Artist Curator Paul Murnaghan

Thanks for your comments Sionk, as you can see I'm new to this. One of the main reasons that I put this artist's work up is that much of what he does is ethereal and happens outside the gallery / institution. It is hard to find references. I am a little confused about the robustness of links, I felt that linking to museums or galleries that I could find would be a solid reference. The internal Wiki links were just for added info for the reader and to support referenced writers credentials, should I remove these? I have listed the publications that I know of in their correct form (I hope), they are verifiable but I find magazine articles that I have read may not be on line. You mentioned independent articles, The Frieze article about a show that he curated (you may need to scroll down on the page) is readable on line and they are highly respected as you will know. Circa magazine has often written of his work but they require that you download a PDF and pay for it (hard times in arts in Ireland)but back issues can be cited, should I do this for other articles even if they cannot be read on line? After this last attempt I am at a bit of a loss for what to do, any suggestions?

Thanks again for your comments, I think that I have cited my online sources correctly and magazine/books references. In reference to your comment I wouldn't describe galleries as neutral (or entirely reliable) sources because they often have a vested interest in promoting the artist (their product) The gallery catalogue and critic that I referenced most is from a State Gallery with text from an independent critic (who's credibility is their bread and butter), there was no work for sale or there are no gallery artists at this space (the lab)and really no vested interest, that is why I chose it. As far as I know this artist does not belong to any gallery and does not have product for sale, the work is mostly processed based, conceptual and often of and ethereal nature which tends to negate product. I totally understand your concerns but I must say it is hard to find much information on this artist in books written outside of an arts context and therefore they are often associated in some way with an institution. I presume the Frieze and Circa refs are ok? You mentioned in a previous comment not to reference inside Wikipedia, I see this done all the time in other articles, I am curious as to why you want me to avoid this practice as surely this information is valid. I am anxious to know if I am coming close to clearing this text (please specify problems if I am not). The Farm Group

Hi there, I don't see why you have rejected the article for The Farm Group. There are hundreds of company articles on Wikipedia (such as the few listed below) which have nowhere near as much evidence to support their facts, as I have provided. Broadcast Magazine is a well known and respected provider of industry news and well adheres to Wikipedia's 'notability' requirements for companies requirements as an independant source of evidence. Also, I havent' just used Broadcast Magazine, I have also used Televisual Magazine (another widely recognised publication) as well as other sources for evidence. Tom Tattoo, article not accepted, some reflections

Hi, I saw that the article about Tom Tattoo, Italian born tattoo artist, haas been not accepted. I just would like to say that there are some reasons for keeping this article on the Wiki's English version. Tom has started his tattoo artist career in the States, first in Seattle and then in New York where he got to work with artists such as Chris Garver and Sean Vasquez among others. He lives in Italy but every years he's twice in the States and partecipate to the NYCity Tattoo Convention since the first year. He's well know on the American scene (I've seen some others wikipedians have added articles from local magazines) and he has good professional and personal relationships with all the most important artists in the States and around the world. This is witnessed by two important awards: in 2007 the magazine Tattoo, issued a Special Edition for the Twentieth Anniversary and Tom Tattoo was one of the mentioned artists. In the same year, at the NYCtattoo Convention, Tom has received an award from the judges of the contests and the organization for The contributions to the art of tattooing. This means, to me, that Tom has gone through a long career with success, recognized not only in Italy and so he deserves a mention in the international Wiki version. Do you think it would help to quote the international publications or the Italian publications of international interest? Please, I'll work again on the article and I wish to have suggestion in order to write a right article. Lulubelle III

Hi Sionk. I'm looking for some advice on the rejection of Lulubelle III page. It looks like notability is the reason for refusal. The band have a BBC artist page http://www.bbc.co.uk/music/artists/58572196-2792-4c66-a7f8-985753bc5d17 because they have been played twice this month on BBC national radio and once on BBC regional radio. Previous to this they have had airplay on BBC regional radio and Irish national radio. The BBC artists help pages suggest that being played on radio counts as notability. There are links in the article to all of this so I thought I had met the verifiability criteria. Any help in what I need to meet the criteria would be much appreciated. Thanks. I am a little perplexed as to why this time my submission has been rejected (the other times I can absolutely see the reviewers point of view).

For clarification - (and it may be a lack of knowledge about Australian Unions and their structures perhaps) but The Services Union is one of the two Queensland Branches of the Australian Services Union- which is the National Office. This was made distict in my introduction. However, I am happy to clarify this further in the introduction for further review.

