Bristol Rovers F.C. is a GA edit

Hi, Saw your announcement, It's not a particular interest of mine but you may be interested to know Bristol Rovers F.C. is already a GA if you want to tag it.— Rod talk 11:33, 30 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Cardiff City F.C. edit

Should Cardiff City F.C. be included in this task force. They're Welsh, but play in an English league. And also other Welsh clubs e.g. Swansea City A.F.C. and Wrexham A.F.C. I'd include them. What do you guys think? Mattythewhite 08:52, 1 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

I would say yes, as they are involved in the English football league. Hopefully fans of these clubs will understand why there are covered by the England task force! Dave101talk  14:47, 6 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Navigation box templates for all Championship clubs edit

I went ahead and created navigation box templates for all of this season's Championship clubs that didn't have them. Some are a bit skimpy as I only used information readily available in the club's article or category. I used the Hull City template as a basis as it was fairly well fleshed out. I didn't modify existing templates except QPR's (changed colour to a shade of blue closer to the club's own) and Wolves' (changed from orange to gold), and spell out "Football Club" in the title bar for those clubs that had it abbreviated.

I also grouped all football templates for each club like this (Except Cardiff's, which wasn't set up to use the start and end templates):

{{fb start}}
{{Club Navbox Template}}
{{Original Football League clubs}} (if applicable)
{{English football league system cells | level = 2 | promotion = [[FA Premier League]] | relegation = [[Football League One]]}}
{{Football in England table cells}}
{{fb end}}

Below is Hull City's as an example:

So all Championship club football templates are in a standardised format now. I don't mean this to be the final word by any means; if anybody wants to expand a new navbox, please feel free. Doonhamer 02:28, 21 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Tony Pulis edit

Can someone take a look at the recent additions to this article. They are a lot more toned down than they were, but I'm still not sure they are NPOV. I've been sworn at for my efforts so will leave it alone. Regan123 (talk) 08:40, 26 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

I've reverted the last couple of edits. Completely POV. Peanut4 (talk) 12:24, 26 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for stepping in. A third party opinion is always good in these cases. Regan123 19:19, 30 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

FA cup seasons edit

Hello everyone! I'm new to the taskforce, but have been working on creating FA cup season pages. Do we have any guidelines for style? Also, I have noticed that the template shows pages linked to other wiki pages, but also to the FA cup website. Should we standardize this? Trjumpet (talk) 16:27, 20 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Just noticed (and reverted) the template, messy messy messy! Linking a load of red link years to one page on the FA site, not recommended. can't help you for Season guidelines sorry, I'm sure there's some club ones, don't know about competitions though. Paulbrock (talk) 03:14, 21 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Our own ratings? edit

I was wondering if task forces such as ours should have a separate importance rating for each article? At the moment the importance rating is given for "football" in general, and cascaded down to the task forces, sometimes in a way that is misleading IMO. For instance Thierry Henry appears in Category:High-importance football in Italy articles: from this category it would appear that he has therefore made a great contribution to Italian football, but in fact he only played a few games for Juventus. He appears in this category because he is important to football in general, and task forces don't have a separate rating system. Would it be possible/desirable to get our own importance ratings? --Jameboy (talk) 23:56, 22 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme edit

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. This scheme should allow the team to start producing offline selections for your project and the wider community within the next year. Thanks for using the Wikipedia 1.0 scheme! For the 1.0 Editorial Team, §hepBot (Disable) 21:52, 4 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Featured/Good content section getting quite large edit

Our Featured/Good content section is now getting quite large. I propose that we take this opportunity to re-vamp it (I think there are also probably a few articles missing), and I suggest that we use the same format as at Wikipedia:FOOTY#Showcase, with the show/hide boxes. Having the same format as the main project will make ours much easier to maintain. We won't have it split out into Players, Clubs and Stadia etc. but I think it's worth sacrificing that for ease of updating. If there are no objections within the next seven days I will go ahead and make the changes. --Jameboy (talk) 20:55, 18 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

I'm not a big fan of the Wikipedia:FOOTY#Showcase section. If we are trying to showcase these sections, why are they hidden? I would prefer a section similar to either WP:FA or WP:GA. Peanut4 (talk) 21:43, 18 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
Good point, I hadn't thought about it like that. In that case I'll concentrate on just getting it updated for now we can continue to mull over how (if at all) the format could be improved. --Jameboy (talk) 12:06, 19 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
Incidentally, by my reckoning the task force now has more than 150 pieces of good or featured content, so well done to everyone who has been involved in making English football articles better and long may it continue... --Jameboy (talk) 15:44, 11 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Club status edit

