Swiss inventory of cultural property of national and regional significance

Hi, just for everyone's information, I had a meeting today with the officials responsible for this register. They're in the process of thoroughly revising it and making it accessible through a GIS web application by 2009 (so I'll stop importing info from the old 1995 register for now). They're interested in having some sort of collaboration with Wikipedia, such as cross-linking (yes, I told them we're a volunteer project, everything is subject to consensus and we can't guarantee anything, etc.). I've also indicated that it would be great if they could make their database of information and high-resolution images about historic and cultural sites in Switzerland available unter a CC-BY licence or similar, and they've expressed interest in the idea. Any contribution on their side would obviously be welcome. They may want to provide lists of specific types of cultural property [1] with as much detail as possible. We could use those to build articles, stubs, and infoboxes. Some types lend themselves better for wikipedia articles than others.

Yes, I told them that we could use the list to build indices in the vein of ISOS, and individual files as sources for articles about the monuments. They told me that they would approximately double the number of A-class objects and de-list some. That's why I've stopped importing data from the 1995 register (which is available in dead-tree form only) so that we don't have to do everything all over again. Within WikiProject Companies I am trying to establish guidelines for all Lists of companies by country, the implementation of which would hopefully ensure a minimum quality standard and level of consistency across all of these related but currently disparate articles. The ultimate goal is the improvement of these articles to Featured List status. As a WikiProject that currently has one of these lists within your scope, I would really appreciate your feedback! Mass witch trial

Hello! I have found several claimants on the net about a mass witch trial, which is said to have happened in Geneva in 1515. 500 people is said to have ben burned in this trial. I don't know how true this is. The number could be exagerated. Does anyone here know about this? Or can you recomend an english speaking site? Jules Michelet mentions in his essay "La Sorciere", that in 1513, 500 witches where put to death in only three months by the bishop of Geneva. But on this german page it is written that there is no credible source which proves it. Momet (talk) 06:40, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

It is the number of executed that is questionable. Some sources estimate ~2000 executions in the 16th and 17th century. I'm not an expert in this field, so I don't know which was the largest witch trial in Switzerland, sorry... But looking around on the net, I found that between 1581 und 1620 around 970 "witches" where exeuted in the canton Vaud [2], and only in 1599 74 people where executed [3] (again in the canton Vaud) Momet (talk) 12:14, 20 June 2008 (UTC)

Photo Requests?

Hi, I'll be in Switzerland starting this Sunday, June 15th and I was wondering if there was anything that possibly needs a photo. I'll mainly be in the north but will go into the high mountains for a few days. I'm already planning on taking stitched panoramic landscapes of Basel, Zürich, Bern and (if I make it there) of Geneva. I have a decent track record of getting of getting FPs (10 with an 11th on the way) so if there are any buildings or sights that are particularly visually appealing I'd love to have a go. Architecture that needs photos is of particular interest. Let me know. The more suggestions the better, as I will be able to make it to certain areas during the best light. Hi, and thanks for your message! There is indeed a lot of architecture in Switzerland that needs good photos. The Swiss inventory of cultural property of national and regional significance lists in its category A some 1,800 heritage sites of national significance that are considered the most significant, historically or otherwise. If you would like to take photographs of notable sites while in Switzerland, I think that list would provide a good selection of sites to choose from. Unfortunately, it exists only in printed form, but if you would like to, I can e-mail you scans of the pages corresponding to the municipalities that you intend to visit. I've also begun to write these places up in Wikipedia, but I've stopped for now because the government intends to revise the inventory in 2009.  Sandstein  05:46, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

Lake Parade

Hi! I just came across this article in the backlog for unclear notability. It appears that the parade is actually notable but most of the sources I found (see link on talk) are in French and I'm not comfortable enough in French to do it. For what it's worth, I'm Swiss and I read French, and I can confirm that the linked articles do confirm notability. They are by regional and national media covering various instances of this festival. It's on the order of several 100'000 participants and ten years' history, so, pretty big thing, if rather silly.  Sandstein  23:12, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

• The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
• The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
• A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Brugg

I am almost done translating the German-language article on Brugg into English. I am going to have problems when it comes to the education section (as one can already tell in my attempts to translate parts of the final history section). I already attempted translating it in MS Word, but gave up for the time being. It would be nice if someone could look over what I've done, which is the large bulk of the page, and make any appropriate style changes. To be honest, any help would be appreciated as this is my first translation attempt on Wikipedia. How would I put up the article for review here when I am finished? I started looking through it and came across some more typos, missing punctuation. I actually started translating the section on education weeks ago, but I was a bit uncertain as to how I should translate the different schools into English. Any ideas? Or should I leave certain institutions such as Bezirksschule, Realschule, and Sekundarschule in German? It is all very "relative" in Switzerland, i.e. the meaning of these schools depends upon the canton in which they are located -- hence the confusion.--Ami in CH (talk) 02:40, 26 August 2008 (UTC)

Category fix: People from Basel (city)

Basel is a Swiss city located on the border of both Germany and France. Basel is also the name of a Swiss canton that was divided in two in 1833. Categorizing things related to Basel is proving to be tricky, and Wikipedias in other languages have arrived at various solutions.

I'd like to open a discussion here about Category:People from Basel (city). An earlier discussion (at "Categories for discussion") drew only one other editor's comments.

Brief history: The city of Basel is more than 1,600 years old. Over the centuries it became a free imperial city and acquired a feudal domain (the Baselbiet or Basel-Land).

• In 1501 the city-state of Basel joined the Swiss Confederation.
• In 1798 the Canton of Basel was formed, with the city of Basel as its capital.
• In 1833 the Canton of Basel was divided into two "half-cantons": Basel-City (37 km²; 188,000 pop.) and Basel-Country (518 km², 270,000 pop.).

