Akitoshi Kawazu

Hi. Just letting the project know, I've just done an extensive expansion on the page for Akitoshi Kawazu. It's still sort of in progress as more sources are needed, but some additional feedback and edits would be welcome as I was thinking of turning it into a GA. --ProtoDrake (talk) 23:48, 7 March 2021 (UTC)

One last article with a cleanup tag! Needs a rewrite, and I just can't seem to manage it at the moment! Wanted to post it here so that if someone was interested in us having no more cleanup tags once again, this is the last thing to do. I did a bunch of minor fixes and expanded a reception section, PresN fixed the plot of Final Fantasy XII, and ProtoDrake helped research Final Fantasy Unlimited, so go team! Final Fantasy IX Featured Article of the Day nomination

Vote for it to be on the main page! Judgesurreal777 (talk) 01:44, 20 April 2021 (UTC)

All the articles are featured or good quality, am I seeing things? If not, it would be great to nominate! And if one of those GA’s flipped to FA, it would be a featured topic. :)Judgesurreal777 (talk)

Good Article Reviewers

Would love for our current Good Articles to be reviewed, you obviously don’t have to even like the quality of the articles, but identifying what needs to be done to achieve it and giving the nominative time to fix the problems would be awesome. We have four nominated at present and no active reviews, so please feel free to demand excellence and get us reviewed! Judgesurreal777 (talk) 16:53, 11 May 2021 (UTC)

Final Fantasy IX cleanup

@PresN: @ProtoDrake: @Axem Titanium: So we are a few days away from Final Fantasy IX being on the main page, and we have some notes on corrections that they want to see before it gets listed. I have been picking away at it, rewriting and cleaning, but I could use some help. I didn’t realize how much there was to be done, it looked so good :) Any help would be greatly appreciated. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 19:58, 18 May 2021 (UTC)

  • “The sourcing in Gameplay is not up to modern standard, hinging mostly on the game's instruction manual instead of RS. Prose is hard to follow for the non-gamer as jargon could be better explained.
  • Setting and characters very thin on sourcing (maybe ok per WP:PLOTSOURCE?)
  • plot violates WP:VG/CONTENT at 770 words.
  • Prose needs tightening in spots, lots of examples below FA standard (particularly in gameplay). Two big ones that stood out: "Moogles may request the playable character deliver letters to other Moogles via Mognet, playable characters might also receive letters from non-playable characters"; "The movies are seen as emotive and compelling, and the seamless transition and incorporation to the in-game graphics helped to move the plot well".
  • Numerous choppy paragraphs; the opening three "paragraphs" in reception are disorganised.
  • Nothing that evaluates the game in retrospect?”
Thanks for the heads-up. I'll peck away at it when I get the chance. Axem Titanium (talk) 20:16, 18 May 2021 (UTC)

Hey @ProtoDrake:, has anyone ever evaluated Final Fantasy IX in retrospect? Judgesurreal777 (talk) 00:45, 22 May 2021 (UTC)
There sure is. Note that I did cast a wide net here. Haleth (talk) 01:31, 22 May 2021 (UTC)

@PresN:, could you cut about 87 words from the plot description? You’re really good at summarizing. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 00:48, 22 May 2021 (UTC)
I gave it my once-over. I think it's in good shape. Sourcing gameplay to the instruction booklet and plot to the game itself is totally standard procedure. Looks like you already managed to trim the plot down but the 700 word "limit" is just a guideline. Don't break your back trying to meet it, particularly for story-heavy games. Can anyone take a look at Masayoshi Soken and see if there's any gaps in the coverage? I'd like to bring it to GAN soon. Any additional sources you can find would be great as well! Thanks, Axem Titanium (talk) 21:40, 23 May 2021 (UTC)

Lead of X-1

I tried trimming the plot section of Final Fantasy X and revised the premise of the lead to make it look like what Final Fantasy VII was modified by User:ProtoDrake when he turned that article into a FA. Now I added fact in the lead section that Jecht is Sin which is the real reason Tidus becomes a guardian. However, a fellow user has been reverting it calling it a spoiler but I don't see it as such considering it's in the first paragraph kinda like how VII shows that Aerith has the key to stop Sephiroth. Any idea?Tintor2 (talk) 23:26, 23 May 2021 (UTC)

