2012 population estimates

Are the 2012 Census population estimates online? An anon has edited the Mosheim, Tennessee, article stating its population is now over 4,400, and cited fact-finder. I find it hard to believe Mosheim's population doubled over a 2-year period. Bms4880 (talk) 16:49, 31 January 2013 (UTC)

The Census does sometimes issue population estimates, but Wikipedia has traditionally stuck with the official numbers from the last Census. There's no indication where that Mosheim 2012 number came from (probably not the Census). I've reverted the edits to the Mosheim article. --Orlady (talk) 18:43, 31 January 2013 (UTC)

Davy Crockett

I'm posting this here in hopes this project has enough members to keep a long-term eye on Davy Crockett. I'm not sure at this point it would qualify for semi-protection, but I sure wish it did. I've recently done a number of edits on the article, and it could stand to be improved even more. But what struck me about the article is how much total junk was in the article, sitting there for years unchallenged, a large chunk of which has been dropped in years ago by an IP editor. The article has been in bad shape for a long time. Some of it has appeared to me to be deliberate hanky-panky. And some of it looks to be good faith edits by persons with limited knowledge of the subject matter. The legend aside, this man was a United States Congressman. It needs watchful eyes to make sure it doesn't disintegrate again. And in an ideal world, such a public figure would merit some dignity in a Wikipedia article. I think it might take some re-working to raise it up to the level of FA or GA, but I'm always hopeful. — Maile (talk) 16:18, 1 February 2013 (UTC)

I semi-protected the article -- and added it to my watchlist. Considering that it gets several thousand page views daily -- and seems (the 130 page-watchers notwithstanding) to get more consistent attention from vandals and people wanting to add original theories and legends than it does from "regulars" familiar with Wikipedia policy, I think we can justify a lower-than-normal threshold for semi-protection. Thanks. I moved most of the block of text about the Disney series to the separate article that already existed for it. Hopefully, somebody more qualified and neutral than I am can tackle the section about his death controversy. It seems to have a POV already. I personally believe the only one who knows for sure how Crockett died is Davy himself. But I'm not neutral enough to write about a book that (ironically) couldn't pass Wikipedia standards - as far as I know, no one has ever established the book was credible. List of municipalities in Tennessee

Hmm. It was incorporated in 1999, but apparently challenged in court and unincorporated in 2001 (I'm seeing a reference to Sumner County Chancery Court case 98C322, but can't locate an online record for it). I'm not sure why anything unincorporated is present in that list, and would suggest they all be removed. — Huntster (t @ c) 07:24, 1 March 2013 (UTC)

Quick answer: Several no-longer-unincorporated places are on the list because they were incorporated as of the 2000 census, and therefore appear[ed] on all manner of official lists of Tennessee cities and towns. I didn't see bias, but I felt a need to add some detail regarding his first (and so far, only) veto last year.

As long as you're adding to his article, do you think that the Presidential speculation in this current story in the Tennessean deserves attention yet? Even if we don't want to mention the notion that some people have suggested he could be a presidential candidate, the statements from national pundits about how he is perceived could be good material for the article.

I see no need to add the Presidential speculation, given that in a video interview with WSMV, he expressed zero interest in running. Knox County

I've begun editing the government section of the Knox County article. Have added subsections for Legislative and Executive branch, as well as sheriff. I think the judicial branch is going to be bit difficult to write with any detail, so it may be short -- basically an outline of each court. You were referring to the effect of a very recent edit to Y-12 National Security Complex. I reverted that edit, as I see it as unbalanced. Neither the 1999 accident nor the OREPA protests are nearly as significant in the facility's history as some other events, not all of which are covered in the article.

Overall, the article gives vestigial coverage to the subject of the facility. It could be expanded significantly to cover the plant's missions over the last 6 decades (to the extent that those missions aren't classified), the releases of mercury to East Fork Poplar Creek, and other topics. Furthermore, the information about the contractors needs to be updated. I'll take a stab at editing the lead, at least. --Orlady (talk) 19:06, 22 May 2013 (UTC)

Need to edit maps of Middle and East Tennessee

Yoo-hoo, are there any graphics gurus watching this page? The files File:East Tennessee-counties.png and File:Middle Tennessee.png (both currently hosted at Wikimedia Commons) need to be edited to show that Sequatchie County is officially part of Middle Tennessee, not East Tennessee. File:Appalachian-tennessee-arc-2003-status.jpg has a white line indicating the correct position of the boundary. The map on the last page of this section of the Tennessee Blue Book is an authoritative source. (I'd do it, but I don't think I know how!) --Orlady (talk) 23:06, 23 May 2013 (UTC)

