There are already republican userboxes in the section Wikipedia:Userboxes/Location/European_Union/United_Kingdom#Politics but there is no single type of British republican and I wanted to include boxes that better represent users like myself. The first design is for general republicans. I wanted to use neutral colours and symbols as republicans disagree on which flag to use, what to call a British republic and what type of republic it should be but I would be open to suggestions on how to brighten it up. The second design is for supporters of the pressure group Republic (political organisation). Third design refers to one of Republic's slogans (Citizen not subject).

Awesome Window Manager.
Usage

This userbox could be useful for those who use the Awesome Window Manager. This is my first custom UBX; I hope it's okay but let me know if anything should be changed or if I can just go ahead and add it to the Software UBX page. —Myoglobin (talk) 23:48, 11 March 2016 (UTC)Myoglobin

Go ahead! Looks fine. Eman235/talk 01:10, 12 March 2016 (UTC)
@Myoglobin: Dear Myoglobin,
Your first userbox looks great; well done!
Sometimes, I like to centre the text, and add a 'new line' tag (<br>) to separate the main topic to its own, dedicated line, thereby giving it more prominence; as an example, see the userbox I added above, for users who admire the works of Fernando Pessoa. In your case, I daresay the product name Awesome Window Manager would stand out better if treated this way, but that's only my own, subjective preference; you (and many others) might prefer to keep it as you first created it, which is obviously fine. In any case, keep up the good work!
With kind regards;
Patrick. ツ Pdebee.(talk)(guestbook) 08:52, 12 March 2016 (UTC)
@Pdebee: Thanks! I was wondering how to do that. I changed the UBX to have centered text, and I'll be adding it to "Other Software" for now, though I might move it later if necessary (e.g. into a new section on Window Managers)
Myoglobin (talk) 14:25, 12 March 2016 (UTC)Myoglobin
I agree with Patrick. Look at the code for any of my boxes above (Mar 7 entry) and you will see I frequently use the new line tag. - Tim D. Williamson yak-yak 14:28, 12 March 2016 (UTC)
One last question: Do <br> tags need to be closed? I didn't on this UBX and it looks fine. I just want to use best practices.
Myoglobin (talk) 14:34, 12 March 2016 (UTC)Myoglobin
@Pdebee:Thanks again! <br> helped, but the <center></center> makes it look even better! Myoglobin (talk) 17:29, 12 March 2016 (UTC)Myoglobin

@Myoglobin: Dear Myoglobin,
You're most welcome; I am always happy to help where/when I can.
I am really glad you like it with centering, as I think your userbox now looks even cooler!   Seriously though, thank you for tolerating the liberty I took in changing your code a few minutes ago. (I also attempted to add an earlier version of the present explanation when it was deleted by an edit conflict; however these things happen.  )
You will have noticed that, in addition to adding the centering clauses, I also changed the way the code is presented, as this makes it easier on the eye and also helps to lay out the code with greater clarity, at least to my eye  . Also, a lot of userboxes are laid out in this way, and I daresay it seems to have become one of those established practices that one might call 'best'. However, since these things are really subjective, please feel free to revert my edit if you preferred the way you had laid out your code first time round, and please forgive me for intervening to this extent.
Also, you're quite right: one really ought to close pairs of breaks: first <br>, then </br>; however, since I often forget to close the second in a pair (because they're not always used in pairs, of course), it's just as well that it works without the '/'.
With kind regards;
Patrick. ツ Pdebee.(talk)(guestbook) 18:04, 12 March 2016 (UTC)

@Pdebee: No problem with your code edit! I'm learning, so I need all the help I can get. Thanks!
About <br>: Turns out the <br> tag is NOT supposed to be ended by a </br>! This MDN page states that it should not be an ended tag. So, I guess just one <br> is fine by itself! Myoglobin (talk) 00:10, 13 March 2016 (UTC)Myoglobin
I believe <br /> works as well. Eman235/talk 00:32, 13 March 2016 (UTC)
@Myoglobin: Well, In that case, I can only apologise for misleading you, based on my assumption that all these tags work on the same syntax. As you can see, we're all learning, all the time.
With kind regards;
Patrick. ツ Pdebee.(talk)(guestbook) 01:17, 13 March 2016 (UTC)
According to W3, "In HTML, the <br> tag has no end tag. In XHTML, the <br> tag must be properly closed, like this: <br />." My experience has been that, as Eman235 said, <br /> works. Oh, and that space between the br and the / is crucial. - Tim D. Williamson yak-yak
I agree with that, but I would like to point out that W3Schools is not the same as W3C, so this might be a more direct source. Myoglobin (talk) 02:35, 13 March 2016 (UTC)Myoglobin

 Hovercards add colour to Wikipedia browsing. Let's roll it out from beta!
Usage

With Hovercards being considered for rolling out as the default across a number of Wikis (providing there's enough broad support from everyone), I thought one way to show that support was by a colourful userbox. I couldn't find a way to get an internal link to work to a user's Preference page for Beta features - maybe someone else can help with that? Happy to see it tweaked, then added to WP:Userboxes/Wikipedia/Miscellaneous But if you're not amongst the 46,000 users currently taking advantage of a better browsing/linking experience, do give it a try . . and spread the word with a Userbox! Parkywiki (talk) 12:08, 14 March 2016 (UTC)

  • I don't object to the use of color, but that red on green is what makes my eyes ache... Would you consider a different color scheme that is less, well, "stabby"? Thanks! KDS4444 (talk) 08:33, 20 May 2016 (UTC)
  • Agree that the color scheme is hard on the eyes. It would likely be considered to be non-accessible to some who are color blind as there is very little contrast between the text and the background. The concept behind this userbox is great! Etamni | ✉   05:45, 30 May 2016 (UTC)