Now I've been accused of vandalism.Tintor2 (talk) 00:21, 24 May 2021 (UTC)

Given the recent slew of templates by other editors about edit warring and disruptive edits on the editor’s talk page, I wouldn’t worry too much about what they think. Just dropped one myself. Haleth (talk) 00:34, 24 May 2021 (UTC)

Main page vandalism or just bad edits

Various editors are:

  • Adding citation tags in the intro when there are references in the body
  • making active sentences passive
  • un-wikilinking words that are linked only once
  • linking words that are already linked

I'm about to run out of reverts, so I could use some help. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 02:34, 24 May 2021 (UTC)

Eh, that's how main page days go. Don't worry about it, just revert the lot (well, anything that's not helpful, which in my experience is almost all of it) at the end of the day. --PresN 02:41, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
Thanks @PresN:, that is good and calming advice :) Judgesurreal777 (talk) 02:45, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
No worries; in my experience anything "obviously" bad will get reverted by other people immediately, while the small but wrong things like mucking up "wikilink the first instance" or introducing really idiosyncratic grammar "fixes" don't much matter to readers and can be swept away en masse at the end. It's not worth the headache trying to keep it pristine minute-by-minute, just focus on how many extra readers the article will get. --PresN 02:49, 24 May 2021 (UTC)

FF14 plot sections

Hi, I'm not an MMO player and don't feel I have the knowledge to do this myself, so I'm posting about it here: the plot sections for FF14 and its expansions are enormous, far beyond the recommended 700. Even if you don't count the lengthy "Setting and characters" sections, Final Fantasy XIV's is 1,707 words long, Heavensward's is 1,934, Stormblood's is 1,743, and Shadowbringers' is 2,201. The first three are GAs, and all are otherwise well developed articles. If you're knowledgeable on this game and have the time, please take a look.--AlexandraIDV 08:39, 31 May 2021 (UTC)

Hi Alexandra. I haven't checked recently to trim back some of the bloat/cruft that's accumulated since their GANs so I can't vouch for them at this very moment, but I've been treating them as falling under the episodic game guideline for plot summaries. As an MMO, they were updated regularly with story content (a full RPG-length story in the base game plus 5 "episodes" released over the course of their patch cycle). It's also written as a dense serialized story with many interconnected plotlines that reach between expansions. I've tried my best to cut down to the bare minimum. Particularly with Shadowbringers, the last episode was only just released a week ago so I'm sure other editors have rushed in to describe it in overmuch detail. I usually wait until the next expansion releases so I have a good perspective on what's relevant before I rewrite that section and trim it down. Axem Titanium (talk) 09:36, 2 June 2021 (UTC)
Even if treated as episodes, that's a lot, though. The MOS suggests that with episodes, a single 700-word summary is still an option, and given how many episodes are added this seems preferable.--AlexandraIDV 07:42, 4 June 2021 (UTC)

Compilation interview

@ProtoDrake: or anybody who knows Japanese. Found this interview about the main cast from FFVII involving the novels and the film AC. I can't translate through Google due to the website's format but based it appears it could expand the creation section of the cast. Happy editing.Tintor2 (talk) 00:28, 21 June 2021 (UTC)

As a note, you can get the raw text (sort of) through websites like [1], and then run the result through Google. The result is a bit messy, but can get the point across. --PresN 01:47, 21 June 2021 (UTC)

Possible FF3 split?

