Philadelphia County Article merge

Their has been a effort by several users to merge Philadelphia County into the Philadelphia article, for the past several months i have been an effective one man army in trying to prevent this merger, the least of wich has been a massive expansion of the artile. I belive that a merger will do nothing but sigificantly dilute the information currently present in the article and confuse lay-persons in that their is and was a diffrence between the county and the city, rather then a passing mention of the merger. I also apply this dlution in makeup of Philadelphia County prior to the 1854 merger, ie the boroughs and townships. Expansion of the article might prove difficulte as resources on the web about the county are extremely limited. I for one plan on disputing any merge of the the two articles, though i will let memebrs come to their own conclusion. --Boothy443 | trácht ar 04:01, 28 October 2005 (UTC)

• I agree that Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania should be a distinct article from the Philadelphia article. At the time of the 1854 merger, Philadelphia County contained 6 of the 30 most populous cities in America[1]; surely it had some history under its belt by then.  :-) This raises another question, touching on the question of neighborhood article titles: say we standardize to "NeighborhoodName, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania", what about neighborhoods that descend from formerly independent municipalities, like Spring Garden or Kensington? Should their predecessors have articles at "NeighborhoodName, Pennsylvania", or merely redirects? --CComMack 10:13, 28 October 2005 (UTC)

• • Well if their is anyone that can add anything to the county article to make it stronger, it would be well apprecheated, the big argument is that the city and the county are completly conslidated which they are not, considering that i am a former resident of the city, much to my misfortunie, and filling out forms and having to put in Philadelphia County plus the research i have done, their is no such thing as the County and City of Philadelphia, a similar thing to Denver and San Francisco, nor is the City and Indpendent City, The city of Philadelphia is part of the County of Philadelphia, the just happen to have the same borders, and the city happens to manage the affairs within thos boundaries. • • • As for the hood names, i have tackled this on once already. First things is with pass over from 1854 to current, you have to identify which 1854 entinity corsponds to the current neighborhood, so far their are two wich are preety much exaxt, Manayunk Borough with the current Manayunk (so i have Manayunk Borough redirecting to Manayunk, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) and Northern Liberties District (not the township) with the current Northern Liberties (which i have in the same form as Manayunk). To be hnoest i perfer the NeighborhoodName, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania becuas it can fall into the City/Borough/Township, County, Pennsylvania format as well, and their are several that will have to fall into the format by default due to the use elswhere in the state or world. Philadelphia County Category merge

I believe that we should merge the city and county categories. Having a separate page on the history of the county is fine, but maintaining a separate CATEGORY is duplicative. Get rid of the Philadelphia County Category. **Wikipedia lists Philadelphia as a consolidated city-county. Any article that doesn't belong directly in the Philadelphia Category and is related to the County, probably belongs elsewhere (like Philaelphia History Category). evrik 05:39, 14 February 2006 (UTC)

Geographic Scope

What should the geographic scope of this project be? I wrote the project page specifying not only the city itself, but the Delaware Valley as well, which I left undefined. It seems obvious that we should hold ourselves within some county boundaries, but how many? Just one (Philadelphia)? Or five (add Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery)? Or eight (add Camden, Burlington, Gloucester)? Ten (add Salem, New Castle)? Eleven (add Mercer)?

Obviously, we could be really bloated/imperialistic about this if we so desired, but we should set limits now, even if we want to revisit them later. I favor the eight-county domain outlined above, but I realize some might want to hold to the Five (PA) Counties, or even stop at the city limits. As a longtime citizen of New Jersey (Cherry Hill, Haddon Twp, Collingswood, |Paulsboro, Westville, |Gloucester City), I resent your expansionistic aims. Not everything in South Jersey belongs in a Philadelphia WikiProject. You claimed the Latin Casino, which I grudgingly admit belongs, since it once actually was located in Philadelphia and then moved. But I would strongly oppose adding Garden State Park to your WikiProject. It's a New Jersey place, with New Jersey history, and Philadelphia had absolutely nothing to do with it. Neither would Atlantic City, New Jersey belong here; just because 90% of the billboards along the eastbound side of Ben Franklin Bridge advertise AC casinos does not mean AC is part of Philadelphia. --Rpresser 01:39, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

The St. Louis, Missouri article includes references to museums in Illinois, and to musicians such as Miles Davis who started their career in East St. Louis, Illinois. New Stub

Um, shouldn't this perhaps go through the process at WP:WSS first? I doubt there are actually many SEPTA stubs right now, and it isn't a great hardship to just double-tag them with {{Philadelphia-stub}} and {{US-rail-stub}} (or {{Metro-stub}}, or {{{{Bus-stub}}), or {{{{Tram-stub}}). --CComMack 06:09, 31 October 2005 (UTC)

