November Esperanza Newsletter edit

Program Feature: Admin Coaching (needs coaches!)
Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach.

Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.

What's New?
The Tutorial Drive is a new Esperanza program! In an effort to make complicated processes on Wikipedia easier for everyone, Esperanza working to create and compile a list of tutorials about processes here on Wikipedia. Consider writing one!
A discussion on how Esperanza relates to the encyclopedia has been started; please add your thoughts.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  • The list of proposed programs has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  • There is now a new program: the Tutorial Drive! Consider writing a tutorial on something you are good at doing on Wikipedia.
  • The suggestion of adding a cohesive look to all the Esperanza pages is being considered; join the discussion if you are interested!
  • In order to make a useful interlanguage welcome template, those involved in translation projects will be asked what English Wikipedia policies are most important and confusing to editors coming from other language Wikipedias.
  • A discussion of Esperanza's role in Wikipedia is being held, with all thoughts of all Esperanzians wanted!
  • Shreshth91 informed everyone that he will be leaving the Esperanza council as life is rather busy; his spot will be filled by the runner up from the last election, HighwayCello.

Although having the newsletter appear on everyone's userpage is desired, this may not be ideal for everyone. If, in the future, you wish to receive a link to the newsletter, rather than the newsletter itself, you may add yourself to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Newsletter/Opt Out List.

My RfA: edit

Thank you so very much for voting support in my RfA. However, I have withdrawn due to reasons that a stressed user would withdraw under. I'm sorry I have failed you & your expectations. Thanks, Spawn Man 08:58, 10 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks edit

Hi there Halo... Thanks a lot for your kind words and 100% support during my recent RFA! I am sorry for the delay in getting back but part of the reason was that I am not good at making templates and partly I wanted to drop a personal thank you note. Those are quite impressive contributions you have listed on your page!! Do let me know if I can be of assistance to you at any time -- Lost(talk) 17:00, 10 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Response edit

Halo, stop being such a good editor. It's annoying. Go and vandalize, or troll, for a change. Or launch a personal attack. Or be incivil. Something I could tick you off for. But to be confronted with such a model of excellence is seriously a pain. ARRGH!!

Anyway, homely foolery (Shakespeare, would you believe) over - naw, I didn't think you were having a go at me. I'd made a foolish comment and felt I needed to apologise, and to clarify my other comments - what I really felt were the problems at that damned RFA, which seemed to have caused a lot more kerfuffle than it's worth. If adminship's no big deal, at what price should we put a mere RFA...anyway. Yep, all's well in my little corner of the Universe that is forever Moreschi. Your post is appreciated - just confirms my high opinion of you as an editor and admin that shall be hereafter (O.K, time to stop, this is getting pretentious). See you round. Article about Wikipedia Users edit

I am a freelance writer working on an article about the wide array of people who make Wikipedia their life, their passion, their pastime. Wikipedia “addicts” if you will. I’m looking for people just willing to tell their story of how they got sucked into the intellectual whirlwind that is Wikipedia; how you got started editing, how the obsession grew, and what you spend your time focusing on these days? Do you write articles from scratch? Is your main push toward one particular type of article? Do you patrol for typos and errors, or spend your time diligently fixing vandalism? Do you take part in the “social aspects” of Wikipedia; engaging in animated discussions or decorating your user page with all sorts of internet memes? Have you ever forced yourself to take a “Wikipedia break”? If so, what’s your 20/20 hindsight on the obsession? Basically I’m just trying to get an idea of what it’s like for various Wikipedia “addicts.” I'm particularly interested in speaking to you about your thoughts on Esperanza and the Wikipedia Kindness Campaign. If you are interested in participating, please email me at xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx 68.39.158.205 03:09, 11 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

RfA thanks edit

Thank you for the extra feathers on my wings!

Thank you so much, The Halo, for your support in my RfA, which passed on November 11, 2006, with a final tally of 82/0/2. I am humbled by the kind support of so many fellow Wikipedians, and I vow to continue to work and improve with the help of these new tools. Should you have any request, do not hesitate to contact me. thank you edit

Thank you for your support...
Thank you ever so much, The Halo, for your kind words and understanding in my time of need. I deeply appreciate your support, and I hope to be there for you, should you ever need help. — Kyoko

Hello The Halo, and thanks for your kind words. I wish I wasn't so fragile and that we didn't keep corresponding with each other only in times of need. I wasn't always this way, you know. Thanks again. --Kyoko 14:37, 12 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for that very interesting quote you left me on my talk page. In appreciation, I leave you the kindness award, in which you receive the apple =) .--Ed ¿Cómo estás? 02:00, 14 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

A Barnstar!
The Kindness Award of Ed

This Wikipedian has received the Kindness Award from Ed for going the extra mile to be kind to another person. Please read a nice story on kindness over here. As a reward, I offer this user a random piece of food. (I will never give the same food item out twice, so don't be jealous.)
I never knew you liked apples. According to my statement, I randomly pick food. =) Ed ¿Cómo estás? 02:14, 15 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hey edit

Hope the EA MfD isn't stressing you out too much, eh? riana_dzasta 12:07, 15 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Heh, they wouldn't dare! I understand that it's a lot of work, but I'm glad to see you sticking to your guns (unlike the multiple people who decided to leave today). At least the MfD is bringing some potential problems out into the open... riana_dzasta 12:15, 15 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
I like how you prefix my exams with 'nicer things'... :p One down, two to go. Biology was pretty good, I only guessed about 5 questions out of 75, so that's - good enough. Still got Chemistry (easy) and Maths (shudder) left to go, though. How've you been? riana_dzasta 12:45, 15 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
Wow, that sounds pretty neat. Hope you enjoy that! I'm outta here now, it's late, but don't let 'em get ya down, k? Take care :) riana_dzasta 12:59, 15 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

RFA Thanks edit

Thanks!
Thanks for your input on my (nearly recent) Request for adminship, which regretfully achived no consensus, with votes of 68/28/2. I am grateful for the input received, both positive and in opposition, and I'd like to thank you for your participation.