Hi lads!
I'm from Project Football at ru-wiki. We try to work up Footballers' Notability criteria but there's a problem we can't resolve — may I ask for your help?
The idea is to regard a person as 'significant' enough if he (or she) have been played for pros in one league game. But how can we find out what is the status of the club the person played for (are they professional, semi-pros or amateur)? Is it correct to define League Two as division at pro level? What about old Division Three/Four? Are there any 'mixed' divisions in England where professional clubs and part-timers play together? Thank you! --Ingumsky (talk) 08:17, 10 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

A quick answer is that League Two and the old Division Three and before that Division Four are and were professional levels. The current Conference National division is a mix of professional and some semi-pro teams. However, you may be find it easier to ask at WP:FOOTY to get more input from other editors. Peanut4 (talk) 18:21, 10 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
Gracias mate! --Ingumsky (talk) 20:18, 10 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia 0.7 articles have been selected for Football in England edit

Wikipedia 0.7 is a collection of English Wikipedia articles due to be released on DVD, and available for free download, later this year. The Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team has made an automated selection of articles for Version 0.7.

We would like to ask you to review the articles selected from this project. These were chosen from the articles with this project's talk page tag, based on the rated importance and quality. If there are any specific articles that should be removed, please let us know at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.7. You can also nominate additional articles for release, following the procedure at Wikipedia:Release Version Nominations.

A list of selected articles with cleanup tags, sorted by project, is available. The list is automatically updated each hour when it is loaded. Please try to fix any urgent problems in the selected articles. A team of copyeditors has agreed to help with copyediting requests, although you should try to fix simple issues on your own if possible.

We would also appreciate your help in identifying the version of each article that you think we should use, to help avoid vandalism or POV issues. These versions can be recorded at this project's subpage of User:SelectionBot/0.7. We are planning to release the selection for the holiday season, so we ask you to select the revisions before October 20. At that time, we will use an automatic process to identify which version of each article to release, if no version has been manually selected. Thanks! For the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial team, SelectionBot 23:14, 15 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Scope edit

"Players and managers that are English, or have played for an English club." Should we tag non-English players that were contracted to an English club (either permanently or on loan) but never made an appearance? --Jameboy (talk) 22:50, 14 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

I would say so. Just. Mainly because he has played a part in English football. Peanut4 (talk) 22:52, 14 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
I guess also because an English football "expert" would be able to add something to the article, even if only that the player signed, played no games and went on his way. --Jameboy (talk) 23:22, 14 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Seems reasonable. DeMoN2009 10:12, 15 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Also, we aren't talking about an article existing or not, as in WP:FOOTY notability. An article already exists, so we may be able to add to it. Seems conclusive then. --Jameboy (talk) 13:16, 15 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.

If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Wikipedia:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts". Questions and feedback should be left at Wikipedia talk:Article alerts.

Message sent by User:Addbot to all active wiki projects per request, Comments on the message and bot are welcome here.

Thanks. — Headbomb {ταλκκοντριβς – WP Physics} 09:09, 15 March, 2009 (UTC)

WP 1.0 bot announcement edit

This message is being sent to each WikiProject that participates in the WP 1.0 assessment system. On Saturday, January 23, 2010, the WP 1.0 bot will be upgraded. Your project does not need to take any action, but the appearance of your project's summary table will change. The upgrade will make many new, optional features available to all WikiProjects. Additional information is available at the WP 1.0 project homepage. — Carl (CBM · talk) 03:19, 22 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Pageview stats edit

After a recent request, I added WikiProject Football/England task force to the list of projects to compile monthly pageview stats for. The data is the same used by http://stats.grok.se/en/ but the program is different, and includes the aggregate views from all redirects to each page. The stats are at Wikipedia:WikiProject Football/England task force/Popular pages.

The page will be updated monthly with new data. The edits aren't marked as bot edits, so they will show up in watchlists. You can view more results, request a new project be added to the list, or request a configuration change for this project using the toolserver tool. If you have any comments or suggestions, please let me know. Thanks! Mr.Z-man 21:26, 2 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Oswaldtwistle Rovers F.C. edit

I'd like to improve this article – mostly because I like the name of the town – and would appreciate any pointers you have. The team played in Lancashire around the turn of the century; do you know of any good sources (web or printed) that could be put to use? Also, I'm not sure the WP Football Clubs Manual of Style makes sense here (we can only write about their history, for example). Are there any other defunct clubs whose article could be used as a template? Thanks! U+003F? 10:52, 3 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

FA Premier League seasons edit

I've noticed that the FA Premier League season articles are all named "xxxx–yy FA Premier League" from 1992 to 2007, and thereafter they're "xxxx–yy Premier League", without the 'FA'. (See Category:Premier League seasons). Is there a reason for this apparent inconsistency? Colonies Chris (talk) 17:26, 20 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Because the 'FA' was dropped from the league name in 2007. Mattythewhite (talk) 17:45, 20 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Jonathan William Hill edit

