Windows 8, Java 7

  Resolved

I have been so stupid to install Windows 8, thinking it would be an improvement to Vista. I am starting to overcome the troubles, but I have now a problem with WPCleaner. I am not sure if the freezing of this program is caused by WPCleaner, Windows 8 or Java. Anyone an idea how to get the program properly running again? The Banner talk 15:26, 31 December 2012 (UTC)

Can you display the Java console ? Is there any message in it showing a problem ? --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 17:55, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
I have downloaded another three updates of Windows 8 and now it works again. BTW, it was not giving error messages, just freezing. The Banner talk 06:48, 1 January 2013 (UTC)
That turns out to be untrue. It freezes less often. But when trying to solve Santa Bárbara d'Oeste, it freezes every time. Mostly when trying to look up "works". The Banner talk 11:42, 2 January 2013 (UTC)
Nothing displayed in the Java console when it freezes ? I don't know how I can investigate on this, I don't have access to a Windows 8 computer... Someone else using WPCleaner with Windows 8 ? --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 12:33, 2 January 2013 (UTC)
I've no problem loading Santa Bárbara d'Oeste on my computer (Win 7, Java 7). works is the last of the request, but as WPCleaner is doing several requests in parallel, it may not be this one that freezes it. In the Options / Limits, you can limit the number of interrogation threads to 1 to see at which requests it's freezing. --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 22:34, 2 January 2013 (UTC)
I see no difference after doing this. Still I have only a success rate of less than 50% while trying to log in. But there seems to be a relation with the number of links in an article or in a template. Above 10 links, I have a fail rate of 99%. At 10 links, the fail rate is an estimated 75%, while at less than then the fail rate is an estimated (but not thoroughly tested) 50%.
It is quite annoying, because the trouble only began after my update from Vista to Windows 8. I have the last version of Java, the last version of WPCleaner and updated Windows to the most recent version. Before, WPCleaner worked nearly always smoothly so I guess the problem is not in Java or WPCleaner, but somewhere in or in the interaction with Windows 8. The Banner talk 15:22, 4 January 2013 (UTC) Don't be afraid, I am not blaming you.
Not afraid ;), just annoyed by this kind of problems that are quite difficult to analyze and solve. Only suggestion for the moment : try different look&feel in WPCleaner options to see if there's a difference. Can you give me more information on your system : which version of Windows 8 ? which version of Java (7.x ? 32 or 64 bits ?, ...) ? --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 11:23, 5 January 2013 (UTC)
Windows 8, version 6.2, build 9200. Java (32 bit): Version 7, update 10, build 1.7.0_10_b18
Today, I suddenly got Java-errors while processing Budapest (not seen before, happened both with metal and classic windows skin): 136 - java.lang.ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException. Perhaps a clue? The Banner talk 13:11, 5 January 2013 (UTC)
Perhaps more interesting than I thought: when I interrupt an analyses, it seems not to close itself down but stays alive. I have to close down WPCleaner altogether for the next try. I tried my luck again on Santa Bárbara d'Oeste (22 links) and it froze again. Ticked it away with the X, wrote this message, tried it again and got the message "WPCleaner is working". Even after a couple minutes after closing the screen. My task manager just gives one active app after closing the screen again. This happens even when I switch to another page to analyse. The Banner talk 13:27, 5 January 2013 (UTC)

I don't know who is responsible for solving this case: you, Wikipedia-whizkids, Java-guys or Microsoft-guys. Perhaps the solution is already in place for a couple of day and that I just did not notice it. But due to the problems I did not try my hand on every article with more than 12 links, as it made WikiCleaner freeze. Today, I pushed my luck and attacked an article with 47 links: all smoothly. No more trouble with logging in too. Finally I can go forward full speed!

