doing anything to muck it up. So please do not nominate any more until you have proved to yourself - and preferably a mentor - that you thoroughly understand and can apply the policies correctly. Marking an article like this as vandalism is quite a serious mistake and - as I've pointed out and as can be seen from your talk page (removed messages included) - you have had some ongoing problems with nominations. If, however, you do decide to carry on, I shall have little choice but to get WP:Administrators noticeboard involved. And once again - please do not delete talk page notices about ongoing issues and extant articles you are involved with. It really does not make your actions any less visible but it does look like frantic haste to bury a mistake. As for the IP, such timing of their action - and its failure to removed the G3 - does raise questions so I will be doing a quick look-through of edit patterns to check all is ok. Plutonium27 (talk) 04:39, 27 October 2015 (UTC)

Thanks

Thanks for patrolling Strolling Jim without tagging it for deletion or something. I've come to dread the patrolling process part of creating new articles because somebody who doesn't know horses almost always gets ahold of them and then tags them for not being notable or whatever, when they are notable within their breed or sport. Anyway, thanks! White Arabian mare (Neigh) 00:27, 30 October 2015 (UTC)

Hello Wgolf. Thank you for reviewing my page on Director Sunny Moodie. His first film Wild Hearts screened at the Berlinale and is pending release with a major European player (read in Screen International). I pride myself on spotting notable talent early in their careers. I also know he was invited to join the Directors Guild of the UK (one of the youngest ever) through my own relationship with that guild. Editing Project 562

Hello! I've been editing the page on Project 562 (I'm not affiliated with this project, just interested.) I tried to address the issues in the banner at the top by adding some references, changing some phrasing, and creating a link to the page from the following: "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photography_by_indigenous_peoples_of_the_Americas."

Would you mind taking a look and possibly removing the banner? Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Riotsquirrel (talkcontribs) 01:55, 10 November 2015 (UTC)

ArbCom elections are now open!

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Tag on Christopher Felver article

Hello Wgolf,

I see you did some work on the Christopher Felver article. I have done quite a bit of editing/research for that article recently and believe it is quite objective at this point. I do not think the tag about it being a possible autobiography is relevant anymore. Also, the issue of links to/from the article is being addressed. I'd like to get your input on this. Thanks a lot, and have a happy holiday season, with best wishes for 2016! Ray Jameson (talk) 03:38, 5 January 2016 (UTC)

I noticed that you have tagged it for deletion and maintenance.

Keep in mind that it's generally recommended that new articles be left alone for a period of time, maybe 10-15 minutes, before they are tagged, as the author may still be working on the article. Clear-cut CSD candidates should naturally however be immediately tagged as such.

Thanks. Σσς(Sigma) 02:19, 19 January 2016 (UTC)

Museum Slager sources

Hi Wgolf, thank you for reviewing my article about Museum Slager. You added a 'primary sources' tag, since you believe the article relies too much on references to such sources. However, the article is mainly based on one secondary resource, namely the book which I've mentioned in the literature section. While writing her book, the author of course based her research on primary resources (mainly the museum archives, and family records of the painters), but also did a lot of literature research. However, since this book of course is a secondary source, I believe it to be ok when the Wikipedia article is based on information in the book. (For your information: the article is translated from the article I wrote for the Dutch Wikipedia.) But perhaps I misunderstand the meaning of the tag, or I'm not familiar enough in the ways Wikipedians like sources being cited. I'm not a regular Wikipedia editor. Thanks for looking into this! Best regards, --Christian.van.der.ven (talk) 19:08, 21 January 2016 (UTC)

Nomination for notable awards

Hi. Regarding the two PRODs you removed for the producer and director of Bear Story, your rationale was "nominated for a notable award". I'm not particularly concerned, but I wondered whether you're looking at a criterion other than the one at WP:ANYBIO, "The person has received a well-known and significant award or honor, or has been nominated for one several times [emphasis mine]. —Largo Plazo (talk) 20:40, 25 January 2016 (UTC)

Romance of the Pink Panther

I missed the whole discussion, several months ago, where Romance of the Pink Panther was agreed to be deleted. In my opinion, the decision was absolutely incorrect; there IS precedent of having articles on unmade and unproduced films, as this entire relevant category will attest to: Category:Cancelled films