The Norwegian club Tromsø IL has hired an English assistant coach, Jonathan William Hill, and he has according to this article previously been working in the youth departments of Manchester United and Manchester City, and been technical director of all Jordan youth national teams. As a player he played for Everton's youth department, in has played professional for Crewe and Rochdale, according to Norwegian Wikipedia. The article on no:wp got the information from Hill's Linkedin profile, so neither can be used as a reliable source. My question is, did this guy play professional for Crewe and Rochdale, so that he passes WP:NFOOTY? Mentoz86 (talk) 09:36, 29 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Should playing of the England national team be in the main article? edit

I would have thought such content would be best served as part of the "History" section, since the team's playing style has obviously changed over time. I'm not even sure a nation can have a specific playing style, as different coaches and playing personnel will bring their own styles to the table, although I'm sure the sources you've provided (which I've not read) will prove me wrong. – PeeJay 01:00, 4 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Popular pages tool update edit

As of January, the popular pages tool has moved from the Toolserver to Wikimedia Tool Labs. The code has changed significantly from the Toolserver version, but users should notice few differences. Please take a moment to look over your project's list for any anomalies, such as pages that you expect to see that are missing or pages that seem to have more views than expected. Note that unlike other tools, this tool aggregates all views from redirects, which means it will typically have higher numbers. (For January 2014 specifically, 35 hours of data is missing from the WMF data, which was approximated from other dates. For most articles, this should yield a more accurate number. However, a few articles, like ones featured on the Main Page, may be off).

Web tools, to replace the ones at tools:~alexz/pop, will become available over the next few weeks at toollabs:popularpages. All of the historical data (back to July 2009 for some projects) has been copied over. The tool to view historical data is currently partially available (assessment data and a few projects may not be available at the moment). The tool to add new projects to the bot's list is also available now (editing the configuration of current projects coming soon). Unlike the previous tool, all changes will be effective immediately. OAuth is used to authenticate users, allowing only regular users to make changes to prevent abuse. A visible history of configuration additions and changes is coming soon. Once tools become fully available, their toolserver versions will redirect to Labs.

If you have any questions, want to report any bugs, or there are any features you would like to see that aren't currently available on the Toolserver tools, see the updated FAQ or contact me on my talk page. Mr.Z-bot (talk) (for Mr.Z-man) 05:06, 23 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Notice to participants at this page about adminship edit

Many participants here create a lot of content, have to evaluate whether or not a subject is notable, decide if content complies with BLP policy, and much more. Well, these are just some of the skills considered at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship.

So, please consider taking a look at and watchlisting this page:

You could be very helpful in evaluating potential candidates, and even finding out if you would be a suitable RfA candidate.

Popular pages report edit

We – Community Tech – are happy to announce that the Popular pages bot is back up-and-running (after a one year hiatus)! You're receiving this message because your WikiProject or task force is signed up to receive the popular pages report. Every month, Community Tech bot will post at Wikipedia:WikiProject Football/England task force/Popular pages with a list of the most-viewed pages over the previous month that are within the scope of WikiProject Football.

We've made some enhancements to the original report. Here's what's new:

  • The pageview data includes both desktop and mobile data.
  • The report will include a link to the pageviews tool for each article, to dig deeper into any surprises or anomalies.
  • The report will include the total pageviews for the entire project (including redirects).

We're grateful to Mr.Z-man for his original Mr.Z-bot, and we wish his bot a happy robot retirement. Just as before, we hope the popular pages reports will aid you in understanding the reach of WikiProject Football, and what articles may be deserving of more attention. If you have any questions or concerns please contact us at m:User talk:Community Tech bot.

Warm regards, the Community Tech Team 17:16, 17 May 2017 (UTC)

Articles in need of attention edit

During an AWB run of Category:English footballers, I found a number of articles that need attention. All are currently very basic stubs. Many have had content removed as unreferenced, which could be retrieved from the edit history if appropriate references are found. Others were created as one-line stubs in the first place and have had no attention since. I'll try to get to some of these myself, but thought it'd be useful to put the list out there.

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool edit

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? I am aware that he won the Aston Villa Lions Club Terrace Trophy in 1969 from some photos I have seen online and brief mentions in unrelated articles. However, I am unable to find an article which explicitly and specifically talks about this. Surely there ought to be a list of winners somewhere. If anybody is able to find one or has any information at all regarding the Barrie Hole, please let me know. Many thanks!Vesuvio14 (talk) 16:46, 18 April 2022 (UTC)Reply