Because WSS is a project, and projects do not set standards, a gulidline is no a standard, nor do they approve or should they approve or disapprove, if they do or did then that is creep, and moore on the way of everytnig needing proir apporval. secondly i find double tagging a unsitely and not effective, but i'll just go and delet it anyway. --Boothy443 | trácht ar 05:45, 1 November 2005 (UTC)

Vandalism Watch

Just an FYI, their have been several vandalism attacks at both the Burholme neighborhood article and at the article for Fox Chase Cancer Center (FCCC) by a group, though i suppose it is only one person from the ip addresses that have been given, that opposes the expansion of FCCC and the agrement that have made with the Farimount Park Commision. The vandalism is in the form of an pov attack agins both the FCCC the Park Commision and both of their members. Nearby Communities

The surrounding communities consist of: (i) incorporated municipalities such as cities, boros and townships (e.g., Media, Pennsylvania; and (ii) unincorporated areas such as neighborhoods, zip codes and so on (e.g., Wayne, Pennsylvania or Garrett Hill, Pennsylvania). What sort of information would be most helpful to have in these templates?

Proposed standards

I'd like to propose the following standards:

1. All neighborhood articles should be moved to [[Neighborhood Name, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania]], (for example, Manayunk, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) if they are not located there already.

But why? There is, so far as I am aware, only one place called Manayunk. I imagine the same could be said of at least some other neighborhoods. For those that are not unique, why the need for the ", Pennsylvania"? There is only one noteworthy city called Philadelphia, so why not just Center City, Philadelphia, and so forth. And do we have to have North Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania? Because that's just silly. john k 06:00, 8 November 2005 (UTC)

1. The station progression boxes at the bottom of SEPTA station articles should have the western station on the left, with "west" defined as "towards the PRR end" for Regional Rail lines, "towards Pattison" for the BSS, "towards 69th Street" for the MFSE, and "away from 69th Street" for Routes 100-102.

These seem like pretty straightforward affairs, so if there's no objection at the end of the week, I'll go ahead and start moving articles. --CComMack 05:42, 8 November 2005 (UTC)

WikiProjects (in general) don't hold Meetups, but at the recent (very successful) Wikipedia Meetup in Delaware, the idea of a Meetup in Philadelphia was pretty well-received. I would love for there to be one. --CComMack 20:54, 26 February 2006 (UTC)

A whole bunch of new Philly photos

As I hinted last week, I uploaded a whole bunch of images of Philadelphia and related topics. I got a most of the ideas from Wikipedia:Requested pictures and went out with my camera to satisfy them, plus I took a peek through my photo library and found a few others that might be useful.

There were too many to put on this page, including Center City, Boathouse Row, UPenn, and others, so see User:JVinocur/Images for the list.

Frank Rizzo

Hi, I grew up in Philly during the 1970s, so I thought I would take a stab at rewriting the Frank Rizzo article. It turned out to be a little longer than I thought, so I wanted to have other editors look at it. Because there a lot of changes and a POV check template on the article now, I put it on a subpage (Frank Rizzo/rewrite) rather than on the main article page. There aren't many quotes in the article, I was thinking of creating a Frank Rizzo Wikiquote page and linking to it from the article. I put this message on the Frank Rizzo talk page as well. • South Philly, its great you are trying to revive the Philly wikiproject, but you are not following the descriptions on the rating template. For example you rated Philadelphia Inquirer a Good Article, but that is only for articles deemed Good Articles in the same way a Featured Article is decided. Portal template

Hi. I realize you guys are trying to draw attention to Portal:Philadelphia, but I'm afraid that the portal template has been applied to far too many articles. A discussion this spring at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Portals came to the consensus that the template should only be applied to a handful of articles and categories. Currently, it's in use on over 300 Philadelphia-related articles. Please trim its usage at your earliest convenience. Thank you. - EurekaLott 02:22, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

• Pretzel? You are making large generalizations based on one or two articles. Whether or not pretzel should have the portal is a different argument than what articles should have a portal link. If someone doesn't like that pretzel has the portal, bring it up on the talk page - don't try to create a policy covering all portals. Sports in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Per discussion on Talk:Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, we should start a Sports in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania article so that most of the 'Sports' section from the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania article can be moved there. I would suggest having the new Sports article have subsections for (1) the big four professional sports teams, (2) college sports in Philadelphia, (3) other professional sports in Philadelphia (Wings, Kixx, Phantoms and so on), (4) annual spectator (i.e., other-than-participatory) sporting events associated with Philly such as the Penn Relays, Dad Vail Regatta, Army-Navy Game, Philadelphia International Championship (bike race), and so on, and (5) participatory and recreational sports activities (such as the Broad Street Run, crew clubs, and so on. SEPTA Article Name Standardization