Thank you very much for solving this! The Banner talk 11:12, 16 February 2013 (UTC)

Really happy to hear this, because I had no clue about what was going on. --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 12:33, 20 February 2013 (UTC)

You must be logged-in to have a watchlist (but I already logged in)

  Resolved

When I used WPCleaner, I put in my log-in information correctly and I was logged in. However, when I clicked on Watchlist, that error message popped up. Usually, I was able to access the watchlist without any problem. What happened? Believe it or not, my local watchlist and analyzing individual pages work as intended. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 03:05, 7 February 2013 (UTC)

I think I know what happened : yesterday I changed the login function to use https instead of http to have more security. It seems that I should then use https for all API requests. I'm fixing it. --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 06:39, 7 February 2013 (UTC)
Thank you so much. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 17:27, 7 February 2013 (UTC)

WikiCleaner download server down

  Resolved

I tried to reinstall WikiCleaner a few days after getting my new MacBook Pro, since it failed to connect. Right now, I am unable to access the download server for WikiCleaner. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 03:19, 8 March 2013 (UTC)

I couldn't get WikiCleaner started for about 24h. I'm on Windows XP. Tassedethe (talk) 04:40, 8 March 2013 (UTC)
I already had it installed on my Windows 7 machine, so launching it and logging in works for me. GoingBatty (talk) 04:59, 8 March 2013 (UTC)
I'm currently on holidays with poor internet access, so I won't be able to do much in the next 2 weeks. It work for me (launching the already installed WPCleaner or accessing the installation URL). --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 15:28, 8 March 2013 (UTC)
It finally works (I use OS X Mountain Lion). Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 17:07, 8 March 2013 (UTC)

An error occurred: Error accessing MediaWiki

  Resolved

Hi. I want to use WPCleaner, but WPCleaner can't login and this error message appears:

An error occurred: Error accessing MediaWiki

How can I solve this? The reason for this error? Thanks. Zheek (talk) 17:19, 21 March 2013 (UTC)

Hi. Do you use a proxy or a firewall of some kind ? The error seems to be that WPCleaner can't use MediaWiki API which is available through URL like http://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php. During the installation, did you checked the "Trust" checkbox ? --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 18:03, 22 March 2013 (UTC)
No. I don't use proxy. I used Manual installation/version of WPCleaner. Should I add it to Windows Firewall's Exceptions? Or delete it and use Installer version? My OS is Windows XP with latest JRE version. Zheek (talk) 18:14, 22 March 2013 (UTC)
WPCleaner needs to access MediaWiki API (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php for enwiki for example) to be able to do anything. So, if your firewall configuration currently prevents this for the Java programe, you need to change its configuration. You should also grant access to the toolserver for marking errors fixed for the Check Wiki project. --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 18:19, 22 March 2013 (UTC)
I can't access "https://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php" with HTTPS but the page is available with HTTP. I think this is a problem from my ISP. Does it matter? Does WPCleaner use HTTPS? Because Wikipedia with HTTPS is not available for me and I use HTTP. Zheek (talk) 18:31, 22 March 2013 (UTC)
Strange, I doubt that an ISP would prevent HTTPS access (it's required by many websites, like online banking, ...). HTTPS goes through port 443 instead of port 80 for HTTP, maybe you can check with your firewall if you have authorized rules for port 80 (or HTTP) and should copy them for HTTPS.
Not long ago I modified WPCleaner to use HTTPS only to improve security (otherwise password was sent as clear text). I'm just coming back from holidays and my development computer is broken, so I can't do any modification right now to allow using HTTP as a configuration option. I can make a modification when my computer is working again if you still have problems. --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 19:00, 22 March 2013 (UTC)
They disabled it only for Wikipedia. On other websites it's available (like GMail) and I can access them without any problem but not Wikipedia. I don't know why they did that. So I'll wait for HTTP option in the next release of WPCleaner. WPCleaner is a handy tool and I want it. It seems "Enabling HTTP" in WPCleaner is the only solution for me. Thank you for your help. Zheek (talk) 19:23, 22 March 2013 (UTC)
New release available with an option for using HTTP. If it works, I suggest to use the automatic installation which updates itself automatically. --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 16:06, 29 March 2013 (UTC)
Thanks. I will install it. After installation I will report on here about it. Zheek (talk) 20:02, 29 March 2013 (UTC)
Downloaded but it's still the previous version (1.26) and not updated. I used automatic installer. Zheek (talk) 20:26, 29 March 2013 (UTC)
Some changes are included, even though the version number doesn't get incremented. Do you still have the problem? GoingBatty (talk) 21:22, 29 March 2013 (UTC)
I don't change the version every time, but you should see a new check box in the options to use HTTP. --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 07:54, 30 March 2013 (UTC)
I purged Java cache and tested both automatic and manual versions, I don't see that "HTTP" check box in GUI. Zheek (talk) 08:11, 30 March 2013 (UTC)
Strange, I'm using the automatic version and I have the "Use HTTP for MediaWiki API calls (less secure)" check box in the Options window (General tab). --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 11:34, 30 March 2013 (UTC)
Solved. It works. Now I can login without any problem. Great work. Thank you very much. Zheek (talk) 12:57, 30 March 2013 (UTC)