As for reliable sources - The Australian Trade Union Archives are the MAIN SOURCE of information about trade unions in Australia and the main source where people go in regards to finding out about Australian Trade Unions and their history. If you look at the website: http://www.atua.org.au/about.html and read this passage on the ABOUT PAGE: Importance of ATUA

"Prior to ATUA, there was no single access point from which scholars of Australian labour history could discover which trade unions existed in Australia since the advent of organised labour in the nineteenth century. In short, there was no comprehensive listing by union name.

Additionally, there was no matching historical context about the emergence, existence and industry focus of individual unions. Over time, unions have amalgamated, expanded, changed names or even ceased to exist as the industrial, legislative, political, technological and economic environments in which they operated changed. These changes are reflected in ATUA.

Lastly, there has been no central, accessible point from which scholars could view existing knowledge regarding trade union and industrial bodies. There was no one resource detailing the location, quantity, contents and access conditions of archives created by unions since their formation over one hundred years ago."

You will see that this is the primary source to get historical information about Australian TUs.

I have used reliable sources such as newspapers as well. I find it hard to understand (perhaps you could clarify) why a page like this about Australian Fashion Designer Alex Perry http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alex_Perry with hardly any references is approved (and with Wikipaedia calling for people to refernce this page) and my page about The Services Union is not. Could you please explain this to me so I have a better understanding of why this is?

Could you please review my submission again now with:

a) my further clarification regarding the fact The Services Union is a Queensland branch of The Australian Services Union- I have edited the introduction to reflect this b) That you have further understanding of the importance of the ATUA is regards to Australian Trade Union history and as one of the only sources we have in regards to this. Plus you have further reviewed my refernces to newspapers.

The Florence Art Studio

I wrote an article on The Florence Art Studio, a studio school in Florence, Italy which was rejected. It is my first wikipedia article, so maybe I just didn't know what I was doing. What exactly was wrong with it? I modeled it after a page on Charles H. Cecil Studios, which was approved, so i am confused about the rejection. What needs to be cited more clearly?

Janet Devlin

Hi, I disagree with why you rejected my article on Janet Devlin. I believe that I have provided enough information on her recent events, details of her debut album campaign and her own UK and Ireland Headline Tour to prove that she is no longer just an "X Factor" contestant but an artist in her own right and so should have her own stand-alone page. Other X Factor artists who have achieved far less have their own pages (example - Daniel DeBourg) so why not Janet Devlin? Is it simply because of her recent X Factor connection? Also to state "her debut album is optimistically promised for Spring 2013" is a personal opinion, not a valid reason to reject. So even when she releases the album it isn't guaranteed that the page will be accepted for creation? If that is the case then several other former X Factor contestants should probably have their pages deleted. Thanks for the feedback regarding the sources and I will look into them and edit as appropriate. I don't believe a lot of the article post X Factor is from twitter/facebook sources but do acknowledge there are a couple that I need to look at. AfC/Swamp Meadow Bridge

However, I did not intend for it to be an article about the bridge itself (though I do intend to write one). MIMS Ireland

Hi I added two independent references from the Irish regulatory body mentioning that they publish their safety updates regularly in MIMS Ireland. It's number 7 and 8. Would that be enough? I hope because it's very hard to find references for this type of publication, and I can see why the Irish Medical Times and MIMS UK have none either! Also do I need to submit it again for someone to check? I can't find the link, it looks like it disappeared. Blue Waters Antigua

Hi Sionk,

I have since changed the article and removed all material that could be considered commercial.

I would also like to clarify that I don't work for the hotel, I visited it on holiday and after hearing about its history from the staff there thought it worthy of an article, not only due to the historical connection to Osmond Kelsick but also as it is a historical property in the Caribbean and thus is somewhat of an institution in the region.

I hope you will have the time to re-view the article and hopefully consider it worthy of inclusion.

Bratislava Jazz Days

However, I'm quite unhappy about declining it 2nd time. If you look at the list of jazz festivals on wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_jazz_festivals

and compare my article with most of them you will find that BJD is by far one of the best covered article. With more references than most of the festivals. I will try to find more English language references (esp. news), but understand that Czechoslovakia was a communist country and until the 1990's there was hardly any coverage at all as the communist party did not like to promote it at all.

If I don't find any articles i will just give it up.

Article Rejection? Why not give some real reasons, not opinion.

