Taskforce

I noticed that WP Relativity, WP Fluid dynamics and WP Acoustics all have low level of participation, if any. I would propose making them taskforces of WP Physics rather than WikiProjects due to the relatively low number of articles under their wings. I think participation in them would increase if they were made taskforces, as well as make it easier to coordinate efforts. Any thoughts?

Recent Recruiting:

Reviving this project.

Hi, I'm Headbomb (Gaëtan Landry if you need to have a name). I coordinate the physics projects, and since people want to revive this taskforce, here's a few pointers.

Recruiting:

• Place a notice on talk:sound, talk:acoustics, and other highly pertinent acoustic-related talk pages to let people know about the project. I can take care of that if you identify what the pertinent pages are.
• We very badly need experts. If you know any (a colleague, a friend, some person you worked with in the past, ...) it's a good idea to invite them to join the project/taskforce. Editing Wikipedia may be intimidating at first, but the community is very supportive, and people truly help each other get the hang of things. If they aren't interested in editing, they may be interested in reviewing, and we do need knowledgeable reviewers too.

Bots:
Bots are incredibly useful for tedious tasks, such as article monitoring, etc... There are ways to get bot support for this project, and I can help there too.

• Monitoring newly created articles: If you build a list of acoustics-related keywords, AlexNewArtBot will deliver daily reports of newly created articles containing those keywords. Phonon and acoustics are exemples of good keywords. It is not necessary that the keywords are false-positive proof, but loosely-associated keywords such as music should be avoided.
• Monitoring discussions: This project is subscribed to Article alerts, which delivers daily reports of proposed deletions, peer reviews, and so on. Please watch Wikipedia:WikiProject Physics/Taskforces/Acoustics/Article alerts to be notified of these (your watchlist must show bot edits).
• Cleanup: WolterBot compiles a cleanup listing every few months. If you want to help, you can find work to do there (you can remove what you cleanup for that list if you want to keep track of what you've cleaned up).

Tagging:
Tagging acoustics-related articles with {{physics|class=|importance=|acoustics=yes}} is imperative for the good operation of this project. Tagging is how projects keep tab on their articles. Untagged articles are not picked up by bots, and are not as-well monitored, making them more vulnerable to spam, vandalism, conflicts of interest, etc... If you see something that is acoustics-related, tag it! (However, sound production-related articles should be tagged with {{WikiProject Professional sound production}} instead.)

Changes to popular pages lists

There are a few important changes to the popular pages system. A quick summary:

• The "importance" ranking (for projects that use it) will be included in the lists along with assessment.
• The default list size has been lowered to 500 entries (from 1000)
• I've set up a project on the Toolserver for the popular pages - tools:~alexz/pop/.
  • This includes a page to view the results for projects, including the in-progress results from the current month. Currently this can only show the results from a single project in one month. Features to see multiple projects or multiple months may be added later.
  • This includes a new interface for making requests to add a new project to the list.
  • There is also a form to request a change to the configuration for a project. Currently the configurable options are the size of the on-wiki list and the project subpage used for the list.
• The on-wiki list should be generated and posted in a more timely and consistent manner than before.
• The data is now retained indefinitely.
• The script used to generate the pages has changed. The output should be the same. Please report any apparent inconsistencies (see below).
• Bugs and feature requests should be reported using the Toolserver's bug tracker for "alexz's tools" - [1]

Acoustic dispersion

It appears to me that there is a need for an article regarding the subject of dispersion as related to acoustics or sound. Two appropriate titles that have occured to me are Acoustic dispersion or Dispersion (acoustics). Or even something like Sonic dispersion. Anyway, I may go ahead and create a stub, but other than that, this will require someone with more knowledge of this subject than I have. Acoustics articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Acoustics articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. Request

Could someone explain this phenomenon and update the labyrinth article accordingly? It isn't addressed at all in Labyrinth even though it is quite common to modern labyrinths:

