What are those places and are they notable?

I've just stumbled upon the articles Akania Nasirpur and Akania, both in Kachua Upazila. They're sourced to the NGA GeoNames database and claim to be villages. I've been trying to figure out if that's correct. I don't speak Bengali and I don't know much about Bangladesh, but it seems the names of those places are spelt আকানিয়া and আকানিয়া-নাছিরপুর. They do appear on Google Maps and the like, but as far as I'm able to tell, they look more like neighbourhoods than villages proper. There doesn't appear to be any coverage of them on the Bengali Wikipedia (apart from a mention of an Akania Nasirpur High School and an Akania Nasirpur hat-bazaar). The places aren't mentioned in the 2011 district handbook (though it doesn't seem to go below the level of unions).

What are those places? Are they notable? I don't know if this is relevant, but browsing through the categories, I'm seeing a large number of similar articles, with the same sourcing, all created by the same editor in 2008. – Uanfala (talk) 03:44, 9 January 2022 (UTC)

@Uanfala: According to the Community Report of the 2011 Bangladesh census, they are mauzas, the second smallest rural administrative unit. Akania (mauza), population 2,773, comprises two villages, Akania and Rasulpur, in Dakshin Kachua Union. Akania Nasirpur, population 5,275, also comprises two villages, a different Akania and Nairpur (probably a typo for Nasirpur), in Karaia Union.
You may remember article creator Encyclopædius as Dr. Blofeld. They created many, many settlement articles in good faith using an automated script. As I recall, they got through the As, Bs, and were well into the Cs before the community stopped them. Later in their career they expressed distaste for generic stubs of the form "xxx is a village". I believe, although I can't find the post, that they also admitted a measure of regret at having created so many, and tried to delete some, but were overruled on the grounds that Wikipedia is a gazetteer.
Sentiment may be shifting away from keeping all articles on legally recognized populated places. Banstali was deleted last year. Even if there isn't support for deleting them, there might be for redirecting them into "List of villages in yyy district" articles or to the smallest enclosing administrative unit, the union parishad. The former approach would require 64 lists for Bangladesh. The list for Chandpur District would have (or could grow to) about 1500 entries. The latter approach would would lead to embedded lists of more manageable length, but would require 4,554 articles, only about 550 of which currently exist (and, like the mauza/village articles, they're so bad I really wish they didn't exist). --Worldbruce (talk) 05:48, 9 January 2022 (UTC)
Ah, thank you! So the places are not smaller, they're in a way bigger than villages. As far as I'm concerned, they're fine then, though obviously they may have been better ways to accommodate them on Wikipedia. – Uanfala (talk) 17:20, 9 January 2022 (UTC)

Help for Bangladesh term at DYK in regard to notability and sources

I'm hoping to receive input at Template:Did you know nominations/Murad Takla which has been stalled since December 25. The reviewer has questioned the reliability of the sources. I posted on the DYK talk page for assistance to help the nominator a few days ago, but no one has responded. SL93 (talk) 00:28, 26 January 2022 (UTC)

User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.

The Asian Tribune

The page for this Bangladeshi news portal could use some input from knowledgeable editors. The page is currently a mesh between information taken from Asian Tribune, a Thai/Sri Lankan/Swedish e-newspaper that used to appear in print, and information about the seemingly unrelated Bangladeshi news portal that should be covered there. For instance, according to its LinkedIn page (which is not a reliable source, of course) it was founded in 2018 in Dhaka. It would be great if someone could find some (e. g. Bengali) reliable sources covering this portal. Felix QW (talk) 06:15, 27 June 2022 (UTC)

Muhiuddin Khan

Can anyone from this WikiProject find a reliable source that verifies Muhiuddin Khan is no longer living? The infobox states he died in 2016, but the article is still being treated as a BLP. I was able to find this and it seems to be the same person, but the name is slightly different. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:59, 31 May 2022 (UTC)

@Marchjuly: They are, as you suspected, the same person. "Maulana" is an unofficial title of respect prepended to the names of Muslim religious scholars. There is no single standard way of transliterating Bengali, so readers must take variations, such as Muhiuddin to Mohiuddin, in stride. Note that the Daily Sun obituary doesn't even consistently use the same spelling throughout. --Worldbruce (talk) 12:41, 31 May 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply Worldbruce. Actually, there are some sources cited for his death and I'm not sure why I missed that. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:32, 31 May 2022 (UTC)

Another question about the same article. Does anyone know how Khan's name in Bengali (Bengali: মুহিউদ্দিন খান) would be written in the International Phonetic Alphabet? -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:27, 28 July 2022 (UTC)

@Marchjuly Hi, I am not sure why you removed Bengali name from this article? WP:INDICSCRIPT says "This avoidance of Indic scripts only applies to articles that are predominantly India-related and is excluded from, among others, articles about Hinduism, Buddhism, or any of India's neighbouring countries." See an old discussion. Muhiuddin Khan was from Bangladesh, not from India. Bangladesh literally uses a single script - the Bengali script. Please do not apply WP:INDICSCRIPT to Bangladesh related articles. Thank you. আফতাবুজ্জামান (talk) 01:13, 28 July 2022 (UTC)
I mistakenly assumed that INDICSCRIPT applied to the article because Kahn was born in what seems to have been a part of British India. My apologies and I'll re-add in back to the article. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:32, 28 July 2022 (UTC)

Attention to the remarks made by the Telecom minister of Bangladesh about Wikipedia

Hello,

I would like to bring your attention to the remark made by the minister of post and telecommunication during a speech. In his speech he mentioned that he received a report from an intelligence agency that says Wikipedia is spreading misinformation/ disinformation. [1][2] As election year is closing by in Bangladesh, another notable news outlet The Business Standard reported that "Political parties gear up for info wars ahead of next elections." [3]

As we have experienced some vandalism, pushing strong POV and biased non-neutral edits on articles related to Bangladesh in past, I would like to request volunteers of this project to be a little bit more vigilant on sensitive articles and take measures to stop possible attempts to spread disinformation.

Thanks.

Rename to Chattogram, Barishal, Cumilla, Jashore, Bogura

Almost 5 years has now passed since the government renamed Chittagong, Barisal, Comilla, Jessore, Bogura. The "new" spellings are now widely used and consistent, here are a few very eclectic recent sources which use all the new spellings [4][5][6][7][8]. This should satisfy WP:COMMONNAME so I propose renaming the relevant article titles to their official spelling.-AMomen88 (talk) 23:47, 22 January 2023 (UTC)

Enough time has passed that it's good to discuss this again. Unfortunately for me, this is a difficult week to discuss anything because I'm on the road and unable to participate much on Wikipedia. I wouldn't call your five examples eclectic, they're all news organizations within Bangladesh. Counterexamples are easy to find, even in that restricted space, such as this Dhaka Tribune article from 6 weeks ago that uses "Chittagong". Last time I checked, even the Bangladesh Navy, a very different kind of source, still used "Chittagong" about half the time. Any evaluation of WP:COMMONNAME should take not just Bangladeshi news and government sources into account, but also academic sources, and international sources. No category of source published today is likely to use exclusively one or the other spelling, so we need to come up with a more robust way of measuring what is common that just listing examples. --Worldbruce (talk) 03:52, 23 January 2023 (UTC)
By very eclectic I was referring to the content of the news articles. I am more than happy to suspend discussions until you get back, do let us know when this is the case.-AMomen88 (talk) 15:53, 24 January 2023 (UTC)