Regarding Ray Butts page submission... I am very disappoint in this result of a review. First of all your comment about a "chatty manner" is simply snobby comment. My first guess is from an English major. That is an opinion, first off. Something the editor of a concise publication might say. Wikipedia is NOT that. Have you read a large percentage of this sites articles? I'm sure you would reject most of them on that basis. Some of the text was MOVED from other articles about this subject, trying to consolidate. I based the whole style of the text on similar subjects. If you want something more succinct, say it. Your comment was derogatory and unprofessional.

The whole part about it being half finished. I thought the whole point of wikipedia is to let people collaborate, the open section are just that, leaders into. I can simply remove them and resubmit on that basis, because I know that it is still enough to qualify on historic accuracy and significance. It could take me personally years to compile it all with my schedule and busyness. It took me a year for that.

I was considering donating money, but am seriously reconsidering it now. If this is what I will be supporting. I will remove the extra sections if it such a big deal. • It doesn't take that much time to write a short but decent biographical article. If you browse around, you'll find plenty of them. You can contact Wikipedia, if you like, but the Foundation does not interfere with editorial matters, which is what this was. Sionk was correct in their assessment, and if you have a real interest in getting the article up and running, you'd take their advice and try to work with them, instead of making blanket accusations. Thanks for volunteering to take a look at this. I accept your view but I do want to make one small point of appeal: you mention that CORPDEPTH calls for mention in books and newspapers. One of my citations shows that the subject was featured in a Wall Street Journal article about new forms of financing springing up in the wake of the financial crash (see citation no.9).

Hi Sionk,

I think you'll like my changes to the article on Tim Rebowe. I'm new to wikipedia and don't know how to reference inside an article. Please help me improve it, not delete it. All the information in the article was gathered from the links in the reference section. This coach is an assistant coach and was a head coach at the highest level of college football, Division I. He was also head coach at the highest level of high school football in Louisiana. I did a quick 5 minute search on people who were already on wikipedia but just assistant coaches at lower levels of college football than Rebowe(non-Divison I) and found the following: Craig Stump–Texas State, Chad Glasgow–Texas State, Don Shows–Northwestern Louisiana, Mike Nesbitt-McNeese St, Ronnie Thompson-Lamar. If they can be included then please allow Tim Rebowe to stay on wikipedia. I feel he can be considered at the pinnacle of his profession as a college coach b/c he was also a head coach. Not everyone coaches in NFL. Many well-known and very well-respected football coaches stay at the college or even high school level. As an assistant college coach, your responsibilities include helping to win games, improve offense/defense/special teams, develop players for the NFL and recruiting players to your university. The articles and references show he won games, improved defense/special teams, put many players in NFL and is a top recruiter. Lastly, this helps expand the articles of 3 college football teams in wikipedia. More information on a topic the better, as long as it can be verified, correct? I know I'm not great at writing articles in Wikipedia, but I do know what a successful well-known assistant coach looks like. • From the usual practice on Wikipedia I believe that if topic A is deleted in an AFD, but new sources are found or used that were not discussed or not used, then one can write a new article and it wouldn't count as G4 because the sources make it "new" and invalidate the old AFD, meaning that the nominator will have to make another AFD now accounting for the new sources. While I could make a DRV about the specific topic, it may be good to bring up this general principle in a separate discussion (maybe at Wikipedia talk:Criteria for speedy deletion) WhisperToMe (talk) 05:36, 7 December 2012 (UTC)

Man-Who Effect

Sionk,

Thank you for taking the time to review my article on the "Man-Who Effect". Your reason for declining this submission were because you could not find proper support for the commonality of the term "man who effect", and that most sources refer to this effect as the "confirmation bias". While might be true for the ones you have read, I believe that it misconstrues what my article was trying to present.

I am not simply attempting to rename the confirmation bias into an irrelevant name. Rather, I am trying to describe one particular phenomenon leading to erroneous judgments or decisions, which involves certain aspects of the confirmation bias. The aspect of distinction between the Man-Who Effect and the confirmation bias, is that for an individual to exhibit the Man Who Effect, they must also be incorporating aspects of other major biases and heuristics, such as the availability bias. The combinations of biases are potent and should not be overlooked, and the outcomes of these combinations are far too complicated to be simply referred to as the confirmation bias in legitimate primary literature. For example, the availability bias often contributes to the confirmation bias in hypothesis testing, because confirmatory information is more available in an individuals mind (which can be due to selective research, memory, recall, etc) as we as humans almost always give preference to information in line with our opinions/beliefs/hypotheses. Yet the the confirmation bias does not cause the availability bias (and vice versa), as they are two separate psychological phenomenon, though very difficult to distinguish where one begins and the other ends. In this way it is impossible to know exactly what combination of biases and heuristics creates the Man-Who Effect, especially as it can vary depending on the specific case at hand.

