Clericalizing the laity

edit

Regarding certain pastoral debates surrounding this document, the article should consider mentioning the ecclesiastical point of view that attributing greater roles to the laypeople amounts to clericalizing them. In a speech to a group of Brazilian bishops who were making their ad limina visits, Pope Benedict XVI spoke about the distinct roles played by the clergy and the laity, stressing that "it is important to avoid the secularization of clergy and the clericalization of the laity".
