Copy vs. cut edit

Could someone change this to "copy'n'paste" just so it doesn't cause anyone to delete the whole page they're editing? Mark Hurd 12:12, 23 Jun 2004 (UTC)

If the database is in read only mode, they won't be able to save (ie blank the page). Dysprosia 14:34, 23 Jun 2004 (UTC)
I noticed this message on WikiBooks during what seemed to be just a small glitch: I couldn't save and then I could. But as I implied in my summary, it's just a pedantic thing. Mark Hurd 17:19, 23 Jun 2004 (UTC)

I've changed it from cut-n-paste to copy-and-paste. - Mark 07:29, 5 May 2005 (UTC)Reply

More eyecatching edit

As it stands, this message is tame compared to the notice it deserves when it appears. Maybe it could be changed to

WARNING: The database has been locked for maintenance, so you will not be able to save your edits right now. You may wish to copy-and-paste the text into a text file and save it for later.

Yeah, I know it's hideous, but that's the point. —EncMstr 07:44, 31 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

I feel that your suggestion is a good one because this is a major situation. --Siva1979Talk to me 18:09, 31 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
Great composition! The things you find on obscure interface pages..! Feezo (send a signal | watch the sky) 11:14, 27 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Well, personally, this message does not create a shock effect on users. We have to bear in mind that some users who did a lot of editing and are about to save the page, would tend to disregard the simpler message. The consequences of this is clear. Their edits would not be saved and this would lead to frustration and waste of time. This is a very, very serious and major occurance. If the database is locked, a message befitting the situation would be most appropriate here. --Siva1979Talk to me 03:48, 10 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Add link to webchat edit

Instead of using [irc://irc.freenode.net/wikipedia #wikipedia], please change it to {{irc|wikipedia}} (shows up as #wikipedia connect, which provides a link to freenode's webchat. Legoktm (talk) 06:13, 4 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

I like the basic idea, but the "connect" text breaks the flow of the sentence somewhat - how about adding a connect link to the end of the notice instead? — Mr. Stradivarius (have a chat) 10:26, 4 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, that's a good point. I think your suggestion would work as well. Legoktm (talk) 04:59, 5 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
Please state the exact change to be made. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 17:32, 5 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
How about adding the following sentence: "If you do not have an IRC client, you can connect using webchat." Legoktm (talk) 17:45, 5 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

We apologize for any inconvenience this might have caused. edit

I intend to change

We apologize for any inconvenience this might have caused.

to

We apologize for the inconvenience.

since seeing the read-only lock message I think always means some inconvenience. The new phrasing would help trim the lengthy read-only message too. Jason Quinn (talk) 16:20, 30 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Reason for readonly(ro) edit

Hey, with this override for the translatewiki default message, we're not including the parameter $1 that the default message has. That parameter offers a reason for the ro-mode given by sysadmins when setting the wiki to ro. We try to move things away from having a generic "is in maintenance" sentence in that parameter and instead include helpful information for the current reason of the ro-mode. For example we are include a link to meta:codfw when running the switch today. Please clarify if it is on purpose to leave that parameter out of if you'd like to add a statement like "The system administrators offered the following reason: $1" or something like that. People who try to edit would than directly see a link to a page with explanations of this current maintenance - without adding extra work for enwiki sysops, as they don't need to change that information here. I understand that a few wikis oppose to including that parameter, mainly because it is not translated and will always be shown in English - but that's not a matter on enwp I guess ;) Thanks EddieGP (talk) 11:43, 3 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
