References

edit

Not being a Bendigo-an (hope that's not too much like bogan?) the best I could do was turn the references section into a set of links.

This seems to be a really well presented page and it does not at all seem to be a copyvio which is unusual for this class of page (in my experience for pages for towns/cities that don't clearly show a list of sources).

Hope my (minor) contributions are helpful. If someone who has a bit better local knowledge can explicitly cite some of the sections that would be a good step in getting this article to the point of being a Featured Article Candidate. Garrie 00:13, 13 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

For reference, the term they used for residents in Bendigo when I was last there was Bendigonian --James 02:03, 8 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Twin Towns

edit

Ingolstadt, Germany is not a twin town of Bendigo [1][2]. So I removed it from the list. --Bonuama 16:41, 26 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Review "climate" article

edit

I think the "climate" article should be longer. --Pezzar 08:05, 5 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Advertising

edit

What the hell is this:

"Cody Carrara was the regions youngest vitner. His Shiraz tentatively titled Water Wheel was a bold combination of Bendigo grapes which harvested a full body taste capped with rich cherry tanins and smooth pepper and spices. Cody's 2004 vintage was awarded a 93 from Wine Spectator and has been critically accalmined by Eileen Crane. Water Wheel 2004 has shown loads of blackberry, licorice and mineral character. Full-bodied and very concentrated, with raspberry sauce and chocolate character and a long, long finish. Enjoy Cody Carrara's Bendigo's masterpiece."

I'm sure the wine is great, but this is not the forum to seek free advertising. Wampusaust 08:08, 12 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

postcodes

edit

According to whitepages, Bendigo south/east/west/north is 3550, "BENDIGO FORWARD, VIC" is 3551, "BENDIGO (P.O. BOXES)" is 3552, & "BENDIGO DC (P.O. BOXES)" is 3554. Is this the appropriate article to record the postcode 3550 ? wtf is "Bendigo Forward" ? John Vandenberg (talk) 23:20, 11 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

I've just gone ahead and added the postcode - I'm fairly confident 3550 refers to Bendigo accurately, and this is kinda useful information... Privatemusings (talk) 23:23, 11 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

3550 is a Bendigo postcode. 110.140.183.48 (talk) 09:55, 19 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Bendigo Population

edit

This part of the article is false:

"The Greater Bendigo municipality is home to around 100,000 while the city has a steadily growing urban population of about 80,000 people which places it as the third largest regional centre in Victoria after Geelong and Melbourne."

Bendigo is in fact the FOURTH largest regional centre in Victoria behind Melbourne, Geelong and Ballarat. 2006 Census data as well as the populations listed on this page show that Bendigo is behind Ballarat in both current population as well as projected population growth.

Can somebody fix this? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.254.107.126 (talk) 13:57, 3 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

It is true that Bendigo is the 3rd largest city in Victoria following Melbourne and Geelong. The current population is more than 103,000 people. It was a big deal a couple of years ago when Bendigo past the 100,000 mark. It's widely known that this is the case. Ballarat is about 10,000 people behind Bendigo. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.193.212.106 (talk) 23:25, 15 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

I think you'll find that this confusion arises from the population statistics of the local government areas. This article is not about the City of Greater Bendigo the LGA (which is a separate article), it is about the city of Bendigo itself. The City of Greater Bendigo LGA is over 4 times the area of Ballarat's municipal boundaries which accounts for the additional populations being counted from surrounding towns. --Biatch (talk) 03:03, 18 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

POPULATION!!!!!

edit

Why does this page say that in 2011, Bendigo's population was less than 92,000??? Bendigo past the 100,000 mark in 2008! In 2011, according tot he council, Bendigo has a population of over 105,000 people, I would like to know what is going on here, as it is FALSE information on the page! I for one am sick of this article saying Bendigo is the 4th most populouse city in Victoria, after Ballarat! Bendigo is the 3rd largest city in the state by population, and the LARGEST inland city in the state, fix this because your information is FALSE! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 60.240.76.154 (talk) 08:58, 3 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Settle down, DO NOT SHOUT, consider using spell-check (populouse, anybody?), try and be a nice little person and avoid that key on the top left of your keyboard(the one with !!!!!). If you come here and shout FALSE! FALSE! FALSE! FALSE! and more FALSE! it can be a bit of a turnoff. If you find a reliable reference then off you go and edit the article accordingly, as long as you are careful not to compare apples and oranges. Regards Crusoe8181 (talk) 09:10, 3 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