On the to do list, it satates that one of the objectves is "Create SEPTA station/route article title standards." If no one minds, I have a few ideas bouncing around in my head, and I would like to get the ball rolling on establishing SEPTA article and route conventions.-- danntm ^T _C 14:59, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

• Oh, of course, that's why I brought it here to discuss and form a consensus. The general outline of my ideas follows largely from existing convention: SEPTA Regional Rail stations follow the form "Station Name (SEPTA station)", Broad Street Line stations follow the form "Station Name (BSL station)", and Norristown High Speed Line stops "Station Name (NHSL station)." The MFL stations are a bit more complicated, because they are currently devided between "Station name", "Station Name (SEPTA station)" and "Station Name (MFL station)." I favor resovling the MFL naming convention to "Station Name (MFL station)," to maintain consistency with the BSL and to avoid conflicts with BSL or Regional Rail stations. If that was not complicated enough, the major transportation centers (e.g. 69th Street Terminal, Frankford Transportation Center, Fern Rock Transportation Center, Suburban Station (Philadelphia), 30th Street Station (Philadelphia), Market East Station (Philadelphia)) would not have the line-specific disambiguating parentheticals, especially considering each of these transportation centers are served by multiple services.-- danntm ^T _C 16:04, 16 August 2006 (UTC)
• Oh, I almost forgot, the Broad-Ridge Spur follows the form "Station Name (BRS station)", otherwise there would be a conflict between the defunct Spring Garden (BRS station) and the Spring Garden station on the BSL mainline. • I just realized that this proposal does not cover the Subway-Surface Lines, which currently uses the form "Station Name (SEPTA station)." A form more consistent with the other lines would be "Station Name (Subway-Surface Station)." Of course, becase 15th Street is both a SSL and MFL station, it probably should remain at (SEPTA station).   • City Hall station only serves one line and that is the Broad Street Line, not to be confused with the 15th St Station which connects to it, serving MFL and SSL. Therefore, I renamed it to City Hall (BSL station).

It's already on the North Philadelphia template, so you should probably start a discussion first, but the Northeast one is at Template:NEPhila. This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. When to use Neighborhood templates...

As a new participant in the WikiProject Philadelphia, I'm trying to update philadelphia related pages. But I'm a bit confused as to when we should be using the Neighborhood templates. Do we use them on landmarks and parks that are within a neighborhood? For example, Franklin Square, Rittenhouse Square and Independance mall are all in Center City, would I then use the CCPhila template? Or is the template reserved for neighborhood descriptions? --Coplan 22:05, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

• I was just sticking the neighborhood templates at the bottom of pages where the article pertains to certain areas. For example, an article about Rittenhouse Square or Independance Mall would benefit from the CCPhila template. If they aren't to be used for this purpose, then I will clean these out. Philadelphia Anti-Graffiti Network

The Mural Arts Program hasn't been a part of the Anti Graffit network since 1996. They should still be seperate, or the very least NAP should not be listed under divisons. The article was definitely not a stub when it was rated. Medvedenko 19:07, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

From what I read on the Philadelphia.Gov website PAGN became a larger program with Mural Arts under it, though not administratively. IF you goto the Philadelphia anti graffiti website it defines the PAGNetwork as having 3 sub parts, one of those is Mural Arts Program, however I have read the news reports and the MAP program that states they were given their own budgets etc. Its also interesting to note that both Graffiti Abatement Team and Mural Arts Project get to take kids that were caught vandalizing property and use them for programs. So if MAP is seperate or PAGN just became an umbrella term or umbrella program I am not sure. The PAGN was famous throughout the country so it would be odd for it to be dissolved wholesale. Geotagging and Google Earth: an end-of-year collaboration

If you check out the new version of Google Earth, you'll find a new layer called "Geographic Web", which includes a layer of placemarks culled from geodata in Wikipedia articles. It's very nifty; check it out when you get the chance. However, it points out a huge gap in out current coverage here at WikiProject Philadelphia (and, indeed, throughout Wikipedia); not nearly as many of our articles are geotagged as could be. So, I propose that we have a mass collaboration, starting now and running through the end of the year, to geotag as many Philly-related articles as we can. If everyone tags about five currently untagged articles every editing day between now and December 31... well, not to be clichéd about it, but that adds up to a lot. To add geodata to an article, use {{coor title d}} (for most locations), {{Geolinks-US-buildingscale}} (for landmarks large enough to be distinctive from the air), or {{Geolinks-US-hoodscale}} (for neighborhoods and compact suburban towns); for more options, see Category:Coordinates templates, but those three should suffice for most purposes.