Automatic fixing broken?

  Resolved

Hi NicoV, I haven't been able to get 'Automatic fixing' to work in last couple of days. I've noticed the layout has changed. Thanks. Tassedethe (talk) 17:16, 11 May 2013 (UTC)

Hi, it should be fixed now. I made a stupid bug when I redesigned this feature to have a better look and be able to deal with regular expressions. --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 20:07, 13 May 2013 (UTC)
Great, I look forward to trying it. Once again many thanks for a very useful tool. :) Tassedethe (talk) 20:16, 13 May 2013 (UTC)
And a bonus: some Check Wiki errors can be automatically fixed when using this feature now. --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 07:24, 20 May 2013 (UTC)

<br> tag

  Resolved

Wikimedia software has turned off XHTML and HTML5 is now the default language (see Tech News 2013/21). I saw an edit changing </br> to <br />. In HTML5, <br> is default while <br /> is optional. See W3C HTML draft. So, when you come across </br>, it should be changed to <br>. Bgwhite (talk) 06:18, 21 June 2013 (UTC)

Hum, I'm not sure. MediaWiki is still rendering articles with <br/> (see the footer of every article which is generated by the software). I don't mind changing it but I prefer the full construct (which is XHTML compatible). I will look into this when back from holidays. --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 13:21, 22 June 2013 (UTC)
I'm not advocating changing <br /> to <br>. I'm only advocating changing a bad br tag to <br>. "Optional" things have a habit of going away alot easier than "standard" ways. XHTML is dead and Wikimedia is no longer supporting it... doesn't mean everything is going away right now. See User talk:Magioladitis/Archive 11#Trivial edit for more info. The one thing I'm truly envious of the French, their long holidays. I'd hate your right now if I wasn't so jealous. Bgwhite (talk) 21:09, 22 June 2013 (UTC)
Ok, I've changed it in the next release.
It was only a little more than a week of holidays, not yet the long holidays ;) --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 20:29, 27 June 2013 (UTC)
To let you know, my script turns them all into <br />. I have a very strong reason to do this: Clearness/consistency/uniformity. For example it is wrong to write <references>, <ref name="..."> and <nowiki> without a closing tag. This must be written as <references />, <ref name="..." /> and <nowiki />. Why should we teach the users to add the slash in these cases but not in other cases? This is confusing. Wiki syntax is not easy to learn. Being consistent makes it easier to understand. --TMg 09:47, 3 July 2013 (UTC)
I wasn't really sure about this change, I will think about this... I've seen that <br /> seems the way to go in Wikipedia:Line-break handling#Break tags since HTML Tidy is converting all of them to that. --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 10:10, 3 July 2013 (UTC)
Added a section on the talk page about this... --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 13:06, 3 July 2013 (UTC)
I have commented on this matter several times in the past, most recently at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)/Archive 113#CHECKWIKI and/or AWB removing self-closing XHTML syntax and User talk:Magioladitis/Archive 11#Trivial edit. Despite what the VPT thread says, HTMLTidy converts <br> to <br />, as stated by NicoV at 10:10, 3 July 2013 above. I would leave <br> and <br/> (without space) alone, since there is nothing technically wrong with those, but alter all other forms, such as </br> <.br> <br.> to <br /> (with space). --Redrose64 (talk) 14:36, 3 July 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for the answer. I never modify <br> and <br/>, since they are both correct. I think I will switch back to <br />, eventually adding an option in WPCleaner configuration, so that each wiki can change this behaviour. --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 14:53, 3 July 2013 (UTC)