Furthermore, despite mention of doing so in the deletion discussion, no one ever incorporated ANY of the information unique to the deleted article into the main redirect. Therefore, in light of this, I'm asking to restore the article, because there really was no need to delete it. I won't do anything until you respond either way -- don't want to cause a kerfuffle. I redirected to the existing page, Ronald Cohen (disambiguation). Note that another editor challenged any content on the composer Ron Cohen, because there are no sources. I am the editor proposing deletion, and I don't know the formal rules for notifying previous editors, but I think it would be good for someone to notify all editors who previously contributed content on the composer, that the content on the composer is being proposed for deletion because of a lack of sources. Foreign language pages

Dear Wgolf,

Whenever you come across a non-English article, like you did at Du Lịch Nha Trang, you should run it through Google Translate before listing it at pages needing translation. Most non-English articles posted to the English Wikipedia are eligible for speedy deletion as being devoid of context, entirely promotional, or a duplicate of an article already on the English Wikipedia. In the case of Du Lịch Nha Trang, the Vietnamese content was an advertisement for a tour package and therefore eligible for speedy deletion as spam.

Thanks,

Thanks for fixing this, I didn't realize that article listed Edouard Brandon as a living person. You are right: he has been dead a long time! Msteven1IN (talk) 23:34, 22 April 2016 (UTC)

Malaysian pages

Actually you should let it be. Why you make things complicated? We should know the differences between constituency/electoral district page and city/town/district/community/census division page. For example Tasik Biru (state constituency) page should be differentiated with Tasik Biru, although at this moment, Tasik Biru is empty page. To be noted, we will have future users who will contribute to create new article about Tasik Biru. Then, what will Tasik Biru page looks like. Well, it should has town information and whatsover relevant thing. So, Tasik Biru page is not only about Tasik Biru constituency but should have population subsection, economy section, politic section, social section like many town-related articles do. I hope you can revert back your move action. We should make page name look standardized. Otherwise, other users, readers and I myself get confused. You should look example about electoral district in Canada, and see how they name their article page about electoral district and they separate them from town/city/district/community/census division article page. Alexander Iskandar (talk) 18:33, 23 April 2016 (UTC)

Alexander Iskandar-okay well maybe see what other people think first, I'm not familiar with Malaysia terminology so yeah.Wgolf (talk) 18:34, 23 April 2016 (UTC)

I think the best way we can do is to make disambiguated page, although Tasik Biru (town) still red links at this moment. It is not easy to create many good articles (especially Malaysian-related pages) alone unless we have good dedicated network of contributors who will join make Malaysian-articles stand high in this English Wikipedia (dominated by English-speaking world related pages). Alexander Iskandar (talk) 18:38, 23 April 2016 (UTC)

At this moment, Tasik Biru (or any relevant example) page should look like below:

Tasik Biru may refer to:

For your information, I refer this official link to edit official result. The problem is how to cite this link. Maybe you should try access this link --> [1] to understand things clear. You can choose any constituency, year column to get the official result. Alexander Iskandar (talk) 19:22, 23 April 2016 (UTC)

Anstenoptilia marmarodactyla and Anstenoptilia marmorodactyla

I'd like to explain the change that you reverted earlier (and which I have just reverted back). The two spellings of this scientific name are widely used in different places. The Wikipedia articles were arranged so that A. marmarodactyla redirected to A. marmorodactyla. In fact, as demonstrated by the citation I added to Dyar's original publication, the version with 'a' is correct. I therefore edited both pages so the content was on A. marmarodactyla and A. marmorodactyla was the redirect. My comments on the change were perhaps unclear and I see that you reverted just one of the two pages, resulting in a loop. I have gone back and restored my edits, because 1) this is the original and hence, by zoological code, correct spelling, and 2) because it fixed the loop.

Please let me know if you are aware of something I missed. Many thanks.

Prakash Neupane

Web-based appeared in Special:NewPagesFeed, and had a one-liner biography of Prakash Neupane when I looked at it. I assumed it had just been created, and with the wrong title - I moved it back when I realised something was amiss. --McGeddon (talk) 19:49, 25 April 2016 (UTC)

McGeddon-might want to put Prakash Neupae as a csd for a redirect then-just in case that actually ever does become a article! It was on the new page feed because someone altered the article. Wgolf (talk) 19:51, 25 April 2016 (UTC)
Yeah, I already had. Didn't realise the new page feed also included cases where somebody replaced a redirect with a one-sentence article, though. Is that a bug, or are we meant to double-check edit histories before flagging an article for speedy deletion? --McGeddon (talk) 20:23, 25 April 2016 (UTC)