Someone marked up the Roosevelt Mall article with a proposal that it be deleted. I think it's noteworthy enough to be an encyclopedia article, and if anyone in this wikiproject has an opinion on the matter, I would suggest leaving a comment on the talk page there. Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Criminal Justice/Law Enforcement in Philadelphia

Working in the law enforcement field in Philadelphia, I've got a boatload of good ideas, a good amount of free time, and a Nikon D50. I wrote the First Judicial District of Pennsylvania article, but I'm trying to expand that as much as possible with sources and some relevant numbers. Now that I finally got the D50, I've already uploaded a bunch of photos for unrelated topics. I was hoping there is a some sort of request/to-do list for photos in Philadelphia. This Wednesday, ironically, I have Jury Duty and will use some of my free time to take pictures of the CJC (needs an article I think), some famous statues, etc. Anything else that comes to mind that's in Center City/Northeast Philly?

Geolinks discussion affects guideline

The project suggests using a Geolinks template in the "External links" section. The Geolinks templates may be superseded by recent changes in the coord template which provide a list of mapping services when the geographical coordinate is clicked on. Please participate in the discussion at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Geographical_coordinates#Geolinks-coord_Issues and consider changes to your guideline. Help needed for licensing rights of SEPTA map

I've posted a map of the Southeastern_Pennsylvania_Transportation_Authority system on its page, and I don't know what to say about its copyright status - it's supposed to be deleted within a week. I got it from http://www.cc.gatech.edu/~srini/courses/cs1322/class14/septa.jpg, but the source of the map is SEPTA itself, copyright 1998. I've seen variations of this map many times before, including previously on the SEPTA Wikipedia page. You should probably let the image be deleted. The image is copyrighted (by SEPTA) and copyrighted material can only be used as Fair Use. However, Fair Use is only acceptable when a free alternative can not be obtained, and since this is a map it can be recreated by an user in a graphics program and uploaded up here with a free license. This has been done with other transits systems, such as the London Underground and the Manila Light Rail Transit System. Medvedenko 02:23, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

Turtle Rock Lighthouse

Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

• The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
• The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
• A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Strawberry Mansion, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

The article on the Strawberry Mansion Area is vital in telling the Philadelphia story. It clearly showed the numerous migrations of the wealthy and affluent from neighborhoods when Blacks were permitted to move into the communities. Although intergration was preached and established by law the many diverse cultures that inhabited Philadelphia overtly displayed the desire to operate with sepratist mentalities, making segragation an unspoken priority of northern life.

I was raised in the neighborhood during very turbulent times. I recall the stings life could lay upon impoverished and disenfranchised individuals. I remember reading the Philadelphia Daily News and the stories portraying the carnage and despair of living in what amounted to war zones. Yet, despite the times, the heart of the people yearned for better futures for their off-spring. In the midst of all that was portrayed in negative light, rays of hope shone through making the despair of darkness flee.

It was a neighborhood sadly like so many others across America but the people from many generations have risen above their plight. Adversity consumed some but it also made many stronger and in that process the city stronger. Among the prominent people of Philadelphia stand some from that once riches to rags neighborhood. They do not stand in a class by themselves but I am certain that when the roll is eventually called it will be a very short hail. Speak to those who live there and those who have managed to overcome to get a better perspective of the neighborhood, it's rich past and promising future.

Yes, Happy Birthday! However, reading the Philadelphia article, no one would know that we celebrate here, nor would they learn more at Independence Day (United States). I am sure there is plenty more to say, and WikiProject Philadelphia members can do it. I will check into articles on the Centennial celebration, the Bicentennial, and I know there was a celebration for 150 years, too, but maybe there is no article. Hi, I lived there as a child in the 50's we left in 63 when the redevelopment authority took our house. The lot where it stood at 74th and Chelwynde is vacant to this day. Your research and observations are on target. Yes it was a fully integrated neighborhood and we all lived as neighbors right down to the guy who hauled scrap for a living. It really was a shame. It would be great to find some pictures of the area. We had a farm market and even had a person who delivered eggs to our door. It was a quiet place and there were many marshy areas where we played with tadpoles and turtles. Most of that was filled in and houses built on it. Thank you for doing this research. Request

I have an unusual request. I want a copy of Thomas Eakins' portrait of Dr. Charles Lester Leonard for use in the List of works by Thomas Eakins article (#296). According to this (page 4), it is currently hanging in Dr. Stanley Baum's office in radiology department at in the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center. Louis H. Carpenter

New Pennsylvania government stubs

On Wikipedia:Village pump (miscellaneous)#Municipal authorities/special district governments there is a proposal to add a great many (1,700, more or less) new Pennsylvania government stubs with a bot. A decision was reached to create lists of municipal authorities in each county, rather than a flood of stub articles. To see the various county lists, see Category:Municipal authorities in Pennsylvania and to see the Philadelphia list, see List of municipal authorities in Philadelphia. Anyone interested in Philadelphia government should look at the list and create articles for red links, especially for those agencies with an official web site, which makes starting the article easier. Please do not do any copyright violations by copying information directly, and try to find other reliable sources beyond the official web site of the agency.