The XHTML section will be removed from Tidy at some point. I see talk about, but no concrete date. It is only a matter of time. It only took them a year to finally switch off the XHMTL.
Again, I'm not advocating changing <br /> to <br>. If people want or don't want to do it, it is fine. However, I am advocating changing messed up br tags to <br>. <br> is the proper way. In the end, it is a trivial issue and nothing to get worked up over. Bgwhite (talk) 08:10, 4 July 2013 (UTC)
Bgwhite, most users do not know and should not care about the fundamental differences between HTML and MediaWiki extensions. If we tell them they can omit the slash from <br /> the will try to omit the slash from <ref name="..." /> and <nowiki /> and fail because this is not valid. I want to avoid that. It's a good idea to not touch <br> because there is nothing wrong with it. But if a script touches a standalone tag anyway it should always make it <br />. No matter if we render XHTML or HTML5 or what. This is my opinion. --TMg 18:35, 17 July 2013 (UTC)
TMg. So, what's new? Already have people doing </br>... 2,200 articles last month. You can also say the use of <br /> will lead people to do <small /> and <center />. Just because one tag uses one way doesn't mean people will do the same way for all tags. The standard says <br> with <br /> optional. I've always tried to go the "standard", not optional, route as it resulted in less troubles. But, as I have already said, this is trivial. </br>, <font> and others are the bigger fish. Bgwhite (talk) 04:37, 18 July 2013 (UTC)
Nothing new. Just explaining. We are replacing every <br> with <br /> in the German Wikipedia for many years and never had much trouble. As always a few people are suspicious but accepting the change after a short explanation. Line breaks shouldn't be used anyway and we try to remove them whenever we can or replace them with more meaningful syntax. Another advantage of the longer syntax is: the line breaks are better visible in the source. You have a valid point too with your "people will write <small />" example. But this does not make the other points invalid. The "standard" is not a good argument in my opinion because both is allowed and always was. An <element> syntax is always a hint that a closing tag is needed. It's confusing if the same syntax does not require a closing tag in one case when there are many, many other cases where it's required. --TMg 10:39, 18 July 2013 (UTC)

Fixing VisualEditor errors

  Resolved

I've proposed creating a bot for VE-related errors, now that they are starting to show up in IP edits (because the VE Team, yesterday, enabled VE for everyone) (background: WP:VPR#Filter 550 should disallow). At the BOTREQ page, someone pointed out that a bot needs a high degree of assurance of no false positives. I think for some errors that threshold can be met, but for others - and maybe all errors - a tool like WPCleaner could be better. So, is it possible to detect and fix errors such as this?

<nowiki>[[whatever]]</nowiki>

[The "nowiki" tags are getting embedded by VE, into the wikitext (VE doesn't like raw wikitext; think of the nowiki tags as its defense mechanism).]