Speedy deletion neonmob

Yes this is my first Wikipedia article I was simply attempting to remove a red link by creating a page as written by the guidelines of Wikipedia. It is an article stub but it is better than no article at all. I am unable to add further information at this time but still believe with work it could be a valid page. Jarunee Suksawat

You correctly spotted that Jarunee Sooksawat was unsourced, but the comment "Questionable notability, seems to be completely original research" was off the mark. That article was actually a cut-and-paste of Jarunee Suksawat, which the same user initially created by copying from Asian Fuse Wiki, which you also prodded, and which I rewrote based on reliable sources (deleting the initial revisions). I've turned the "new" article into a redirect. Suksawat is definitely notable, she was one of the best known and most prolific Thai actresses of the 70s and 80s. I know lots of the pages we get are crap and you obviously do a lot a new page patrolling, but some of them are actually about notable topics and not recognising that can entrench our WP:Systemic bias. Mike Taylor (Montana)

Hi-there are probably several Mike Taylors who are politicians. I want to be more specific and keep the state (Montana) in the title to avoid any confusion. Many thanks-RFD (talk) 19:14, 29 April 2016 (UTC)

@RFD:-I do agree, although the Mike Taylor (politician) does seem to link to the right one. But yes there probably are tons as that is a common name. Wgolf (talk) 19:15, 29 April 2016 (UTC)

Kinesitherapy

Hi, sorry I've been messy. I thought this was a translation error at first (source in French language). I just updated the wikidata to add the equivalent in other languages. I think that there is indeed a need for merging. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jeandédé (talkcontribs) 19:27, 29 April 2016 (UTC)

To be more conservative as you suggested I added the elements from Kinesitherapy to Kinesiotherapy (I had removed them because most seem quite out of date). Left a message to the creator. And add a redirection.

Thanks

Thank you for helping with the supercentenarian articles. Some people have the notion that "World's Oldest Person" doesn't confer notability...despite the fact we keep adding citations to news articles which show that, yes, these people received significant media attention. --Sailor Haumea (talk) 20:11, 29 April 2016 (UTC)

Henry Day (Colonel)

Dear Wgolf,

thank you for your help with disambiguation of Henry Day (colonel) page.

I think that the page should read Henry Day (Colonel) but I can't figure out how to change the page and capitalize its title correctly without undoing your helpful edit.

Grateful if you could make this change or explain to me how it is done.

Megan Van Emden

I can't find any reference for

" Mueller, J. "Megan Van Emden saves child, earns nod from Biden". New York Times. 25 April 2016".

Other references are

"Megan Van Emden." Personal interview. 2 May 2016. "I Wouldn't Write an Autobiography". Scholastic Press, 2016.

Come on. That is not a sourced, cited article.

The article is an obvious autobiography (Given the content, references and username MVE4me). How does this person meet WP:BIO?

I strongly suspect the NYT reference was just made up given the circumstances surrounding the rest of the article.

This article should be deleted as per WP:BIO. It's fairly obvious it's just a teenage girl who's created a wikipedia article about her self. WP:AUTO forbids this.

Categories

Hallo, If you're removing {{uncat}} because you've added Category:Living people, please replace it by {{catimprove}}: that one category is never enough on its own, but in edits like this pair you've undone Postcard Cathy's work by leaving the article without any tag alerting editors to the need for more categories. I saw your message and I have added a new citation to the page can you please check if this will do? Mynameisdas (talk) 04:32, 9 May 2016 (UTC)

Erand Hoxha (actor)

Regarding this revert: Please see WP:BLPPROD, as it clearly states that a BLP-PROD template "once (properly) placed, it can only be removed if a reliable source is added". My re-addition of that template was merely a move countering vandalism, and not an attempt to PROD the article. --| Uncle Milty | talk | 21:04, 9 May 2016 (UTC)

@Uncle Milty:-yes I know-but the page didn't have a BLP prod, it had a normal prod, otherwise I wouldn't of reverted it. Wgolf (talk) 21:05, 9 May 2016 (UTC)

Yes, I should pay better attention. However, it should have been (and/or should be) BLP prodded. It still could be, I suppose. --| Uncle Milty | talk | 21:08, 9 May 2016 (UTC)

Notability of a musicology professor

Greetings, Wgolf. I'd like to solicit your assistance with an article you might remember. Last year, you placed a notability tag on the article for Anne Rasmussen. I've done a very miniscule amount of work with the article since then, and would like to do more. Do you have any specific pointers on how the assertion of notability for the article could be improved? MezzoMezzo (talk) 03:50, 12 May 2016 (UTC)
