There are a couple fact checking issues here...

1. This is only the second year the fundraiser has led with Jimmy. Earlier it always ended with him. Switching to this last year was hugely controversial but incontrovertibly worked.
2. the green background on the appeal has been used for years. The green background on the 'banner' is new and is what is believed to have helped with contributions. Philippe Beaudette, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 16:11, 29 November 2011 (UTC)

When I looked at the 2010 Fundraising story they said that Jimbo had drawn the strongest support for years, so I assumed he had led more then once (fallacy of assumption I suppose). I referred to what you refer to as the banner as the appeal here (variety of language) which caused that confusion. Or at least I think that's what happened. ResMar 18:55, 29 November 2011 (UTC)