What sort of a hypocrite are you? You are doing the exact same thing, also I believe the word false was only used twice in this statement, so once again you are wrong. You say to change it if a reliable source is found, each time I change it, it gets changed back... Also, in response to your smart ass remark about spell check, "Populouse , anybody?" Definition of POPULOUS a : densely populated b : having a large population — Preceding unsigned comment added by 60.240.76.154 (talk) 16:30, 19 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

See City of Greater Bendigo article ... PLEASE ! :)--Biatch (talk) 08:54, 28 July 2012 (UTC) ______________________________________________________________________________________________ According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics for Bendigo - at 30 June Estimated Resident Population - Persons - Total (no.) 2009 139,241 2010 140,967 2011 142,693 2012 144,535Reply

Discussions here must be kept polite, please. So the total population at the top of the article is OK. The table of populations by year about half way through the article requires explanation. Perhaps there are Bendigo figures not Greater Bendigo. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cosmerk (talkcontribs) 03:53, 31 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Date Established ??

edit

The infobox says 1851 (which is when gold was discovered), however the article mentions that the first settlers arrived in 1840. The establishment date does not recognise these early settlers. Shouldn't it say established 1840 ??

see Post Office link which I have just amended. 1852 for Bendigo Creek (the diggings) 1854 for Sandhurst (the surveyed town). Prior to that it was open country as part of a pastoral run, as the article states. I would run with 1851 as there is a reference to a settlement there, a few months before the PO turned up. Otherwise almost every town in Victoria was settled before 1840, as pastoral runs, and a few thousand years earlier than that for which precise dates are not available. New History section 27/12/15

edit

As suggested in your tag, I’ve condensed this to a length proportionate to the rest of the article. I think the previous version ought to be kept, but moved to its own page titled ‘History of Bendigo’. For this reason, I have not incorporated any of the cites in the new, short section. Also I’m not sure how to re-position the illustrations, so I’ve left these out for now. You may feel that the new version might only support one or two images. I’m hoping I can leave that to a fellow-editor to organise. Valetude (talk) 19:18, 27 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Sport

edit

Why is there nothing about the netball here in Bendigo? Every other sport... Netball is a really popular sport in Bendigo, with 10 clubs in the BFNL ( http://www.bendigofnl.com.au/clubs ) each with at least 5 teams (up to 8 teams) and thats only in the bendigo league, then you have leagues in the surrounding areas where girls play from Bendigo. Also, the mixed competition at Major League plus many other competitions for other age groups all through the week at the Schweppes centre, BSE, and Major League. 180.150.11.114 (talk) 15:14, 19 March 2016 (UTC)MReply

Los Altos...a sister city?!

edit

I get the connection between California's Gold Rush and Victoria's, but it's slim pickings and very tenuous.

What is with the Australian obsession with linking everything up to California? 2001:8003:A973:6300:B43E:A8CA:2FCE:927E (talk) 05:12, 27 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

Finance centre?

edit

The lead claims "Bendigo is the largest finance centre in Victoria outside Melbourne" but fails to support this with citations. Per MOS:LEAD the lead should summarize what's found in the body of the article. There no mention of finance other than in the lead. While Bendigo Bank is headquartered there it's a relatively small regional bank. There's no mention of the city of Bendigo being used as a finance centre on articles such as Banking in Australia, Financial system in Australia, nor Economy of Australia. The Bendigo Stock Exchange was there but it was closed in 2012. --Marc Kupper|talk 04:31, 7 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

Not surprisingly, Bendigo Bank is headquartered in Bendigo. It promotes itself these days as Australia's other big bank, positioning itself after the Big Four. HiLo48 (talk) 10:15, 19 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