Additionally, the term "Man-Who Effect" is based off the common contemporary statement "I know a man who...", which then leads to the error via the reasons above and many more.

I'm sure there are other problems with my article that need addressing, but if I were to the above statements clear in my submission, would that sate your issue? Again, I appreciate the feedback, and any more feedback you or others have. I by no means consider my knowledge of this field of psychology succinct enough to be taken for certain.

Regarding your suggestion to simply add BiMBA to Peking /University

First I would like to thank you for reviewing my article, however I cannot accept your suggest to simply add BiMBA to Peking University. Like I've explained to the reviewer before you, and the one before him, BiMBA is not a part of Peking University, and BiMBA is not under the direct control of Peking University. Thus, it would make no sense for it to be simply a paragraph inside Peking University. If only there were a special note section for the reviewers to read, I would not have to reexplain the situation every time it gets rejected because the reviewer saw it better fit to be inside Peking University. Nevertheless, I am willing to work with you to get this article up to your standards for approval. I see that citation is an issue for you, however I have included several references to outside independent sources, how many sources do you need exactly? I have seen many similar articles with much less references, yet they were approved. What exactly is the standard for approval? Hello, I'm not sure whether or not you've seen my reply to you on my talk page, but after I've written you a reply, I thought to myself how can I better explain the relationship between Peking University and BiMBA, and I think essentially the relationship is similar to the relationship between Harvard University and Harvard Business School. Although they are in some ways related, they are essentially completely independent entities, with different boards and admissions and so on. You would not request for HBS to be included as a stub to Harvard University right? I guess this is the best way to explain the reason behind wanting to establish a separate article for BiMBA. Further, the relationship is even more complicated for BiMBA and PKU because, PKU already has a school of management, that is directly owned by PKU, and receive their MBA degree from PKU, and is under control of ministry of education. However, BiMBA is sort of a joint-educational venture between NSD and its global partners, so the graduates of receive their MBAs from Vlerick, hence the i in BiMBA. I hope I am not complicating things too much for you, I know the relationship is complicated, which is why I didn't want to include it as a paragraph in the BiMBA. Perhaps I will add the relationship later, but for now, the most important thing is to actually create an article on BiMBA before expanding it further so it will eventually be the size of say HBS or other business schools. Thank you for your time, I hope you will work with me to publish this article.

p.s. I have reworded the intro so perhaps it will be a bit easier to tell the relationship. The way it's worded is similar to the way Harvard Business School is worded, so I think it should be up to the standards. Rejection of Sir William Hawkslow Middlemore article.

Hello Sionk, I just wanted to add a response to this. While some of what you said maybe valid concerning his birth and death dates, I find what you said " William seems to be known only for collecting speeding tickets and marrying a typist." to be unfair - he was known for motoring offences including a fine and a crash which was reported in countries around the world, and was known for marrying Violet Constance Kennagh, who happened to be a typist, which was reported as far away as Australia. So in a neutral perspective he was notable for at least two aspects of his life. If someone was writing a study on motoring offences or notable weddings they may appreciate these facts that might not appeal to millions of others but are still things that happened, notable wordwide. Need to clarification on the rejection of the FEAPO article

Many of our member organizations have FEAPO articles so I wonder why they are allowed and we are not.

Ah yes, it it a double-edged sword, you add links to your article (which is a good thing) and it integrates it into Wikipedia, but at the same time more people found out about it and they are not always so favourable. Rejection of article VITESS because of references

thank you for taking the time to review articles! I've got a question concerning the rejection of the article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:KashmirVanBlum/VITESS about the software package VITESS because "This submission's references do not adequately evidence the subject's notability": could you please specify which condition for notability is not fulfilled? In my opinion, significant coverage is given since a description of the software package as well as its performance compared to other software as well as real experiments are covered. The sources include articles in scientific journals (having passed a review process) as well as a talk at an international conference, which to me seems as reliable as it gets, and are independent per se in case of the journals and indepent in case of the talk because the speaker has nothing to do with the software package development (which by the way is also true for the authors of one cited article). On December 5 you declined the submission of Robert Gibbons' page to Wikipedia.

As his current publisher, I created & submitted the page.

Reason given for rejection was that he, or his work of 40 years were not deemed notable.