My biggest hold-up was having to fix instances in non-English Wikipedias, which apparently had just copied the English article and translated, but for some reason every one of them used "frame" instead of "thumb", which doesn't work correctly in any way shape or form. Rocky River

Does the bend at 35.76873 -85.60457 fit the definition of a meander cutoff? It's blue on topographical and road maps, but appears to be dry on satellite images. It doesn't appear to affect the course of the river. Bms4880 (talk) 23:40, 2 July 2013 (UTC)

Bill Haslam

An anon added the statement, "Haslam was rated as "The Worst Governors in America" by the Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW)" to the lede of this article, and is adding it to the lede of any governor on the list. I removed it, as the site appears to be biased (all but two of the 18 listed are Republicans). If it's a legitimate site, we can re-add the statement, though it doesn't belong in the lede. Anyone know where to find the votes of individual House members on the 19th Amendment (January 10, 1918)? I'm trying to figure out whether Richard W. Austin voted yea or nay. Davy Crockett, same song, second verse (vandalism)

On Feb 3, 2013 Orlady semi-protected Davy Crockett with an expiration date of August 3, 2013. The protection template was removed August 4. Vandalism started up again August 14, 2013 and was instantly reverted by Cluebot NG. Hopefully, editors here can still keep an eye on Davy Crockett in case the vandalism escalates again. Lazy redirects

Citing Facebook

Second-oldest city in Tennessee

Dandridge has long proclaimed itself the second-oldest city in Tennessee, but I'm not sure how they're determined this. Greeneville also calls itself the second-oldest city/town in the state. Both appear to have been settled in 1783. Greeneville was incorporated in 1795, and Dandridge in 1799. I think Rogersville has made similar claims. Both the Dandridge and Rogersville articles describe their respective towns as the state's second-oldest.

Is there any way to sort this out, or should we start dumping the "second-oldest" claims? Bms4880 (talk) 17:53, 16 October 2013 (UTC)

Interesting issue! IMO, the encyclopedia articles for all of these places (plus any others that make the same claim) should document their early history in detail and with appropriate sources (not all of them do this now -- saying what happened when would be much better than blandly reporting "second oldest" status) and indicate that each of these towns is one of several that are sometimes identified as "second oldest" in the state. Presumably, the determination of "oldest" depends in part on what event is treated as their "establishment". (Depending on what's measured, I bet there are some other places that could claim to be "oldest" or "second oldest".) Incorporation isn't a particularly good indicator, since some towns were pretty thoroughly established before they officially incorporated.

Here's some evidence I rounded up in a quick search:

• Greeneville claims to have been founded in 1783.
• According to the Tennessee Encyclopedia, the first permanent settlement in Dandridge was in 1783.
• The Rogersville, Tennessee article, which is mostly based on a print source, indicates that Davy Crockett's family arrived in 1775, but sold out to Thomas Amis after the 1777 massacre; that Amis built a fort just outside Rogersville in 1780; and that Rogersville was designated the county seat of Spencer County, North Carolina, in 1785. This town history page indicates that Davy Crockett's grandparents had settled near Rogersville before the 1777 massacre and that the town was settled by Joseph Rogers in the "early 1780s". Rogersville Heritage Association indicates that Joseph Rogers started working on Amis' plantation near Rogersville around 1781 and that in 1786 he eloped with Amis' daughter and bought land of his own that later became Rogersville.

BTW, where is the article about Spencer County, North Carolina, a defunct county that was a precursor to the state of Franklin? --Orlady (talk) 19:19, 16 October 2013 (UTC)

Luttrell, Tennessee

I found something i thought to be strange here on Wikipedia Luttrell is listed as a "City" Go here to see and on the census website it is listed as a "Town", So is it a city or a town?. --ACase0000 (talk) 18:47, 21 December 2013 (UTC)

I would say it is a town because of the lower population. I don't know if being in the Knoxville Metropolitan statistical area has something to do with it, however. United States Man (talk) 18:55, 21 December 2013 (UTC)

Meltron?

