Working on the Asanas Category pages

Hi to all comers. I'm very pleased that Yoga Mat has started this project group. I have felt like this was missing here since I begun, but stopped short of taking the initiative. If you intend to be a regular editor here, I'd really recommend you construct a bit of a user page for yourself if you don't already have one; this helps establish smoother working relationships and facilitates working together by indicating areas of strength and weakness. I browsed other people's for a bit to get the feel for what a page is about before beginning my own.

I'm presently working on the Asanas Category w:Category:Asanas. As it stands at the moment, it is very scrappy and has umteen repeats of templates and not much content. I put the merge tags there. As WP is not a manual, or a link repository, it can't have pages explaining how to do poses; it can describe them and cite claims made about them by reputable yogis. Wikimedia needs top quality, non-copyright images of most of the positions. There are issues with many of the few that are available. This would be infinitely preferable to linking to outside images. Many yoga sites including those to which links still exist here are highly – primarily – commercial or just not authoritative, whatever they would have you believe – so linking to them from here is just not on, and links will get repeatedly deleted and you have to accept that. Beyond this, there's not much that needs to be said about each asana, so for most of them I have been working on combining the stubs into a page with each asana forming a section. The sections then automatically generate a list in the form of the page contents, which replaces the list of yoga postures page. There is a discussion of proposals for the development of the Asana section on the Talk:list of yoga postures page. I've been seeking co-development for this proposal for a couple of months at this time, but so far in the Asanas category there has been only isolated mostly IP address activity by other than myself. I have put a brief bio up now - I am not the right person to help with Asanas as I don't do any !! - well not quite true I do THREE ("Sitting" / "Walking" and "Lying Down") but your point about commercialism is valid. My main interest is in re-orientation - making sure that religious, philosophical, cultural, health and even the sports and fitness contexts are represented proportionately and neither one dominates the scene.

Templates and Logo

Hello, I am quite eager to get started on templates (Help:Template), especially something on the lines of the ones available atWikipedia:WikiProject_Hinduism/Templates. It would be extremely useful to have a logo to use it in. May I suggest a silhouette of one of the yoga poses (example: [1])

Also, the way I see it, templates like Template:Yoga make more sense to be within this project instead of w:WikiProject Hinduism. Is there such a thing as shifting ownership of a template? -MK 14:06, 25 March 2010 (UTC)

Getting an Icon for yoga is tricky - Personally I am not keen on using a yoga pose as it infers that postures are "iconic" - practices with no physical content whatsoever can still be legitimately called Yoga. Even the canonical text on the physical aspects of Yoga , the 15th century Hatha Yoga Pradipika devotes only one of its four chapters to asana, the now popular physical "Yoga exercises", and only describes fourteen such postures, the majority being postures suitable for sitting meditation. I noticed the templates you added to Talk:Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga and have taken the liberty of adding it to the templates page. But I can't seem to get the formatting right. Also, is that the right way of doing it? --MK 08:51, 30 March 2010 (UTC)

Asanas Infobox

Below is an idea for what information should be included in an asanas infobox template. I'll make it soon, but if anyone is experienced with Templates, I would love help (save some time). Any comments/ideas?

I have updated the Tadasana page with a finalized infobox which I plan to use for all yoga asana pages.

Please have a look at the page to see how it looks in context. Some fields were blank due to Tadasana's unique nature as a pose with two names, and limited stretching/muscle use, in addition to being a fundamental pose itself; however, this will not be common for most asanas as there are many variations of a fundamental asana and most yogasanas are heavy stretches/muscle actors.

Good work - but I think the the template is too long and boring to fill up for each asana. It contains to much anatomical information. I recommend to split it into two+ templates.

• I think the main asana info should not reference any specific school.
• A second Anatomical Template should focus on the anatomy. It would be best if this could have mostly visual elements. I think that the templates should also classify the asanas by

difficulty

type of spine movement - forward bends, backward bend, twists

• I think that the project should use an visual ashtanga series temlpate. (Instead of the current asana template) But it will require finding suitable icons/font.

