Article List

What is the purpose of the article list?

I can see the benefit in listing missing pages on the Project page, plus (maybe) stub articles, and pages requiring attention in some way, but a complete list of 'Surrey' articles will swamp this page. At the very least it needs to exist on its own page, and then it can be used to do 'Recent Changes' monitoring on all project-related articles. (See WikiProject Thomas article list, which is 42 kbytes long!)

As you will see from the WP:THOMAS example, also listing all redirects allows project members to monitor vandal-like activity (eg un-merging a merge) from a single place.

Incidentally, there are WP templates for multiple column display that also work with IE.

Surrey map

I have drawn a map of Surrey (right) to be used as the location map in the UK places infobox for Surrey place articles. The map is designed to be of similar style to ones used elsewhere in the UK (e.g. London, Manchester). So far I have only deployed it at Guildford, but you can see some tests in my sandbox. Please let me know if there are any errors or major omissions. Thanks, —Jeremy (talk) 17:28, 15 April 2007 (UTC)

I've added the map to each article on a place in Surrey which already had a standard infobox. Warofdreams talk 01:23, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

I live in Croydon, which is in Greater London, not within your map, but traditionally that was surrey. i think you should consider a historical map of surrey including as far as the River Thames Breakfast100 19:21, 10 May 2007 (UTC)

WikiProject Surrey discussion from Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Proposals

Description
I would like to start a WikiProject in the name of this fine Home County, in which I live. There are too few articles on Surrey beyond basic town articles - for example, Nikolaus Pevsner describes Surrey (in his Buildings of England) as being one of the richest counties in the country for Gothic Revival churches. I will start the project, but I am announcing it here anyway to try and get people interested--Vox Humana 8' 17:40, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

People from Categories

A discussion has been opened at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject London#Category:People from Ealing by district about upmerging local area categories for People from... into current local government boundaries only. This could have implications across the whole of England if carried through. Your are invited to join the discussion. The proposer is planning a massive merge by 22nd June if no objections are received. --Regan123 11:31, 17 June 2007 (UTC)

Idea copying

Wikipedia:WikiProject Kent is more advanced and may be worth looking at for ideas of how to arrange and structure the project, particularly the way articles are categorised by both importance and quality. Timrollpickering 08:09, 17 August 2007 (UTC)

Assessment

I've modified the template to allow for articles to be categorised (most categories created) by both quality and importance, following the model used for WP:KENT. In conjunction with this I'll add information onto the project page to a) help with adding the template and b) allow people to identify articles to help with. Timrollpickering 11:48, 17 August 2007 (UTC)

Okay. However the class is too big and really out-classes the other projects (excuse the pun). Simply south 19:56, 17 August 2007 (UTC)
E.g. Talk:Dormans railway station.
Agreed - is anyone skilled enough with templates to get it down to size?
In terms of importance, so far I've got:
Top importance: Surrey
High importance: All eleven districts, all the towns, History of Surrey and List of places in Surrey
Mid importance: Some odds and sods, mainly Surrey wide: List of Parliamentary constituencies in Surrey, North Downs, Surrey Police, Surrey local elections and University of Surrey
Low importance: Lots of transport so far - roads, railway stations, railway lines, railway companies, coach companies, canals, postcode areas, the Dioceses covering the county.
But these are by no means set in stone.
Not yet assessed are a lot of things, the most crucial of which are the villages. Are they all high importance or should there be a minimum population requirement - say 10,000 - with the rest in mid importance? Timrollpickering 08:25, 18 August 2007 (UTC)

As for assessment itself, here's a direct link to the current table:

Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Surrey articles by quality statistics

You'll note most articles are still to be assessed and most of the ones which have are because they've been done by other Projectes. Timrollpickering 20:52, 18 August 2007 (UTC)

YOu might want to overhaul the assement page of "WikiProject Surrey" as your own rather than the gerneric WP:1.0 ([[Wikipedia:Version_1.0_Editorial_Team/Assessment|here]) one. I've jsut done it to WP:Kent - here (shamelessly ripping off the TrainWikiProject one). I also changed the banner template, so on all project pages, the template points to the project's assement department page. Which would of course includes the talk above about importance, etc - hope that makes sense. Pickle 03:55, 22 August 2007 (UTC)

Links

Why doesn't Surrey have a link to Portal:Surrey? If it should have one, where should it be - at teh top? In a see also at the end? -- SGBailey 10:35, 2 September 2007 (UTC)

Settlement guidelines

Just a line trying to promote some trans-WikiProject guidelines for settlement articles. WP:UKCITIES are guidelines from the "mother" WP:UKGEO project based on those at WP:CITIES (A "global" WikiProject for settlements that is US driven). They have been employed by a number of articles to drive them towards good and featured article status with considerable success, and are so far also endorssed by Wikipedia:WikiProject Greater Manchester, Wikipedia:WikiProject Cheshire, Wikipedia:WikiProject Yorkshire and Wikipedia:WikiProject Sheffield, amongst others.