Template double tagging

I am concerned that {{WikiProject Philadelphia}} automatically tags Philadelphia-related articles for the WikiProject Pennsylvania. There are lots of examples, including Camden, New Jersey, where the page is appropriate for the WP:PHILLY, but not for the WP:PENNSYLVANIA. I think the template should be altered to either remove the automatic WP:PENNA command or to add a Pennsylvania = yes parameter.--Blargh29 (talk) 15:39, 19 December 2009 (UTC)

I agree. I have removed Pennsylvania and sometimes Philadelphia templates from South Jersey articles, so more Pennsylvania additions are not a good thing. Who can make this change? --DThomsen8 (talk) 15:53, 19 December 2009 (UTC)

Article tagging and autoassessing bot

I will soon place a bot request that will add the {{WikiProject Philadelphia}} tag to articles within this list of Philadelphia-related categories: User:Blargh29/Subcats of Category:Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (I have already undertaken a similar effort at WP:PENNA.) I need a few project members to look through that list for categories that are not Philadelphia-related. That would be #Article tagging and autoassessing bot... Note that the bot can be programmed to set the importance automatically, if you separate User:Blargh29/Subcats_of_Category:Philadelphia,_Pennsylvania into "default low" "default mid" "default high" importance sections. Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons

The WikiProject Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons (UBLPs) aims to reduce the number of unreferenced biographical articles to under 30,000 by June 1, primarily by enabling WikiProjects to easily identify UBLP articles in their project's scope. There were over 52,000 unreferenced BLPs in January 2010 and this has been reduced to 32,665 as of May 16. A bot is now running daily to compile a list of all articles that are in both Category:All unreferenced BLPs and have been tagged by a WikiProject. Note that the bot does NOT place unreferenced tags or assign articles to projects - this has been done by others previously - it just compiles a list.

Your Project's list can be found at Wikipedia:WikiProject Philadelphia/Unreferenced BLPs. As of May 17 you have approximately 50 articles to be referenced, a 10.7% reduction from last week. A Philadelphia cemetery, but which?

Commons:File:Soldier's home "mustered out," Philadelphia, from Robert N. Dennis collection of stereoscopic views.jpg was part of a collection of c. 1860s stereo cards of Philadelphia cemeteries. Unlike the others, it doesn't name the cemetery clearly. If someone can add that information to the description of this (and to Commons:File:Soldier's home "mustered out," Philadelphia, from Robert N. Dennis collection of stereoscopic views.png, another format for the same image) it would be helpful. Title suggests it might have been the cemetery of a "soldiers' home", but that's still pretty vague unless someone can specifically identify the institution. - Jmabel | Talk 04:40, 14 September 2010 (UTC)

Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

US Collaboration reactivated & Portal:United States starting next

Casliber recently posted a suggestion on the talk page for WikiProject United States about getting the US Wikipedians Collaboration page going again in an effort to build up articles for GA through FA class. See Wikipedia:U.S. Wikipedians' notice board/USCOTM. After several days of work from him the page is up and ready for action. A few candidates have already been added for you to vote on or you can submit one using the directions provided. If you are looking for inspiration here is a link to the most commonly viewed articles currently under the scope of Wikiproject United States. There are tons of good articles in the various US related projects as well so feel free to submit any article relating to US topics (not just those under the scope of WPUS). This noticeboard is intended for ‘’’All’’’ editors working on US subjects, not just those under WPUS.

The next item I intend to start updating is Portal:United States if anyone is interested in helping. Again this is not specific to WPUS and any help would be greatly appreciated to maximize visibility of US topics. The foundation has already been established its just a matter of updating the content with some new images, biographies and articles. The ESS conference is at the Sheraton Society Hill, 1 Dock Street, near 2nd and Walnut Streets, February 24-27, 2011. If Philadelphia Wikipedians are to do a meetup, we need a place with WiFi and food, and a meeting room if there are enough of us, and we need to agree on the exact date and time. February 25th is Friday, we could meet that evening, or sometime over the weekend. What do others suggest? Declaration of independence

