Hi @Julius Schwarz,

Per the information on Template:Warning:

This is the Warning message box. It should be used sparingly and only for important warnings about an article or a user that cannot be shown using a more specific template. Please only use it when something is seriously wrong and other people might not otherwise know about it. Less important comments should be put as regular text on the page's talk page instead.

I appreciate that you want to inform readers of changes to MEPs, but I don't think that the processes that come with routine elections meet these criteria.

(Sorry if this comes across as condescending; it's really hard to convey tone over text)

Thank you, Loytra (talk) 17:42, 10 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Loytra,
Not condescending at all, it's ok. I had seen your last revert and, as per your message, was going to open this discussion but got held up at home.
Indeed, I had seen the information you quoted and pondered whether this was the best tool. My reason for opting for that is that, specifically, in the case of European elections this is note quite routine. Usually, after an elections, it's rather straightforward to update the number of MPs (for instance) of a party.
Here, given the structure of European party membership and the official registration of national parties as member parties, the official number of MEPs members of a European party is ascertained and published by the APPF. Following previous discussions on the update of these figures (where well-intentioned users published the wrong data, also confusing European parties and groups in the European Parliament), it was proposed to stick to official figures, even if that includes a delay following the European elections
However, given many people's eagerness to update data, I felt a banner would be useful. Maybe there are other ways to indicate this, but I really feel like a banner is warranted in this case. Case in point, data was already updated for Volt -- although in this case, the banner was not displayed, as Volt is not officially a European party and, therefore, its number of member MEPs is not published by the APPF. My opinion is that the banner prevents similar (and, in my opinion, unwanted) eagerness for official European political parties.
As always, I remain open to discuss this and, if possible, to find a better way, but I do feel this is useful and actually serving its purpose. Of course, I also hope the APPF swiftly moves to publish updated figures, but this may take some weeks.