Not too many users are aware of the guidelines, and thought it may be helpful if the county WikiProjects had a link to them to help them get the results they want. Hope that helps, Jza84 13:04, 9 October 2007 (UTC)

This hasn't generated much of a response; I'll be bold and add this to the mainspace. Other county WikiProjects have since adopted this approach too (e.g. WP:Somerset and WP:KENT), so hopefully it's not contentious in anyway. -- Jza84 · (talk) 10:57, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

Museums in Surrey

Could I ask for some help accessing local knowledge, from members of this wikiproject, on the behalf of the new WikiProject Museums? We are currently trying to identify articles within the Museum projects scope (& develop guidelines to help improve them etc). There is a List of museums in Surrey. Could you take a look at the list for your local area and see if any are missing or create articles for any red links. Could you also add the new project banner "{{WikiProject Museums}}" to the Talk pages of the articles, so that we can identify those in need of work etc. Any help appreciated &, if anyone is interested you are welcome to join the project or discuss Museum related articles on the Project Talk Page.— Rod talk 14:13, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. This scheme should allow the team to start producing offline selections for your project and the wider community within the next year. Thanks for using the Wikipedia 1.0 scheme! Articles flagged for cleanup

Currently, 694 articles are assigned to this project, of which 106, or 15.3%, are flagged for cleanup of some sort. (Data as of 14 July 2008.) Are you interested in finding out more? I am offering to generate cleanup to-do lists on a project or work group level. See User:B. Wolterding/Cleanup listings for details. More than 150 projects and work groups have already subscribed, and adding a subscription for yours is easy - just place the following template on your project page:

Wikipedia 0.7 articles have been selected for Surrey

Wikipedia 0.7 is a collection of English Wikipedia articles due to be released on DVD, and available for free download, later this year. The Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team has made an automated selection of articles for Version 0.7.

We would like to ask you to review the articles selected from this project. These were chosen from the articles with this project's talk page tag, based on the rated importance and quality. If there are any specific articles that should be removed, please let us know at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.7. You can also nominate additional articles for release, following the procedure at Wikipedia:Release Version Nominations.

A list of selected articles with cleanup tags, sorted by project, is available. The list is automatically updated each hour when it is loaded. Please try to fix any urgent problems in the selected articles. A team of copyeditors has agreed to help with copyediting requests, although you should try to fix simple issues on your own if possible.

We would also appreciate your help in identifying the version of each article that you think we should use, to help avoid vandalism or POV issues. These versions can be recorded at this project's subpage of User:SelectionBot/0.7. We are planning to release the selection for the holiday season, so we ask you to select the revisions before October 20. At that time, we will use an automatic process to identify which version of each article to release, if no version has been manually selected. Thanks! For the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial team, SelectionBot 23:08, 15 September 2008 (UTC)

Missing geographical coordinates

Many Surrey articles are missing geographical coordinates. Finding the latitude and longitude of locations, and entering coordinates into articles is straightforwards, and explained at Wikipedia:Geocoding how-to for WikiProject members. Having coordinates on articles mean that they turn up in GoogleMaps, MultiMap and other such places which link to wikipedia based on geo-coordinates.

It is now possible to get lists of Surrey articles that have no geographical coordinates via Wikipedia:CatScan, for example:

Alternatively, if CatScan is down or very slow, you can find them by looking through Category:United Kingdom articles missing geocoordinate data.

The articles in the lists above are currently marked with {{coord missing}} templates, which need replacing with filled in {{coord}} templates containing their latitude/longitude data (or else have lat&long entered into the infobox).

There are about 240 articles missing coords - I hope you'll consider adding coordinates so as to make Surrey articles more visible on the web. thanks --Tagishsimon (talk) 20:15, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

Update. Articles needing coordinates have been placed into a category. 17 articles in Category:Surrey articles missing geocoordinate data do not have geographic coordinates. Coords are useful for making the article appear on Google Maps & many other mapping services; and they allow our users to click through to see the article subject location on a map. There's a short guide to on how to add geocodes to articles ... it really is very easy to do. I hope you'll take some time to ensure that Surrey is as well represented as it can be on wikipedia by fixing up the listed articles. thanks --Tagishsimon (talk) 23:24, 4 December 2008 (UTC)

Coordinators' working group

Hi! I'd like to draw your attention to the new WikiProject coordinators' working group, an effort to bring both official and unofficial WikiProject coordinators together so that the projects can more easily develop consensus and collaborate. This group has been created after discussion regarding possible changes to the A-Class review system, and that may be one of the first things discussed by interested coordinators.

All designated project coordinators are invited to join this working group. If your project hasn't formally designated any editors as coordinators, but you are someone who regularly deals with coordination tasks in the project, please feel free to join as well. — Delievered by §hepBot (Disable) on behalf of the WikiProject coordinators' working group at 06:40, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.

If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Wikipedia:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts". Questions and feedback should be left at Wikipedia talk:Article alerts.

Message sent by User:Addbot to all active wiki projects per request, Comments on the message and bot are welcome here.

Thanks. — Headbomb {ταλκκοντριβς – WP Physics} 09:43, 15 March, 2009 (UTC)

Bluebell Railway

I see that this article is tagged with WP Surrey. I was going to remove the article from this WP but note that it is rated as High importance.

Should this article be part of this WP? I does not run at any point in Surrey, nor will it be once the extension to East Grinstead is completed. Mjroots (talk) 05:50, 10 May 2009 (UTC)

I suspect this was a mistake -- I'll remove it in due course (see Talk:Bluebell Railway for further comment.