There is presently a debate over whether the list article Declaration of independence ought to include a hatnote pointing specifically to the United States Declaration of Independence. Those in favor argue that historical, demographic, and practical factors justify this treatment, while those in opposition argue that no country's document should receive special treatment under any circumstances. I am bringing the discussion to your attention because United States Declaration of Independence is included in this wikiproject. Please see here if you are interested in weighing in on the matter. Wikinic

We should all get together at a Wikinic on Saturday June 25, 2011 (rain date Sunday June 26) somewhere in Fairmount Park. I'd hope that this can be fairly informal, enjoying byo picnic lunches and the company of fellow Wikipedians. If anybody wants a bit more substance perhaps we could take an excursion to some of the historic houses (map) in the park or maybe even the Please Touch Museum and gather some info or photos for an article or two. There might be some substantive discussion on next year's Wikimania in Washington DC, or on the possibility of getting a WALRUS organization in Philly. But I hope none of these activities would get in the way of just having an enjoyable picnic in the park.

Please join us next weekend for GLAM Baltimore 2011 --- a series of two events organized by Baltimore Heritage on July 22-23 to build relationships between cultural heritage organizations, archives and museums and the Wikipedian community in Baltimore and Maryland. We'll start on Friday, July 22 with a happy hour at the Midtown Yacht Club in Baltimore's historic Mount Vernon neighborhoods. On the morning of Saturday, July 23, we'll meet at the Walters Art Museum for an introduction to GLAM Wiki partnerships around the country and break out into smaller groups to develop new ideas for projects. I know this is a bit of a distance but we'd welcome any Philadelphia Wikipedians or GLAM folks that like to come down and join us.

For those interested in public art, there is now the above article. Feel free to add photos and references, check coordinates, etc. You can even add artworks, though personally, I don't add artworks unless it is something special or can be photographed (e.g. pre-1923) - there are 700-1700 public artworks in Philly depending on how you count. Hi! I notice that the Philly school district put up zoning maps that indicate what areas are zoned to which schools. The problem is, they are under https, so web.archive.org will not archive them (trying to make the URL an "http" breaks the link - the page will only load if it is https)

Life in Philadelphia

I want help with a page I started about a cartoon from the late 1920's called Life in Philadelphia. The series was drawn by E.W. Clay and depicts Philadelphians(mostly free black men and women) in a satiric way. Likely 2003, see File:StudioEIS NCC 9981.jpg, StudioEIS and StudioEIS.com. On the photo is an OTRS release, but something is a bit askew, e.g. the (c) on the photos in our article. If you can get confirmation that the OTRS release would apply (which I very much doubt) give me a month or two and I'll get the photo. What are the main Spanish speaking areas of Philly? http://libwww.freelibrary.org/branches/branch.cfm?loc=LEH suggests that it is these areas: "Central North Philadelphia, Fairhill, St. Edwards/Hartranft, and West Kensington" - Any others?

In the last decade, hispanics have also moved into the Italian market area (south of Washington Blvd), and I've seen postings about events across the river in South Jersey recently. For a long time, Philly had either a small or inactive hispanic community relative to the NY and DC and I think even Baltimore metro areas.Jweaver28 (talk) 19:04, 30 December 2012 (UTC)

Map for Garden Court

Garden Court, Philadelphia has a US Historic Place infobox – great!

In that infobox is a map of Pennsylvania, with a pin for Philadelphia – fine for a US Historic Place, but not very useful for a location in Philly.

How about a map of Philadelphia showing the location of Garden Court?

The question has come up before in different guises for NRHP sites, perhaps for Waterloo, Iowa. Somebody in Waterloo said that the maps of Iowa with a pin for Waterloo wasn't very useful for folks who live in Iowa. Nevertheless, you gotta realize that not everybody knows where Waterloo, IA is and only a very few of our readers would ever benefit from having a street map of Waterloo. Same thing might go for Philly. A couple of issues:

• You can get a Google street map easily enough just by clicking on the coordinates
• The French Wikipedia has a "double map" system, where it shows the national map, but if you click on it it shows the local map. Given the coords to Google map, is this worth the effort?
• Philly is not, of course, Waterloo, Iowa. Maybe enough people know where it is that they don't need a PA map, and could use a local map.

Alphabetization in participant list

• @Dthomsen8: I noticed that Dthomsen8 had a ~~~~-type dated signature in the list in the position for "Thomsen" -- it happened to be just below the entry I was inserting for myself. When I saw a proper listing, properly set among the D's, I removed the misplaced signature.
• @Thunderball15: Similarly, I deleted Thunderball15's signature at the foot of the section, after the table and with a piped other name, and redundant to the correctly placed entry. Unlike Dthomsen8, Thunderball15 is redlinked: no user page, though there is a talk page, indicating activity by this user in June 2011‎ but not since.