Driving along US-411 from Maryville to Vonore, there is a sign that says "Meltron" with "Unincorporated" beneath it, like you see when entering unincorporated communities, just as you cross the Loudon County line. A sign saying the same thing stands on the opposite side of the road, about a mile west of the 411/95 intersection. I can't find anything about Meltron, however, and the people who live along this stretch of road have Greenback addresses (two of the businesses have "Greenback" in their names). No one I asked had ever heard of Meltron, other than the signs.

National Register of Historic Places photos

WP:WikiProject National Register of Historic Places is an active project that has generated a large fraction of the articles about Tennessee and other U.S. states (some are excellent articles, others are execrable, and many are in between). One of that project's goals is getting an image of every property listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Tennessee is lagging behind a number of other states -- less than half of our National Register properties are illustrated. Just a handful of folks contributed a large fraction of the Tennessee National Register photos that are in Wikipedia now (User:Bms4880, User:Andrew Jameson, User:EVula, User:NatureBoyMD, User:Kaldari, User:DoxTxob, User:Ichabod, User:Saxonjf, and User:Sesamehoneytart are among them).

Tennessee's larger cities generally have better coverage than most of the state's rural places, but I'm surprised to discover that some of Tennessee's metropolitan counties are still under-photographed. If you are in or near Williamson, Rutherford, Sumner, Washington, Hawkins, or Tipton counties and you can take digital photos (nowadays, who can't?), you have a great opportunity to contribute to Wikipedia by loading up the county National Register list and heading out with your camera. I didn't list nearly all of the counties needing pictures. If you are in some other part of the state, there are doubtless some voids for you to fill -- just look up your favorite counties at National Register of Historic Places listings in Tennessee to get a list of properties needing photographs. --Orlady (talk) 04:58, 22 January 2014 (UTC)

County border discrepancy

There seems to be a problem with the borders between Putnam and Fentress and Overton and Cumberland. According to what is on the Wiki articles, they all border each other, but this is physically impossible. According to Mapquest and Bing, as well as a DeLorme road atlas that I have, Overton and Cumberland do NOT border each other. In fact, the Fentress/Putnam border looks to be over one mile long and has State Highway 62 running across it. So, this would also impact Cumberland County's status as a U.S. county bordering eight or more states, knocking down from nine to eight. United States Man (talk) 21:51, 26 January 2014 (UTC)

That is strange. My guess is that whoever filled out the "adjacent counties" mistakenly believed there was a four-way intersection between Putnam, Overton, Fentress and Cumberland (it sort of looks like this on the little map of the state that appears in county infoboxes). But yes, the Putnam-Overton-Fentress intersection is about a mile west of the Putnam-Fentress-Cumberland intersection, at least according to topo maps. Bms4880 (talk) 23:56, 26 January 2014 (UTC)

Note that unlike other tools, this tool aggregates all views from redirects, which means it will typically have higher numbers. (For January 2014 specifically, 35 hours of data is missing from the WMF data, which was approximated from other dates. For most articles, this should yield a more accurate number. However, a few articles, like ones featured on the Main Page, may be off).

Web tools, to replace the ones at tools:~alexz/pop, will become available over the next few weeks at toollabs:popularpages. All of the historical data (back to July 2009 for some projects) has been copied over. The tool to view historical data is currently partially available (assessment data and a few projects may not be available at the moment). The tool to add new projects to the bot's list is also available now (editing the configuration of current projects coming soon). Unlike the previous tool, all changes will be effective immediately. OAuth is used to authenticate users, allowing only regular users to make changes to prevent abuse. A visible history of configuration additions and changes is coming soon. Once tools become fully available, their toolserver versions will redirect to Labs.

Alphabetizing

Does MOS mention anything about alphabetizing entities named after individuals, namely by first name or last name? Our NRHP lists use the surname, though several lists of national parks are using the first name. Bms4880 (talk) 17:44, 9 March 2014 (UTC)

The National Register lists alphabetize those types of entities by surname, but that's an anomaly. As you note, most other Wikipedia lists of entities named for people are alphabetized by the first name. Where are you getting 1739 for year of birth? Both the Tennessee Encyclopedia article and that Cisco book give the year as 1733. Also, one of your references has "Isaac Bledsoe" as the title, but links to the Anthony Bledsoe article. Bms4880 (talk) 17:31, 26 March 2014 (UTC)

It looks like the 1739 date comes from Find-A-Grave.com, which is not a reliable source. The Tennessee Encyclopedia article (by Walter Durham, who was Tennessee state historian) is loads better as a source. --Orlady (talk) 18:45, 26 March 2014 (UTC)

