Shashi Gupta (born 3 April 1964 in Delhi, India) is a former Indian Test and One Day International cricketer and currently a National Selector of the Indian Women's Cricket Team at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).[1] She has played a total of 13 Tests and 20 ODIs.[2] She was the chairperson of the senior Womens Selection Committee at Delhi Development Cricket Association (DDCA) from 2010-2011.[3] She was the captain of Punjab Womens Cricket Team and Vice- Captain of Indian Railways Womens Cricket team in 1985.

In 2017, Shashi was awarded the prestigious honorary life membership of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) in recognition of her contribution to Womens Cricket.[4][5]

Career

In 1982 to 1985, Gupta was selected to play for the state level team in Punjab and was the captain of the team for a year during her tenure.[6] She also played for the Indian Railways Womens Cricket team and served as Vice-Captain of the team in 1985.[7]

She was selected to play for Indian National Womens cricket team while still in college in 1984. She played for the Indian Womens Cricket team from 1985 to 1993. During her tenure she represented the country in one Womens Cricket World Cup, played 13 Test matches and 20 One Day Internationals (ODIs).[7] The Womens Cricket team stood 4th during the World Cup in 1993.[8]

She worked for the Northern Railways of India between 1990 to 2020 and retired as a Superintendent in 2020.

She started working with the Delhi Development Cricket Association (DDCA) in 2007. She was the chairperson of the senior Womens Selection Committee at DDCA from 2010 to 2011.[9] During her tenure as the chairperson, the Delhi Womens Cricket team won the Ranji Championship and was T-20 runners-up.

Gupta served as a member of the Womens working Committee at the Board of Cricket Control of India (BCCI) since 2015 and the National Selector for India Northern States at BCCI Womens Cricket Selection Committee from 2016 to January 2020.[10] The women's team selected by her and other National Selectors stood runners up in the T-20 world cup in 2020 and in ODIs in 2017.[11]

Gupta currently serves as an advisor on the Cricket Advisory Committee to the Cricket Association of Uttarakhand (CAU) in India.

  1. Scored 10th most runs by an Indian woman cricket player in Test matches.
  2. Gupta is one of the three Indian women who has managed the series double of 100 runs and 10 wickets against New Zealand in 1985.[12]
  3. In 1984 Gupta made a world record in last wicket partnership with Sharmila Chakarwarti with 78 runs in 2nd test match India vs Australia in Lucknow.[13]
  4. Received Best all-rounder award in 2nd test match India vs Australia in Lucknow in 1984.[14]
  5. In 1985 she made a world record (at the time) for taking wicket on very first ball of the match and best all-rounder award in one day match India vs New Zealand in Indore.[15]