Inner-Ring Suburbs of Philadelphia

Hi WP Philadelphia, I'm in a sort of an disagreement with another Wiki user, and I need a third party opinion to get something straight. As I understand it, a inner-ring suburb is a place that is outside a city, that often forms a border with the city, and had their population established before the postwar boom. So based off this information, the following in my mind would be considered the inner ring suburbs of Philadelphia:

• Cheltenham Township
• Haverford Township
• Lower Merion Township
• Upper Darby Township

Places like Bensalem, Abington, and Norristown don't border the city or had their population explosion postwar.

So I guess my question is:

• What exactly is an inner ring suburb?
• And based off that, what are the TRUE inner-ring suburbs of Philadelphia?

Photographing every municipality in Pennsylvania

Several of us are engaged in a project to make sure that every municipality in the state has a photo in its article. That's one photo for every city, borough, town, and township. We'll probably leave census-designated places and unincorporated communities for next year.

There are 2562 municipalities in the state, which is likely the largest for any US state. So far we have about 1,869 of them photographed, with about 700 left to go. You can see what photos are needed, divided by county at User:Nyttend/Pennsylvania

You can also see the entire list at List of municipalities in Pennsylvania. Please take photos and upload them, first to the article for the municipality and then to the list article. We'd like to be finished with this project by July 4th, 2015.

What should you take photos of?

If you live in the area, you probably know better than we do what's the most important or most beautiful part of the municipality. But just in case you need a few ideas, try these subjects.

• the town hall
• railroad station
• fire station or police station
• a building on the National Register of Historic Places
• a school or library
• a bridge
• a church
• a park, perhaps with a Civil War monument
• the corner of State and Main Streets
• other street scenes, including residential areas and rural areas
• the most beautiful building in town
• the tallest building in town

When uploading the files to Commons, please include a category for the name of the municipality, or if no such category exists, the name of the county.

There is a "watchlist banner" running during June for all registered editors with a PA located IP. Even before the banner started running we had about 5 photographers working on this already: 1 in Western, PA, about 3 in SE PA, and 1 in NE PA. It looks like we need some folks in Western and Central PA!

Keep an eye out

We've had two incidents now (Avenue of the Arts, Philadelphia and Elfreth's Alley) where an IP hopper has tried to delete an entire article on flimsy grounds, without discussion, and accompanied in one case by edit-warring. I would suggest that members of this project add as many Philadelphia-based articles to their watchlists as possible and keep an eye out for further disruption. Good luck. I'm setting up a list to watch, myself, but I'm getting a weird problem. I'm using the mobile beta front end, which may or may not have something to do with it. When I look at the watchlist it says, for example, "last modified five days ago". But then, when I go to the edit history, the most recent edit is five months or a year ago. The Black Banana in Philadelphia

Black Banana needs help. It was a very popular nightclub, especially for the gay scene, from the 70's to 90's. It closed in 1998. The article is currently unsourced, but I found one article [6] that I put under External links for right now. I can't find any other mainstream news articles from searches. @Thnidu: The two Facebook links don't work, but even if they did, they can't be sources. The G Philly (Philadelphia Magazine) is listed under External links. It's the only source I found, and I looked. Youtubes could be external links, but not sources. T-shirt, no. Joonbug, 404's. The shortened links really do no good to post. But I'd seen the citypaper link. Need more. Forum thread might be interesting, but not a source. Again, post the full link. The baseball book can be used. But it's meager. List of parks

I thought it would be useful for us to have a complete list of the city's parks, whether adding it to WP or not: at least it would be useful for seeing what articles we might want to add. I just investigated the two "Pennypack" entries and found a link describing the relation between them. I've started a subpage, User:Thnidu/Philadelphia parks/Pennypack,* with just that link. I think this is the pattern I'll follow. Everyone is welcome to continue this. Well! It turns out that we already have an article on the park system as a whole, including a (complete?) list, but it's cunningly hidden under the name Fairmount Park, which is also the official name of the whole park system. W. Nelson Francis

Much to my surprise, I just now happened on "W. Nelson Francis" via the Random Article button and have added it to Category:People from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I was surprised because his name is quite well known in my field, linguistics, as one of the two creators of the Brown Corpus. IP editors are erasing neighborhoods

A bunch of recent IP edits have been made, all working toward removing Center City neighborhoods, including Logan Square and Fitler Square, and adding the regional descriptions Center City East and Center City West.

This seems wrong to me. I'd prefer hearing other people's opinions before reverting much of the changes. (Though I did put Logan Square back.)