-- John Broughton (♫♫) 18:22, 16 July 2013 (UTC)

Hi, I've followed this mess and you may have seen me posting about this kind of things in the VE feedback page. I absolutely don't understand WMF about this...
I can look at this to add a specific error, but I'm wondering what I should look. I browsed error 550 for a few reports, and the problem seems very different from one to an other. Do you just want me to detect text between <nowiki>...</nowiki> and suggest removing the tags ? --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 18:42, 16 July 2013 (UTC)
Ok, I made a first attempt at this. If you want to try it, edit Special:MyPage/WikiCleanerConfiguration and add the following contents (with the <source>...</source> tags):
# Configuration for error 518: nowiki tags
error_518_bot_enwiki=true END
After that, in WPCleaner the Abuse filters button lets you choose which Abuse filter you are interested in (choose 550) and gives you the list of pages having triggered that filter. When you analyze a page, <nowiki>...</nowiki> tags are found and suggestions are given to fix them. --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 22:41, 17 July 2013 (UTC)

Font size

  Resolved

Is it possible to make the font size scalable in the future? Now the letters are often very small, making it necessary for this semi-old man to put up his reading glasses. And I guess more users will benefit from a bigger letter. The Banner talk 11:10, 20 July 2013 (UTC)

I have to check what I can do for the font size. --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 06:50, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
Ok, you now have an option in the Formatting tab to increase font size (WPCleaner needs to be restarted). --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 17:57, 19 August 2013 (UTC)

I received the WikiCleaner Security Warning on the Mac

  Resolved

See here: http://i.imgur.com/sQCXrrp.png

I am using the latest version of Java (Java 7) using Mac OS X version 10.8.5. Before the update, I do not see that warning window. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 02:26, 17 October 2013 (UTC)

Johnny Au, This warning is part of a recent Java update (see "New Security Warnings for Unsigned and Self-Signed Applications"). This was pushed out in Java7 update 40 on September 10. If one doesn't pay money to Oracle to certify the program (WPCleaner) is blessed, the warning appears. It's fine to the run the program now, but in the future it will be blocked from running at all. I don't get this warning as I'm using OpenJDK/Linux version and not Oracle's official version. Nico probably knows more. Bgwhite (talk) 05:30, 17 October 2013 (UTC)
Hi, thanks for the information. I don't really follow Oracle announcements, so I wasn't aware of this new security features. I will check what I can do about this. --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 05:58, 17 October 2013 (UTC)
I only knew about it because it was on Slashdot a few months back. It's really amazing that I remembered it at all. Bgwhite (talk) 06:11, 17 October 2013 (UTC)
Johnny Au, I've uploaded a new version, do you see any difference (at least in the message) ? --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 15:54, 17 October 2013 (UTC)
Yes. There is no more of that "This application will be blocked in the future" message, but that window still appears every time I want to run it. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 16:53, 17 October 2013 (UTC)
Ok, that's what I feared... If I read correctly what Oracle has done, I would need to pay for a trusted certificate so that I can sign WPCleaner with it. I'll look at how much that may cost. --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 18:11, 17 October 2013 (UTC)
Seems very expensive for an opensource tool :-( first search: http://www.digicert.com/code-signing/ev-code-signing-compared.htm. Maybe possible to get some cheaper (https://www.certum.eu/certum/cert,offer_en_open_source_cs.xml, http://codesigning.ksoftware.net/). If anyone knows how to get such certificate for signing opensource software at a cheap price, I'm interested. --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 18:19, 17 October 2013 (UTC)

Johnny Au, I managed to get a certificate from Certum for free as an open source developer. But I still haven't found how to use it properly : I think that my application is now signed with it, but Java still doesn't seem to accept it as trusted. Do you see any difference ? --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 20:50, 18 October 2013 (UTC)

I asked about WMF funding here Bgwhite (talk) 21:07, 18 October 2013 (UTC)
Application cannot launch. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 03:46, 19 October 2013 (UTC)
Hum, it shouldn't have a problem, I don't understand. I put back the version with the self signed certificate, does it work ? --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 08:36, 19 October 2013 (UTC)
Johnny Au, can you try a test version [http://site4145.mutu.sivit.org/WikiCleaner/WikiCleanerTest.jnlp] ? Does WPCleaner run ? If it runs, what is the displayed Editor and does Java allow you to accept it once and for all ? (others are welcome to test and report with their configuration: OS, java version, ...)
Bgwhite, thanks for asking about the funding, maybe that can help. I still have to understand why Java doesn't trust my certificate...
--NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 16:35, 20 October 2013 (UTC)
Yes it runs under Java 7, but I still have to accept the security warning every single time, which can get annoying. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 16:53, 20 October 2013 (UTC)
Johnny Au, can you try again the test version ? For me, it's not asking any more to accept the security warning every time. If it works for you, I will ask other people to test it to be sure. --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 18:00, 21 October 2013 (UTC)
It finally works! Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 02:45, 22 October 2013 (UTC)