Banes edit

Hi, I noticed you closed down Banes's user page and archived his discussions. I was unaware that he had left Wikipedia, do you have any idea on what the reason was? Thanks, — Impi 15:01, 19 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Indeed, Daniel didn't say anything about it from looking at his last few contribs... (Which are only a few days old) KOS | talk 21:58, 19 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
How sad, I haven't talked to Daniel in quite a few days, last thing he told me was that life was great, and that he was on holiday. Oh well, I took a 4 month break, and became a better editor because of it, maybe the same will be true for him as well. Thanks for the reply. KOS | talk 05:06, 20 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
Sometimes it's better to bow out like that, rather than dragging it out. Anyway, thanks for the reply, hopefully he will decide to return someday. — Impi 07:58, 24 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'm glad you enjoy my comments. edit

I'm even more hilarious in IRC, though. --ElaragirlTalk|Count 14:14, 22 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Your support edit

I have to say that given the recent Esperanza discussions, that your support on my RfA means a lot to me. If successful, I hope to justify your support. Thanks, —Doug Bell talk 14:30, 22 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Don't mention it. I truely think you have the qualities that a good admin should have. I fact, the Esperanza discussions were one of the main reasons I did support, as you made reasonable arguements (although I don't agree with some of them ;) and followed through with what you thought was best for Wikipedia, which I hope even the most die-hard Esperanza supporter couldn't find you at fault for. I wish you the best of luck with the RfA :) Thε Halo Θ 14:42, 22 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Well done anyway edit

Hey Halo,

I know this has been a really stressful time for you, but thank you for staying with your convictions and working hard through this restructuring. Your opinions are always helpful and appreciated, and I hope you continue to participate! We'll miss you in the AC (if it stays around), so thanks for your hard work. -- Natalya 19:57, 22 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. :) Have a lovely weekend, Halo, I hope it's a very nice break. Good luck with everything! -- Natalya 16:29, 24 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Banes? edit

Do you know what happened to banes? I noticed that you were the one who put the retired sticker on his userpage. But I can't seem to find where he announced he was retiring. I hope he is okay. Please let me know if you don't mind. Thanks.__Seadog 20:07, 22 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

LIVE IRC CHARTER DEBATE edit

There are many proposals to change the charter floating around Esperanza right now. Let's talk about all of them in an Esperanza IRC charter "debate". I believe a good time would be exactly one week from today. In US Eastern Time, 5:30pm, next week, on Friday. What do you think? WikieZach| talk 04:28, 25 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Re: your message edit

I'm not really feeling well either. I'll try to work out how to word my wall of text without laying too much blame on your sister. (While she isn't entirely to blame for what happened, she isn't innocent either) Will (Tell me, is something eluding you, Sunshine?) 15:42, 15 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Get Well Wishes edit

Hi Halo, I'm not sure whether your last message was thanking me for wishing you well for your physical ailments, or if you were wishing me well for my emotional problems, but anyway, thank you. As a side note, I hope that I haven't hurt your feelings (or the feelings of the other AC members) in the discussions about how to reform Esperanza. I strongly believe in maintaining something on Wikipedia that acts as a resource for help and support, even though our personal approaches to this goal may differ. I hope you feel better soon. --Kyoko 04:48, 16 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi Halo, thanks for understanding. I hope you get well soon. --Kyoko 01:00, 18 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Request for clarification edit

Sir, I regret to bother you with this at this no doubt difficult time for you, and my sincerest hopes that your current circumstances resolve themselves quite happily. I am in the process of trying to ensure that some of the more deserving individuals in wikipedia are included in this years honors list, particularly those whose work has been of exceptional value to wikipedia. One editor who has much to our loss been forced to leave wikipedia by outside circumstances is I believe more than deserving of receiving the OBF for extraordinary work regarding the Cats project, that being as close to the OBE as I can likely get without copyright problems. It also occurs to me that some sort of official, if even post-retirement, promotion would be called for should this individual receive this recognition. It is my understanding that you may be more familiar with this most deserving person than I am, and I would appreciate any information you might be able to give me as to which particular service this individual refers to in their name, so that we can, if only post-retirement, give this deserving individual the honors that they are due. With your approval, and, hopefully, the implicit approval of the person referred to above, I believe that I wouldn't receive much difficulty if I were to move the person's userpage to reflect the promotion that they so clearly deserve, and, frankly, damn the torpedoes if I do. Badbilltucker 15:50, 26 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Again, eh? edit

Unbelievable. Wikibooks is still open to you guys... maybe just leave it as a redirect and move? Wikiversity is a fun place too, by the way. Perhaps you could have different subpages for monitoring wikistrees on all of the en projects. As I said before, inter-project relations could use some help (even campy help!) --SB_Johnny|talk|books 17:39, 30 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Well wishes for recovery edit

Recovering from surgery? Eek! I hope you are healing well! -- Natalya 15:48, 1 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for sticking through all the discussions too; it was always nice to see that when things were getting heated you would come in with some rational thought and speak the truth and calm things down. Hope you had a great holiday too! And thanks for all the good Esperanza times, while things were still going well it was nice. -- Natalya 17:14, 1 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

I've been thinking about ya. Back to yourself now? --SB_Johnny|talk|books 22:42, 16 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Well, no pressure on the wikibooks thing from me :-). I'm actually spending most of my time on commons and wikiversity these days as wikibooks has been more a chore than a pleasure of late.
