edit

Add new parameter "template" boolean so that when also used multiple it says "This template documentation contains multiple lists" rather than "This article", so I can use this template in a template documentation.

For the love of god at least change the word "article" to "page". Sdkb Uni3993 (talk) 04:49, 12 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
  Done See Template:Dynamic list/testcases for examples. – Jonesey95 (talk) 06:08, 12 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Jonesey95 @Uni3993, what is an example of a time that a template would have multiple lists? The idea of a list is really a concept for articles, so I don't think it's a good idea to expand the functionality beyond that, as it's not what this template is designed for. (Also, if we were to implement, we'd want to use {{SUBJECTSPACE formatted}} rather than a parameter.) {{u|Sdkb}}talk 16:30, 12 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Sdkb Template:Fallacies Think about the documentation for this template, it contains multiple dynamic lists of fallacies propositional, quantificational, equivocation etc. These fallacies are in no way complete, they are only well-know ones, therefore they are dynamic lists. Uni3993 (talk) 16:56, 12 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
That's not really a fit. Note that this template says items should be added "with reliable sources," which is not something we do for navbox entries. I'm going to undo the change for now. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 17:05, 12 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
I was just implementing a good-faith request that looked harmless. I have no opinion on whether the change should be kept. One note: in the template documentation cases, the text should read "template" in order to make sense, not "template documentation" as originally requested. – Jonesey95 (talk) 17:24, 12 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Sdkb Ok then how about for the template version, we remove the reliable sources part OR instead of the word article we could use the word page and there would be then no need for a seperate template version Uni3993 (talk) 18:23, 12 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
The fundamental point is that navboxes are not dynamic lists, because a dynamic list is a type of article. Navboxes are navboxes, with a totally different context. Trying to get this template to handle both would stretch it way beyond its intended purpose, resulting in problems both now and in the future that we don't want to have to deal with. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 18:30, 12 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
Then I will create a new dynamic list template for navboxes. Uni3993 (talk) 19:38, 12 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

The word "Dynamic list" is a section link to Wikipedia:WikiProject Lists#Incomplete lists. It's probably supposed to link to #Dynamic lists. Snowmanonahoe (talk) 20:44, 19 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Not done. Are you sure you're posting on the right talk page? This is the talk page for Template:Dynamic list, and edit requests here should be a request to change template code. –Novem Linguae (talk) 08:56, 13 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
