Helmut Hofer is a German businessman.[1] He was arrested in Tehran in charge of "having an affair with an Iranian girl" by Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on 1998 and was sentenced to death.[2]

Arrest, sentenced and released edit

On 1998, Hofer was arrested in Tehran in charge of "having an affair with an Iranian girl" and sex outside marriage between woman Muslim (Vahideh Qassemi, 26-year-old doctor[3]) woman and a non-Muslim man by Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and was sentenced to death Islamic Revolutionary Court and moved to the Evin Prison.[4][5]

After 18 months his death sentence was rejected in the Supreme Court of Iran.[6][7] The IRNA news agency (Iranian government news agency) confirmed Hofer released on a bail of 500 million Iranian toman (105,000 pounds).[8][9] A few weeks after he was re-arrested on charges of "espionage".[10][11][12]

Reactions edit

Bodo Hombach, the chief of staff of Gerhard Schroder said: "Hofer will not be going to Germany with us because we respect the laws of Iran. He is in in good physical and mental health."[9]

Saeed Nobari, the Judicial system of the Islamic Republic of Iran spokesman said: "Hofer was re-arrested because of connections with some foreign suspicious elements and fear of escaping from Iran,'' [13][14]

German authorities believe that Hofer arrest is to blackmail the Iranian government or exchange prisoners with Europe.[15][16]