Black Patch Tobacco Wars and The Night Riders

Currently there are two separate articles, both created a long time ago, about the Black Patch Tobacco Wars and The Night Riders. Both articles are about essentially the same topic. I think it would make sense to merge them into a single article. However, I don't know much of anything about the topic, and I think it's possible that there is a reason to document the Night Riders separately from the Wars. I seek your advice: do the two articles both need to exist, or does it make sense to merge them? I would probably merge them into Black Patch Tobacco Wars, though I'm not familiar with the topic. "Night Riders" was an oft-used term for vigilante groups (as well as quasi-Klan groups) in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In West Tennessee, the term "Night Riders" would probably bring to mind the Reelfoot Lake vigilantes of 1908 ([5], [6], and [7]). Move Nathaniel Green Taylor?

An anon claiming to work at the Tipton-Haynes site has been making edits to articles changing the spelling of the above to "Nathaniel Greene Taylor." While the edits have been reverted (they butchered the piping), I did find this Tennessee Encyclopedia article and this book which use the "Greene" spelling. I don't know much about Taylor, but I do know that I've been confused by the multiple spellings of his name. Variant spellings of names are common in old records (and variations in the inclusion or omission of silent "E"s are particularly common), and it's likely that some writers have added the "E" to conform with the spelling of Nathanael Greene, who was popular as a namesake. The "Green" spelling seems to predominate in the sources (particularly in the more authoritative sources), so I think that's where the article title should stay. However, because of the variant spelling, two months ago I created Nathaniel Greene Taylor as a redirect. --Orlady (talk) 19:09, 10 April 2014 (UTC)

Isn't this Alexander Outlaw? If the article is already in Wikipedia, then it should be taken out of the article requests.

No, it isn't the same person. That article refers to Alexander Outlaw Anderson, not Alexander Outlaw (1738–1826). List of lieutenant governors of Tennessee

Is there a reason why the lieutenant governors list begins at 1870? I'm assuming it has something to do with the 1870 constitution, but the designation wasn't created until 1951 (before that, they were simply speakers of the senate, though their responsibilities were the same). I can't find a reliable source stating that Ramsey is the 49th, or Wilder was the 48th. That would be their order if counting from Dorsey B. Thomas.

Does anyone have local knowledge of McKenzie in Carroll County?

Does anyone have local knowledge of McKenzie? There's a discrepancy between two sources regarding the street address of the former building (National Register listed) of First Cumberland Presbyterian Church-McKenzie. I think the discrepancy possibly can be sorted out by somebody who knows the local situation. (My hypothesis is that the street numbering was revised during the last 20 years -- that kind of thing happens sometimes.) Please, someone with knowledge of early Tennessee history. Talk:Davy Crockett, section Semi-protected edit request on 15 November 2014. Refers to Diff. I personally don't care one way or another, except to get it correct. However, the change I reverted had no sourcing. Plus, the link to Greene County, NC, I believe is too far north to be where Crockett was born. Going by this map. But I've never lived in Tennessee. I think someone with knowledge of the area history, and the Wikipedia policy that covers this needs to weigh in. Hopefully, get it correct, either direction. Hello all! I was curious if anyone else thought it might be a good idea to make a (nonbinding) guideline on how all the individual US state WikiProjects should organize themselves, to help standardize them. I originally put this suggestion in the WikiProject United States talk page, so feel free to look there if you're interested. It's pretty empty though; basically all they said was to see what each of the individual projects thought about it. Y-12 and Calutrons

An editor attempted to add a hatnote to the History section of the Y-12 National Security Complex article pointing to the Calutron article as this section's "main article." I changed the hatnote to a seealso. Does anyone here know if either hatnote is accurate for this section? BrineStans (talk) 03:18, 10 June 2016 (UTC)

I removed it completely. It's linked in the section just fine in the sentence "The Y-12 facility began operating in November 1943, separating uranium-235 from natural uranium, which is 99.3% uranium-238, by using calutrons to perform electromagnetic isotope separation." WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

Land Between the Lakes structures located in Kentucky

I had an WP:AFC draft for Lake Barkley Bridge accepted and the reviewer added it to this WikiProject. However, Lake Barkley Bridge is located entirely within Kentucky. Do you all want to err on the side of including Land Between the Lakes related articles in your project as well as Kentucky's no matter where they are, or would you prefer to stick to geographical boundaries? User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

• John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

• John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14.

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.