Am I the only one who thinks Rittenhouse Square is a neighborhood, and not just a square? TypoBoy (talk) 18:19, 8 January 2016 (UTC)

Whoever is making these changes is working pretty hard. They have moved the "Penn Center, Philadelphia" article to "Center City West, Philadelphia". The Rittenhouse Square article now asserts that it's in the "Rit-Fit" neighborhood. Various spellings of "Rit-Fit" now redirect to that former Penn Center article. Last year there was a similar effort to redirect Philadelphia streets to neigborhood or SEPTA station articles. I suggest that anyone mentioning a particular address to use brackets so the links are easily followed. I've lived in Philadelphia for 15 years, and I've never heard such names as "Center City West" -- that expression, to me, would refer to a much larger region extending north and south -- or (ugh!) • I would agree that the changes being made to the neighborhood names are not appropriate. I live in Philadelphia, and have never heard "Rit-Fit" used; nor does it tend to appear in publications or online references. I did find it on the following webpage, which purports to list nicknames for Philadelphia neighborhoods: Nicknames (It might worth seeing if other names mentioned in the list are also being changed.) I would certainly support "Penn Center": a quick google search indicates that name is commonly and consistently used in books from 1952 to 2014, including publications by the Philadelphia City Planning Commission. "Center city West" seems to get some use on realtor's websites, but I only found one mention in a google book search, in 2012's Explorer's Guide Eastern Pennsylvania by Laura Randall. A main object of these IP editors seems to be to invent the neighborhoods of Center City West and Center City East, and have them occupy (in both geography and mind-share) the spaces roughly occupied by Penn Center and Market East, respectively. I have undone most of the changes relating to Penn Center. Market East is still AWOL. TypoBoy (talk) 16:31, 10 January 2016 (UTC)

What I find puzzling is that these editors, whoever they are, are doing real work along with their quirky revisionism. For instance, they created a separate template for Center City neighborhoods to replace the big "communities of Philadelphia" template. Come to think of it, that isn't necessarily desirable. But it did require work.

These seem like the actions of a strongly motivated group of editors who know a lot about Wikipedia, if not so much about Philadelphia, and have been given the task of promoting Center City, or some aspect of it.

I intend to include a link to this discussion in the edit summary of any changes I make while cleaning up after these folks. I encourage others to do the same. TypoBoy (talk) 15:40, 11 January 2016 (UTC)

Playing fast and loose with neighborhood boundaries

The lead paragraph of the Fairmount article formerly (and, I think, accurately) said that the neighborhood is in lower North Philadelphia. For some months it has said instead that Fairmount is in "Greater Center City". There are some problems with this:

• It's inconsistent with the "Municipalities and Communities of Philadelphia" template"
• Wikipedia does not otherwise recognize the existence of "Greater Center City".
• There's no such thing as "Greater Center City". It's a region chosen arbitrarily for study by the Center City District, not an actual community.

I argued on the Fairmount talk page that the description of the geography should be changed back. The only response was from the editor who had introduced the change, who thought, unsurprisingly, that it's an improvement.

I continue to believe that geographical descriptions of Philadelphia neighborhoods should be consistent between articles and should correspond to the most common usage outside Wikipedia. I feel like a voice crying in the wilderness. TypoBoy (talk) 15:15, 22 May 2016 (UTC)

Annenberg School history

Hello Wikipedia editors! I proposed updates to add a History section to Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania, giving readers historical background on the school. What counts as a "community" for the Philadelphia County template?

Template:Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania was recently edited to add two new places, Parkland and Industrial. Two new articles, Parkland, Philadelphia and Industrial, Philadelphia, have been created for them. Philly.com's "Data Hub", which tracks statistics, including crime statistics, by location, was cited as a reference, because it has pages for Parkland and Industrial.

My view is that the Data Hub is using the words "industrial" and "parkland" in their usual sense, and not as proper-noun place names. The site is designed to consider every point in the city as part of an area, and it must use a name for each area. Most of the areas share the borders and the names of Philadelphia communities, such as Roxborough and Torresdale. For these two chunks of left-over Philadelphia geography, the Data Hub uses descriptive terms, because there weren't place names but their system required names. In my view, it does not follow that Wikipedia should claim that these are place names.

Am I off base here? I've certainly never heard somebody say, "I'm going to drive to Industrial today". Is there such a place? TypoBoy (talk) 16:45, 14 March 2018 (UTC)

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Photo needed from the Parkway Central Library

Hello Philadelphians. I'm working on an article about a raven in the Parkway Central Library. Grip belonged to Charles Dickens and is on display in the rare book department. I'm told that photos can be taken, but she is behind two layers of glass, so getting a good photo might be difficult. I'm not in the area, so if anyone would be so kind as to make the trip and take a photo, I'd appreciate it very much. Please let me know if you are able to upload it to Commons. Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present.
