Gangs are at a premium in Englewood and gang turf is constantly fought over between the Gangster Disciples, Black P stones, and Black Disciples. Englewoods crime and murder rate surpass almost every other neighborhood in Chicago. Larry Hoover who is currently surving a lifetime sentence in prison started the Gangster Disciples in Englewood(63rd and Halstedt) which has become one of the largest and most dangerous gangs nation wide.

Murders

With a population of 3000, and 700 murders in the last 10 years, does this mean that somewhere around 20% of the residents have been murdered in the last decade?

History

I feel that the topic of the great black migration of the 30's and 40's, and the white flight of the late 50's and 60's is an important part of this neighborhood's history and helps to explain it's current condition and what led to it.Chyrah 21:44, 30 April 2007 (UTC)Chyrah

Attempts For Change Since the 81 murders in Englewood, which took place between January and April, 1991, a small group of adults has stepped up to create a safe place for the youth in Englewood. The main goal for this center, named P.E.A.C.E. (People Educating Against Crime In Englewood), is to provide an intermediate place for kids ranging from 8 years of age to 18, focusing on preventing crime and drug abuse by occupying children's time with activities and a loving family-like atmosphere. A square meal is served each day to the children who attend (free of charge), with an emphasis on healthy eating habits. For some of the kids, this is the only full meal they will receive that day. While the PEACE center attempts to subvert crime, its facilities are lacking. With a full gym and theatre on the second level, PEACE has great potential, but the lack of community generated funds prevents the improvement efforts.

First people

The history should begin either with the first people who settled in the area, or mention prehistoric peoples who preceded them. After all, some mound builders were active in Will County before the French came around. It's silly to say that the very first people in the area were Indians contemporaneous with the first explorers. I tried to remove the obviously wrong statement that the Mascoutens were the first people here, but my removal got undone as vandalism. 76.181.192.61 (talk) 18:16, 19 January 2016 (UTC)