Hello folks, I stumbled across this issue over on another talkpage. Bgwhite mentioned using OpenJDK, and not having the trouble; there is also the IcedTea plugin, for browser-applets. Would those not work as an alternative, rather than paying Oracle's annual fee for GPL software? There is an oft-updated 'unofficial' installer for OSX with Java7, as well as for Windows with Java7 or Java6.[1] (Linux and BSD typically already start with OpenJDK rather than OraJRE.) HTH. Ping my talkpage if you need further info. Thanks for improving wikipedia. 74.192.84.101 (talk) 05:35, 26 October 2013 (UTC)

Yes, you don't have the problem when using OpenJDK, but it's not very nice to have to ask users to install a specific JRE. I'd prefer that WPCleaner run smoothly also with official JRE from Oracle. --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 11:09, 26 October 2013 (UTC)

Johnny Au, Bgwhite, I've released WPCleaner 1.30 yesterday, and it's signed with the official certificate, so you should not have troubles any more with this new version. --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 09:56, 30 October 2013 (UTC)

Help requested

  Resolved

Hi, with the recent modifications in Java by Oracle, constraints have increased for the deployment of Java applications as applets or with Java Web Start (WPCleaner case for most of you). Currently, with the latest Java release, user needs to accept to trust a self-signed application every time, and a warning message says that it won't even be possible in future releases. To solve that problem, I made a test to sign WPCleaner with a trusted certificate. It seems to work (me and Johnny Au), but I'd prefer more feedback before activating it. Could you test with the address http://site4145.mutu.sivit.org/WikiCleaner/WikiCleanerTest.jnlp (test version), and tell me if you see any difference with the old version, which java version you're using and under which OS ? Thanks.

I can get it now. I'm running OpenJDK 7, update 60 on Fedora. I've yet to see any warning screens. Bgwhite (talk) 18:18, 22 October 2013 (UTC)

Empty section

Why is WPCleaner suggesting to remove an emty section, while the at CHECKWIKI's toolserver site it says that an {{empty section}}-template is recomended? -(tJosve05a (c) 18:50, 1 November 2013 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for the information. I'm personally using WPCleaner on frwiki, not on enwiki, so I've configured it more thoroughly on frwiki than in enwiki. I've just changed the configuration so that WPCleaner can suggest {{Empty section}}. It's quite likely that configuration for enwiki could be changed to have WPCleaner being more useful here, but I'm not editing enough on enwiki to know what the configuration should be. Description of all configuration is available at Wikipedia:WPCleaner/Configuration/Help. --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 19:23, 1 November 2013 (UTC)
I'm not aware of any consensus on what to do with empty sections. CheckWiki recommends {{Empty section}} as that is the preferred way of handling it by a AWB/Checkwiki developer. CheckWiki also only checks level 2 headers, ie == Section ==, and nothing lower. AWB only places the template on level 2 headers. Deleting the section or adding {{Expand section}} are two other ways mentioned on how to handle empty sections. There are situations where removing a template or doing nothing are appropriate. Because a season may not be complete, a page for a sports team's season shouldn't have section headings removed. An older article with a reference section, but no references, could have the section heading removed. Long story short, use your best judgement. Bgwhite (talk) 20:20, 1 November 2013 (UTC)

By the way, User:Josve05a, you may be interested to know that it's now possible to have MediaWiki use a smarter sort algorithm for categories, removing the need to replace characters with accent marks by an other character. re-test new JNLP cert

  Resolved

Hello again NicoV. Looks like the new cert works fine, now, on my box.

