Please stop mass changing short descriptions on byzantine related pages without consensus. Ratnahastin (talk) 03:49, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
- Most of my changes have just been changing the mind you basically derogatory term of "Byzantine emperor/Byzantine empire" to "Eastern Roman Emperor/Eastern Roman Empire". All of my changes make sense and the consensus's have already been going on for years. The term "Byzantine" was made in the 16th century to make the Eastern Romans seem not Roman. However the Eastern Romans were Roman. So instead of going all the way to the extremes "Eastern Roman" is the correct term because it shows how they were Roman, and it shows how they were still different. - @ByzantineHistory435 The term "consensus" as used on Wikipedia refers to community WP:CONSENSUS. I am not opposed on principle to the changes you are advocating for. But you don't get to make those kinds of fairly dramatic changes unilaterally. While I agree that the term "Byzantine" is ahistorical, it is nonetheless the WP:COMMONNAME used in the modern English-speaking world when referring to the Empire and its culture. If you want to make an argument to change how we reference it, you will need to open a discussion and request community input. I would suggest Talk:Byzantine Empire, where I see someone has recently raised the issue. -Ad Orientem (talk) 16:19, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
- Respectfully, that talk page (and those related) constitutes a brick wall for the East Roman-Byzantine issue. Every so often someone wants to change it and it gets shut down by COMMONNAME after often drawn-out arguments. Unless the academic viewpoint does a complete 180 on the last 300 years of scholarship, that is unlikely to change. Currently, the status quo is to keep whatever the article already says, with the general rule that post-West Roman Empire collapse often uses Byzantine and pre-collapse uses East Roman. - @ByzantineHistory435 If you would rather not edit here, you are free to just move on. We only block people to prevent disruption of the project, and then only when lesser measures have either failed, or as a matter of common sense the editor is not here to build an encyclopedia. That said, I hope you will stay as you obviously have an interest in a subject area where we are not exactly drowning in contributors. Sadly Basil II doesn't get the same traffic as RMS Titanic. - Yes, editors can be banned and, indeed, IP addresses can be blocked if edits are disruptive. You have obviously not worked out how Wikipedia functions. Wikipedia functions by representing relevant scholarship faithfully. Wikipedia does not and cannot create precedents for scholarship to follow, it works entirely the other way around. Being 'right' about a subject in your own eyes does not matter a jot or tittle. Scholarship universally recognises a hiatus, usually placed somewhere between 600AD and 700AD where what is previously called the Eastern Roman Empire becomes the Byzantine Empire. Considering the momentous changes to politics, religion and society in the Mediterranean World that happened in this century it has a good deal of sense behind it. However, any arguments for a continuation of nomenclature are nugatory, because scholarship recognises a break in nomenclature in the period in question - end of. Do not edit against consensus or make mass changes to article descriptions without explanation or seeking consensus.Dozens of recent edits have been, or will be reverted as they were made in a manner that is disruptive.