We do hope that you thoroughly examined each entry, realizing that his books have been consistently reviewed by one on the most important, long-standing journals in America, Evergreen Review, founded & edited by Robert's late friend & mentor, Barney Rosset.

That two of the most important critics in the country, Marjorie Perloff, & the late Guy Davenport, both compared his work favorably to Rimbaud's.

That William Heyen has referred to him, after reading the book This Time, as "one of the great writers of our time."

That Ben Bollig of Oxford University posted: "...he is the most passionate advocate of poetry I have met."

That the current Archivist of the United States, & former Director of the New York Public Library, [[David Ferriero]], wrote of This Time, "This is a book to be read slowly, carefully. A journey, creating for the reader a sense of Timelessness - permission to undertake personal exploration and reflection. One completes that journey a better observer and with a deeper appreciation of the world with Gibbons as the guide."

I am in the process of publishing Gibbons' book on Charles Olson & Clyfford Still, dedicated to his friend & former colleague at the National Gallery of Art, David Anfam, now Commissioning Editor at Phaidon in London, who wrote the Catalogue Raisonné of Mark Rothko.

David unrolled the long-hidden Still paintings archived in a Maryland warehouse prior to construction of the Clyfford Still Museum in Denver, where he then curated the inaugural exhibit.

I do not have time to hash things out in order to convince anyone of the notability of Gibbons' work.

Please reconsider the status of this submission.

Rejection Statement: Other editors have struggled to put their finger on what is wrong with this article. I would suggest large parts fall into Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not. Wikipedia isn't an instruction manual. It's okay to decribe what a Charbroiler is, what it does and how it is used, but detailed (largely unsourced) maintainance instructions seem unnecessary. I would suggest the article is kept succinct, to avoid the implication that this is largely original research. I have compared it to the artist article page of Max Cooper electronica musician and i came to the conclusion that this artist seems to be less notable than Applescal. Max Cooper has not made a single artist album. Whilst Applescal has made 3 of them being reviewed by the biggest music blogs out there like Pitchfork Media.

I have added a link to an album review on Pitchfork, a reference to Max Cooper and several notable external links to articles on the greater music blogs this world has to offer.

Thank you for taking the time to review my submission for an article on Catherine Hunter. I accept all your points about the style and content of the piece, which I have now substantially revised as suggested. I also accept that as submitted, I didn’t make the case for Hunter’s notability. I omitted a number of references to her work simply because they were in praise of it and I didn’t want it to read like a hagiography. These include independent, verifiable secondary sources, among them Australia’s leading newspapers and broadcaster. I’m still unclear how (or whether) to incorporate them, but I include some references below for your background. Hunter’s role is also highlighted in several books by and about Australian artists, but these aren’t on line. For example, she is described in Australian actor Max Cullen’s memoirs thus: “Catherine’s art stories had helped make Sunday the most sophisticated current affairs programme on TV” (Tell ‘Em Nothing, Take ‘Em Nowhere, Pan Macmillan, 2010 p.221).

I have gone though and fixed my references as well as tried to prove that the subject is notable enough to have an article on the site. Particularly to #10 and #12 of Wikipedia:Notability. I have submitted the article for Chris P. James twice now and it has been rejected twice on the basis of unverifiable references. All the references, which were updated and added to, are indeed verifiable, causing me to wonder if you actually took the time to check any of them. Wikipedia, which at one time was a great place to share information on people, places, events and things, has apparently become controlled by gatekeepers. Although I'm not at all sure what gives you the authority to reject a submission, since you are not a musician and apparently have no knowledge of musicians, I would like to encourage you to actually take a moment to check the sources I provided for the article before you reject it. Not understanding lack of notability and need for more/better references

Best wishes to you too. Unfortunately we're looking for significant coverage about "A House, A Home". Apart from source 2, the coverage seems to be about the choir and/or the music. Thanks for the reply. I will work at sourcing additional editorial reviews that are specific to the film. I understand, the central theme of the reviews needs to be "about" the film rather than the band or song that influenced the creation of the film. Thanks again for getting back to me. I see that you looked into the copyvio concerns associated with Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Tom Tattoo. My guess is that the bot picked up on a list if the fathers of tattoo art: dennis cockell horiyoshi iii don ed hardy leo zulueta bill salmon petelo suluape gippi rondinella. While it could probably be handled better, I decided it was OK, although I suppose one could argue the list is creative. It was referenced. I originally thought it was fine, I'm now having second thoughts, although it isn't clear the article will survive for other reasons.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 22:15, 27 December 2012 (UTC)
