User:Smirkingman/sandbox edit

Hi. I've deleted your sandbox for you. Just a note that in future you can used WP:CSD#U1 as a criteria to get rid of stuff in your own userspace, rather than G7. Pedro :  Chat  15:16, 5 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi Pedro, thank you for helping, a bit of steep learning curve for me. Smirkingman (talk) 16:50, 5 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

If it's not in your user space (i.e., it doesn't start with User:Smirkingman/) then use G7, such as for Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Thomas Minder. Happy editing! ~ Amory (utc) 17:08, 5 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the G7 hint! Does my replying like this notify you (Amorymeltzer)? I haven't fully understood the WP mechanics yet. Smirkingman (talk) 19:49, 5 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Not directly, not like when I post here. If you post on my talk I will see a notification. However, I have this page watchlisted, which means that I'll see the new edits if I go to my watchlist. ~ Amory (utc) 20:39, 5 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Ah, another learning gem, enjoyable, thanks! Smirkingman (talk) 20:42, 5 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Article title formatting edit

Just to let you know, regardless of the actual name of the referendum, all referendum articles have to be titled in the format "Demonym subject referendum, year" - e.g. Swiss unfair competition referendum, 1944.

The second issue is that (as I noted on the AfD discussion page) we also use WP:COMMONNAME for deciding article titles, and whilst "agsinst rip-off salaries" is the official name, most media outlets are referring to it as a referendum on executive pay. Thanks for the heads-up. I see your points, but Minder has an MBA from an American university, he's thus well-qualified to choose an accurate title in English for his own initiative. The fact that a gaggle of journalists have made liberal translations of the title doesn't make them authoritative. Smirkingman (talk) 21:41, 7 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
No problem. You may be right about Minder, but that doesn't invalidate the common name policy. Number 57 21:43, 7 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
I haven't grasped the objection to Minder's title (à la "Swiss against rip-off salaries initiative 2013", albeit clumsy) in WP:COMMONNAME; probably due to my lack of experience. Rather than flogging the horse to death, I suggest we await consensus from the AfD and my proposed rename, which if I understand correctly should happen within 7 days. FYI, Minder is also renowned as very uncompromising; if his assistant's request for renaming is passed over, I very much doubt that he'll let it pass; could be interesting. Smirkingman (talk) 22:06, 7 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
Fortunately Minder has no say whatsoever as to what happens on Wikipedia, and any effort to influence the process (which will no doubt be classed as WP:COI) would only serve to antagonise editors against any proposed change. I suspect the AfD will result in a keep vote, but it won't have any impact on the renaming (a separate discussion on the article's talk page in the form of a requested move would be needed if you're still unhappy with the current title). Minder, you and I have exactly the same say in reaching consensus on WP, as you well know. Let's wait for that consensus :) Smirkingman (talk) 22:32, 7 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