I agree with User:OrenBochman with everything acceptexcept:

1. separating the template into an anatomical template because all asanas require the muscular relaxation of some muscles and the contraction of others. This is integral and common to all asanas. For these reasons, if we were to separate these templates, it would be redundant since both templates would be on every asana article, anyway.
2. indicating difficulty. I am the opinion that depending on the practitioner, some asanas will be easier or harder than others. This information is misleading and unnecessary.
3. indicating spine movement. This is also unnecessary as certain asanas have a neutral spine position.Curb Chain (talk) 00:53, 25 May 2012 (UTC)

Request for input in discussion forum

Given the closely linked subjects of the various religion, mythology, and philosophy groups, it seems to me that we might benefit from having some sort of regular topical discussion forum to discuss the relevant content. I have put together the beginnings of an outline for such discussion at Wikipedia:WikiProject Religion/2011 meeting, and would very much appreciate the input of any interested editors. I am thinking that it might run over two months, the first of which would be to bring forward and discuss the current state of the content, and the second for perhaps some more focused discussion on what, if any, specific efforts might be taken in the near future. Article Titles Of Asanas

I think that the article titles should use a completely Romanized/Anglicized asana name (no diacritics) , but in the article text, IAST should be used, as it provides all the accurate pronunciation information for the asana's real name. Devanagari script should just be included in the article somewhere. Anyone else? Supaiku (talk) 21:51, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

Incorrect tags

User:MarB4 seems to have mistakenly tagged a lot of Yoga articles as GA-Class (see Category:GA-Class Yoga articles). This class should only be used for good articles. I think all these articles will need to be rated again. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 12:33, 18 May 2012 (UTC)

Proposed MOS for Religion

There is now a proposed general Manual of Style for Religion and other articles relating to ethoses or belief systems at Wikipedia:WikiProject Religion/Manual of style. Any input would be welcome. I personally believe at least one of the reasons why many articles in this field have been as contentious as they have been is because of lack of such guidelines, and would very much welcome any input from others to help come up with some generally acceptable solutions to some of these problems. Use of honorifics

I am new to the project and have a question. Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Biographies#Honorifics would seem to suggest that 'Swami' should not be part of article names or as an honorific in the article. Does this project have an alternative MOS? Thanks! jmcw (talk) 15:30, 8 January 2013 (UTC)

Welcome to the project:

Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Biographies#Honorifics states that the common practice dictates policy as does common sense.

1. The honorific Swami is usually kept as part of the name - as are other monastic honorifics.
2. The honorifics Paramahamsa (living saint) and Guru and Yogi can be generally removed.
3. The removing honorifics mandates checking of the naming convetion of the individual as well as adding a suitable reference in the article which is lamentably ignored by people who are just trying to increase their edit counts. E.g. what was the birth name and when did the individual assume the oaths etc.
4. Swami in citations should not be removed unless it is not part of the author's name as cited on the book. WP:V supersedes WP:MOS
5. Removal of Honorifics should never be done carelessly to alter the meaning of the sentence of create grammatical errors as has been done on a number of occasions recently. BO | Talk 16:33, 8 January 2013 (UTC)

Ah, good, we are making progress. The Swami who have left their birth name need the Honorific to identify their single name ( example: Swami Rama, Swami Maheshwarananda). Would this also apply to the honorific Sri? How would you apply your rules to Swami Vishnu Tirtha or Swami Shuddhananda Brahmachari? jmcw (talk) 22:50, 8 January 2013 (UTC)

List of mudras

Hi,

I'd like to expand on the List of mudras page. I created a page called 'List of Mudras (Yoga)' (can be found at User talk:SourabhJ/List of Mudras (Yoga)) but this was deleted, as some of the administrators thought it was a duplicate of 'List of mudras'.

I propose we create a disambiguation page for 'List of mudras', since there are not only hundreds of mudras, but several different types. The current page List of mudras addresses only the subject of Mudras in Indian Classical Dance. I wanted to confirm from the people managing the Yoga project what they think. The current section of Mudras and Bandhas on the List of asanas page can be expanded on significantly I think. SourabhJ (talk) 01:26, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

terminology for asanas

What is the correct name for the asasas? Cf. {{asana}}. Those listed do not have diacritics, but the articles are inconsistent in the titles. Can we bring them all to the nondiacritic form?Algircal (talk) 08:08, 3 August 2015 (UTC)

The article about the yogi Vishuddhananda Paramahansa was marked for speedy deletion as copyright violation. I changed it to proposed deletion, since the yogi may be relavant.