With FF3 2D version getting a remaster, will we finally be able to split the 3D remake if we have enough reviews for the 2D remaster?Blue Pumpkin Pie (talk) 20:53, 1 July 2021 (UTC)

Also with Square Enix giving it official disambiguation, we may be able to use those instead of (year game).Blue Pumpkin Pie (talk) 21:01, 1 July 2021 (UTC)

Yeah, it sounds like a viable split. I never liked the merge anyway to be honest, even if I could understand why it was done. - Bryn (talk) (contributions) 23:31, 1 July 2021 (UTC)
I think there are plenty of reviews now for FF3 pixel remaster. Should we start the split process?Blue Pumpkin Pie (talk) 20:15, 25 August 2021 (UTC)
Perhaps we should fill up the main article first, then seeing if we need to split. The article Final Fantasy III will be the main article is there is a split, and should only be split if the main article is overful and we have enough for a new GA In my opinion. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 20:29, 25 August 2021 (UTC)
There's plenty of info on the 3d remake separate from the original/pixel remaster. The only thing stopping it to be split originally was the lack of reviews for the 2D version.Blue Pumpkin Pie (talk) 20:44, 25 August 2021 (UTC)

GA Articles about artists without cited gameographies

So most of our articles about artists have a list of all the games they worked on, and many of them are reliably sourced. However, we have 8 GA’s that I have had difficulty finding reliable sources to verify their gameographies. They are;

Our excellent regulars please take note, take a look, see if you have sources I don’t know about! I’d love to see them. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 17:03, 29 July 2021 (UTC)

@PresN:, @ProtoDrake:

For Eguchi, I was able to find links to OST where he's credited but no news outlet. If that's enough, then maybe we can add that in.Blue Pumpkin Pie (talk) 18:02, 29 July 2021 (UTC)

I have trouble keeping track what sources are RS when it comes to gameography, it’s it’s RS either post it somewhere or add it, whatever your preference. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 18:14, 29 July 2021 (UTC)
The way I normally source for JP composers/staff members is using the Japanese title and composer name, and looking for websites that have interviews or news releases. Basic rule of thumb is put the composer name in quotes during searches, so it isolates them within sources. VGMDB is also a good means of finding alternate sources through their related links page if an album was released. At worst, you need to cite the game itself, but that's a last resort.
On an @Judgesurreal777:, for Shimomura, the Rise of Mana article actually has the citation for her contribution already there, and for the other uncited Half-Minute one this 4Gamer.net article lists all composers including Shimomura. --ProtoDrake (talk) 19:04, 29 July 2021 (UTC)
Ok great @ProtoDrake:, I’ll try that and see what shakes loose. I feel like at some point in the future I would really like @PresN: to look at our artist bio articles because I have tried to source them best I can, but I fear that many have references we do not consider reliable and need replacing. I’d love us to make a “do not use” list. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 19:32, 29 July 2021 (UTC)

Suggesting new articles for this project

Hey! So I would like to make a few suggestions as new articles to be within the scope of this project. The first is Schoolgirl Strikers, which as a video game developed and published by Square Enix, I believe it meets the scope. The other suggestion is Gangan Comics and its accompanying list List of Gangan Comics manga franchises. They both detail Square Enix's manga magazines and brands related to the subject. While they aren't video games, the project's scope does include manga, and they are all run by Square Enix. Thoughts? Link20XX (talk) 21:47, 5 August 2021 (UTC)

@Link20XX: Well, I'd say Schoolgirl Strikers should be included already if it was developed by SE, so I'll go ahead and add it; as for Gangan comics I'm opposed. For one thing, no one here has ever expressed an interest in working on manga articles (quite the opposite, really), and second if we expand the scope to Gangan then we'd realistically have to add all of the individual franchises, I don't think it would make logical sense to only claim the head article/list, which is a massive expansion of stuff that people aren't keen on working on. --PresN 02:00, 6 August 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply. As for Gangan Comics, just thought I would ask since manga is explicitly stated to be in the project's scope. Link20XX (talk) 02:07, 6 August 2021 (UTC)

Final Fantasy Tactics

I am hoping to bring Final Fantasy Tactics back to FA standards so that it can be Today's Featured Article on the game's 25th anniversary in June 2022. However, I have never written a video game FA and I don't know if anything is missing in the article. Can some experienced video game writers read through the article and either help fix it up or post their concerns on the article's talk page? If there are any concerns or questions, please do not hesitate to ping me. Thanks, and I appreciate the help. Z1720 (talk) 21:47, 6 September 2021 (UTC)