test of new cert once again, works fine, Ubuntu1204 + JDK6

This is an update on my old beta-test.Wikipedia_talk:WPCleaner/Archive_2013#Help_requested

  1. testing once more, now that new cert is deployed
  2. clicked installation-instructions at top,
  3. clicked "In short, the installation is done directly using this address" which was
  4. http://site4145.mutu.sivit.org/WikiCleaner/WikiCleaner.jnlp
  5. JNLP file, 862 bytes, open with "IcedTea Java Web Start"
  6. download takes ~3 minutes
  7. app's digisig verified (nicoV by UnizetoPL)
  8. unchecked always-trust (sorry you have to prove it each time ;-)
  9. clicked run
  10. app requests permission to create dtop launcher (allow)
  11. after a minute, launches
  12. click login
  13. entered an articlename in topright dropdown, clicked WhatLinksHere button
  14. seemed to work fine, although info shown isn't *identical* with wikipedia > tools > what links here
  15. good job, merci.

However, note that helpdocs are out of date, still says "cannot be verified" in screenshot#2.[4] I didn't think to take a screenshot when I was installing, but if you cannot find anybody else who is upgrading, I can uninstall, then take a new pic when I reinstall. 74.192.84.101 (talk) 22:01, 16 November 2013 (UTC)

p.s. While I agree with you that in the short term it is good for wpCleaner to have an official cert, and pay the official fees, to work with the official OraJDK ... in the long run, I think wpCleaner is important for wikipedia, and would like to have wpCleaner (just like the rest of wikipedia herself) free-as-in-freedom. If we have to pay money, whether directly from our own pockets, or indirectly from the WMF pockets which are filled by wikipedian-donations, I'd rather pay it to some devs to upgrade wpCleaner so that wiki-tools stop relying on Oracle, as opposed to keep on paying Oracle's fees forever. Anyways, I used to be pretty handy with Java, if you want any assistance please ping my enWiki talkpage. Thanks for improving wikipedia. 74.192.84.101 (talk) 22:01, 16 November 2013 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for the information.
Currently I'm not paying anything for the certificate, Certum delivered it for free as WPCleaner is an opensource software. If it keeps being that way, it's all good for me. Anyway, if money was involved it wouldn't go to Oracle, but to a certificate authority. I'd love if WMF was able to deliver their own certificate...
I know the doc is often out of date: it requires a lot of work to maintain, and maintaining the doc is not the part I prefer doing... so any help is welcome for maintaining screenshots or help page :-) --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 22:22, 16 November 2013 (UTC)

Transfer local watchlist?

  Resolved

Hi. I have a local watchlist on one computer and want to transfer it to WPCleaner on a different computer. I can save the list but I don't see where I can upload it or use it to create a new local watchlist. I did look in the Help so I apologise if I missed the appropriate section! Thanks! Tassedethe (talk) 23:57, 22 November 2013 (UTC)

Hello Tassedethe, I don't think there's anything in the documentation about this, the only thing related is Wikipedia:WPCleaner/Installation#Using same preferences on an other computer which allows you to transfer all configuration from one PC to an other if they both run Windows. Transferring the local watchlist is quite similar, it's stored in regedit in a subdirectory: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\JavaSoft\Prefs\org\wikipediacleaner\/Wikipedia\fr\/Watch/Pages (replace "fr" by the wiki you're interested in). If you're not using Windows, there's probably a similar ways and I can look into it if you tell me which OS you're using. --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 12:50, 23 November 2013 (UTC)
Thanks! That worked perfectly. Tassedethe (talk) 15:23, 23 November 2013 (UTC)

#61 oops

WPCleaner thinks there is a #61 error in 2009–10 Northampton Town F.C. season. It's in a table and thinks "2010.</ref>!!{{yel}}!!" is an error. In Checkwiki, there can only be an error if "! " is found after the ref tag. I did that because of tables. Bgwhite (talk) 02:06, 23 November 2013 (UTC)