Basel has an ambiguous metropolitan area including some French and German territory. Of the Swiss towns adjoining Basel's city limits, some are in Basel-City and some in Basel-Country. (Maps: Basel-Country, Basel-City)

Question: How should we categorize people from the Basel area?

• Do we need a separate category for people from within the city limits and those from outside, or can Category:People from Basel describe both?
• Should we use the modern cantonal boundaries as category boundaries, setting up Category:People from Basel-City and Category:People from Basel-Country?

Category history:

• In cases in which a Swiss canton and its capital have the same name, Wikipedians have noted the distinction in categories this way: Category:People from Fribourg (city) and Category:People from the Canton of Fribourg. Basel does not fit this case.
• Category:People from Basel (city) was called Category:People from Basel until September 2007. (See the decision to rename.) Editors had used Category:People from Basel to categorize people from Basel, Basel-City, and Basel-Country. (The distinctions can be confusing, as in this discussion about the main Basel article.)
• We have Category:Basel-City and Category:Basel-Country, but no Category:Basel. The article on Basel is in Category:Basel-City.
• Subcategories of Category:Basel-City are inconsistent: 5 refer to "Basel," 2 to "Basel-City," and 1 to "Basel (city)."
• There is no Category:People from Basel-City, but there is a Category:People from Basel-Country. It contained one article (Emil Frey) until I recently added more.
• Category:People from Basel (city) is listed under Category:People by city in Switzerland but not under Category:Swiss people by canton.
• Category:People from Basel (city) contains 61 articles.

Interwiki comparison: Fourteen Wikipedias have "Basel" and/or "Basel-City" categories (CS DE EN EO ES FI FR IT JA LB NL NO RU SV). They have varying methods of resolving the ambiguity about the meaning of "Basel." Examples:

• DE (German) method: For purposes of categorizing, "Basel" refers to the entire region. So Kategorie:Basel includes subcategories about both Basel-City and Basel-Country.
• FR (French) method: "Basel" means, in effect, the canton of Basel-City. Catégorie:Personnalité bâloise (People of Basel) is a subcat of Catégorie:Canton de Bâle-Ville (Canton of Basel-City).
• NO (Norwegian) method: "Basel" means the city alone, and it is placed hierarchically below "Basel-City." Kategori:Personer_fra_Basel (People from Basel) is a subcat of Kategori:Personer fra Basel Stadt (People from Basel-City), which has no other members.
• RU (Russian) method: Категория:Персоналии:Базель (People of Basel) is a subcategory of Категория:Базель (Basel), which in turn is a subcat of Категория:Города Базель-Штадта (Basel-City). This leaves room for ambiguity, in theory, but in practice I think the category "People of Basel" is defined broadly, despite its low place in the category hierarchy.

Suggested outcomes:

1. DE method: Change Category:People from Basel (city) back to Category:People from Basel and let it include anyone from metro Basel, Basel-City, or Basel-Country. Merge Category:People from Basel-Country.
2. DE variant: Same as above, but keep Category:People from Basel-Country as a subcat of Category:People from Basel. (I argued for this outcome in the earlier discussion.)
3. FR method: Change Category:People from Basel (city) to Category:People from Basel-City. Move articles to Category:People from Basel-Country as needed.
4. NO method: Change Category:People from Basel (city) to Category:People from Basel-City, then add a subcat Category: People from Basel. Move articles as needed. Where there is ambiguity, place them in the "Basel-City" category.
5. Three-fork method: Create Category:People from Basel-City in addition to Category:People from Basel (city) and Category:People from Basel-Country.
6. Tory (i.e., conservative EN) method: Leave Category:People from Basel (city) and Category:People from Basel-Country as they are, without addressing the ambiguity. Tell User:Alarob to get a life.

It would be good to have other sources besides those you've found online (although you did find a good selection). If you read French or German, there are biographies of Suchard in those languages. (Unfortunately no one has published a biography in English that I can find.) See the French article for titles.

Romansch Wikipedia - a new project?

The article Grock was identified as a copyright violation of this Britannica article. Violation, unfortunately, stretched all the way back to the article's creation, when it was copied & pasted from that source. PostBus

I decided to spend tonight working on the Postauto page and have realized that it was a mistake to label the page "PostBus." If we are going to use the Swiss Standard German term, it should be called Postauto. The German-language page makes this explicit:

"Postauto, also called “Poschi” or “Poschti” in Swiss German dialect, is the Swiss Standard German term used in Switzerland for the motorized successor to stagecoaches. In other German-speaking countries the term “Postbus” is used. This linguistic anomaly also exists in the French and Italian-speaking parts of Switzerland, where the terms “Car postal” (French) and “Autopostale” (Italian) are used." ("Postauto (familiär auch Poschi oder Poschti) wird in der Schweiz generell als Begriff für die motorisierten Nachfolger der Postkutschen verwendet, in anderen Ländern ist dafür der Begriff Postbus gebräuchlich. I would like to complain about this "standard." Zürich Hauptbahnhof is listed as such despite the fact that the SBB has translated and thus says / uses the designation "Zurich Main Station." Most InterCity (IC) and InterRegio (IR) trains announce Zurich Main Station in English when pulling into the station and then repeat the same in French (Gare de Zurich). If "PostBus" is used, Zurich Main Station should be used. If Zürich Hauptbahnhof is used, Postauto should be used.--Ami in CH (talk) 06:52, 29 November 2008 (UTC)

Someone else changed the page over to Postauto a couple of weeks ago without commenting here. I'm very glad they did. No one in Switzerland (other than the company itself) would call it PostBus.