When standing in the center of certain labyrinths, particularly those made from radially positioned stone or brick tiles, one (or a group) can stand or sit in the middle and shout or hit the ground, and an echo is audible, but only to those in the center of the labyrinth. Bystanders outside the center hear the sound normally, without an echo, and may stop and stare at those whacking the ground since they don't hear the funny echoes. Citation templates now support more identifiers

Recent changes were made to citations templates (such as {{citation}}, {{cite journal}}, {{cite web}}...). In addition to what was previously supported (bibcode, doi, jstor, isbn, ...), templates now support arXiv, ASIN, JFM, LCCN, MR, OL, OSTI, RFC, SSRN and Zbl. Before, you needed to place |id={{arxiv|0123.4567}} (or worse |url=http://arxiv.org/abs/0123.4567), now you can simply use |arxiv=0123.4567, likewise for |id={{JSTOR|0123456789}} and |url=http://www.jstor.org/stable/0123456789 → |jstor=0123456789.

The full list of supported identifiers is given here (with dummy values):

Teylers Challenge: acoustic instruments

Allow me to draw your attention to the Wiki Project Teylers: a collaboration between Wikipedia and Teylers Museum (Haarlem, the Netherlands) to improve the content of articles related to Teylers Museum and its collections: Wikipedia:GLAM/Teylers/Multilingual_Challenge. The Physical Cabinet of Teylers Museum houses a collection of scientific instruments from the 18th and 19th centuries. These instruments were used for research as well as for public demonstrations. Among them is a very interesting collection by the acoustic instrument maker Rudolph Koenig. The entire collection is available online: museum website > Instrument Hall > choose format ' show all' > case VIII & IX: acoustics. You will also find the descriptive catalogue (full text searchable) on this website. For the Teylers Challenge we are still looking for people who'd be interested in writing / expanding articles on the instrument collection! The museum can supply pictures and sources. Popular pages tool update

As of January, the popular pages tool has moved from the Toolserver to Wikimedia Tool Labs. The code has changed significantly from the Toolserver version, but users should notice few differences. Please take a moment to look over your project's list for any anomalies, such as pages that you expect to see that are missing or pages that seem to have more views than expected. Note that unlike other tools, this tool aggregates all views from redirects, which means it will typically have higher numbers. (For January 2014 specifically, 35 hours of data is missing from the WMF data, which was approximated from other dates. For most articles, this should yield a more accurate number. However, a few articles, like ones featured on the Main Page, may be off).

Web tools, to replace the ones at tools:~alexz/pop, will become available over the next few weeks at toollabs:popularpages. All of the historical data (back to July 2009 for some projects) has been copied over. The tool to view historical data is currently partially available (assessment data and a few projects may not be available at the moment). The tool to add new projects to the bot's list is also available now (editing the configuration of current projects coming soon). Unlike the previous tool, all changes will be effective immediately. OAuth is used to authenticate users, allowing only regular users to make changes to prevent abuse. A visible history of configuration additions and changes is coming soon. Once tools become fully available, their toolserver versions will redirect to Labs.

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? Invitation to Wiki4YearOfSound2020 Campaign

Several organizations in acoustics designated 2020 as the International Year of Sound. It is a global initiative to highlight the importance of sound and related sciences and technologies for all in society. The International Year of Sound activities aim to stimulate the understanding throughout the world of the important role that sound plays in all aspects of our society. Contributions are welcome in subdisciplines including aeroacoustics, audio, signal processing, architectural acoustics, bioacoustics, electro-acoustics, environmental noise, musical acoustics, noise control, hearing and psychoacoustics, physical acoustics, speech, ultrasound, underwater sound and vibration.

For International Year of Sound 2020 (#IYS2020), the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, took the lead in designing the online event Wiki4YearOfSound2020, to facilitate the improvement of Wikipedia content related to acoustics, sound, human communication, music, noise its effects and control, and soundscapes.