Hi, I'm releasing WPCleaner often, without changing the version number (lazy...) unless there's an important change. I've released all modifications made yesterday. As Josve05a said, the "b" is just here to tell what has been done in bot mode. --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 10:08, 25 November 2013 (UTC)

Tough request... How can WPCleaner know it's a person, and which part is the last name ? This is a difficult one, I don't know how to reliably decide what to use for the DEFAULTSORT. --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 10:54, 25 November 2013 (UTC)
Magioladitis How did you make AWB recognize who is person. (trade secrets?) -(tJosve05a (c) 10:58, 25 November 2013 (UTC)
No, this should not be done. Not all DEFAULTSORT values are last name first. Majority of eastern Asian names already have surname first. A comma is all that needs to be added. Spanish names have two surnames, both should be used. Arabic names often use two word surnames or drop a word on a surname. Malaysian and Icelandic names have no surnames. See WP:NAMESORT for the grizzly details. Bgwhite (talk) 20:59, 25 November 2013 (UTC)

Cannot change link to article that has quotation marks within its name

I was using the WPCleaner to bypass redirects. In the Toronto Pearson International Airport article, there was a link to Del_Caribe_International_Airport. The correct link is Del_Caribe_"Santiago_Mariño"_International_Airport. However, WPCleaner does not recognize the "Santiago Mariño" part of the article name (with quotation marks) and thus the change is not recorded. I had to bypass the redirect using Popups. Thank you. I was going to say whitelist the thing or make one of the -- a different dash, but I'd say remove it the tag all together. It would be useful information to show upcoming matches. Whitelisting wouldn't be a good option as the comment tag would be removed at the end of the season. I made the change, but I'd wager I'll be reverted. Bgwhite (talk) 20:11, 2 December 2013 (UTC)

Log out

When I log out from WPCleaner to lo-in to my bots account, I also get logged out from en.wikipedia.org (in my bowser; I am using Google Chrome). Why does I get logged out on the browser too? -(tJosve05a (c) 23:09, 4 December 2013 (UTC)

This is the way Wikipedia login/logout works : try using 2 different browsers and logout from one, you should get logget out in the other one. One way: don't logout from WPCleaner, just quit and then restart to login with you other account. I don't think I can do anything to change the behavior of logout. --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 06:11, 5 December 2013 (UTC)

This edit?

Is there any way to prevent this edtt? -(tJosve05a (c) 12:43, 5 December 2013 (UTC)

What's the problem with this edit ? Level 0 titles shouldn't be used in article text, so WPCleaner increases the level title by 1 for each title in bot mode. --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 13:55, 5 December 2013 (UTC)
This should not be a bot function, due to that every header was move down a lever (from 0 to 1, 2 to 3) even though only one header was wrong. This shold be a manual edith with sugestion. -(tJosve05a (c) 15:56, 5 December 2013 (UTC)
I think this is debatable : the TOC was simply kept as it was, in fact nothing was changed in the article except for the style applied to the titles. The fact that, in addition to the level 0 problem, there was also a problem on the organization of the titles is not for the bot to be concerned of. The bot fixed the first problem, and simply left the second existing problem. --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 17:26, 5 December 2013 (UTC)

HOLIDAYS !

Hi everyone, I am on holidays for a few weeks, and probably won't be able to answer questions or work on WPCleaner. You can keep posting here, I will probably read you when back from holidays. --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 22:07, 6 December 2013 (UTC)

Tssss... Merry Christmas and enjoy your holidays! The Banner talk 12:05, 20 December 2013 (UTC)
Hope everything goes well for the holidays. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 03:08, 23 December 2013 (UTC)

Happy new year for everyone! Holidays are not over yet (sorry for the jealous ones  ), but at least I should now have access to internet on a regular basis rather than no connection at all. I won't be able to update WPCleaner in at least the next 2 weeks, so I still need some time for unwrapping all gifts from Bgwhite  . Still a bit of patience required. --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 20:46, 7 January 2014 (UTC)
