Done Full analysis fails on The Matrix

Full analysis on The Matrix is stuck "Analyzing Data" and never returns. --Muhandes (talk) 14:02, 15 July 2010 (UTC)

Ok, I can reproduce it on my own computer. I will try to fix it tomorrow if I have the time. --NicoV (talk) 22:34, 15 July 2010 (UTC)
Well, I have the impression that this is a pure Java bug : simply copying the text of the page into a JTextPane component produces the same kind of Exception. I tracked it down to the kn interwiki where a character makes Java crash. I have opened a topic on Java forums for this problem. I am hoping to get an answer for this. --NicoV (talk) 20:43, 16 July 2010 (UTC)
I managed to create a small reproducible example of the problem and I posted it on the Java forums. Hopefully, someone will help. --NicoV (talk) 21:34, 27 August 2010 (UTC)
My previous bug report seems to have been lost. I submitted again a bug report about this problem with a small example program to reproduce it. It should be visible here in a few days I hope, time for Oracle to make a first analysis. --NicoV (talk) 21:50, 31 January 2012 (UTC)
Well, it's only been a year and a half, no hurry :) --Muhandes (talk) 08:57, 1 February 2012 (UTC)
Yes, long time for this one. I don't find a solution other than fixing Java (except switching to the Java Look & Feel instead of the OS Look & Feel, but I don't like it). The process for submitting a bug report to Oracle is not very friendly. Once submitted, the bug report completely disappears until someone from Oracle has reviewed it and accepted it. I'm not even sure I will be informed when it has been reviewed and accepted or rejected... For the previous report, I never had any answer and I can't find my report again on their website. --NicoV (talk) 10:06, 1 February 2012 (UTC)
The bug report is now available here. You can vote for this bug if you want it to be solved more quickly by Oracle. --NicoV (talk) 06:54, 3 February 2012 (UTC)
Version 1.10 should help to have a work around this problem by changing the Look&Feel to Nimbus instead of System. --NicoV (talk) 18:57, 3 February 2012 (UTC)

 Done Slow...

Suddenly WikiCleaner is tragicly slow and eats up about 50% of CPU-capacity. What is going on here? Night of the Big Wind talk 02:58, 24 July 2011 (UTC)

Also seeing new slowness - is it caused by the coloring of the links/templates/section headers (which is also new for me)? GoingBatty (talk) 03:08, 24 July 2011 (UTC)
Oups, maybe the new options, I didn't pay attention. Can you try deactivating the coloring (all the ones that have a background color in the options) ? Needs restarting WPCleaner to have effect. --NicoV (talk) 08:45, 24 July 2011 (UTC)
Tried it, still horrible slow. Too slow to use! Night of the Big Wind talk 12:07, 24 July 2011 (UTC)
I have been timing it! It take 60 to 80 seconds just to jump to a dab-link in the list. And 30 to 45 seconds to save a change. Night of the Big Wind talk 13:09, 24 July 2011 (UTC)
Ok, I have just released an other version that I hope should be better. Two modifications mainly : internal optimizations, and a global option to deactivate syntax highlighting (taken into account without needing to quit). Is it ok now ? I have other ideas to speed it up, but it requires some work. --NicoV (talk) 19:36, 24 July 2011 (UTC)
Still quite slow, especially when 30-40 pages are open (which was a breeze before). After a while it got better, but at first I couldn't do a thing. Must be some new feature (I noticed a lot of colors). --Muhandes (talk) 20:21, 24 July 2011 (UTC)
Can you try without the syntax coloring ? It can be deactivated in the options in the Formatting tab by unchecking the first check box (syntax highlighting). I know syntax coloring is requiring quite some resources, but hopefully with it deactivated it should work around the same speed as before. --NicoV (talk) 20:46, 24 July 2011 (UTC)
When loading the program, I noticed it was downloading, but it still says "Version 1.09 (Jul 5, 2011)". I deactivated the syntax coloring for everything but internal liks (which is helpful for identifying overlinking), and it seems to be OK now. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 20:57, 24 July 2011 (UTC)
Turning Syntax Highlighting off made things better for most files, but it still takes 4-5 seconds to move from link to link in Hope Diamond. --Muhandes (talk) 21:24, 24 July 2011 (UTC)
I will continue to investigate for making it faster during the week if I have time. I haven't changed the version number, it's still 1.09 (the last version has the global check box for syntax highlighting in the options). I will check with Hope Diamond to see where time is lost. --NicoV (talk) 21:46, 24 July 2011 (UTC)
I made a lot of modifications recently, adding new features and trying to make performance improvements. Is it better ? If not, can you give me a page where it's slow ? --NicoV (talk) 20:48, 20 March 2012 (UTC)

Done WikiCleaner failed to start up

I noticed that on the start of December, WikiCleaner failed to start up for me. The Javascript did not load up even. The last time it worked was on November 30, 2011. I am using Ubuntu 11.10. Thank you. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 17:43, 4 December 2011 (UTC)

Hi, it's working correctly for me right now (under Windows). I haven't changed anything in it for the last 2 weeks. Do you see any error message (in WPCleaner or in the Java console) ? Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling it ? --NicoV (talk) 04:34, 5 December 2011 (UTC)
Let me try that, as well as restarting the computer. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 03:00, 7 December 2011 (UTC)
I had to install it manually and to run it, I had to open with OpenJDK Java 6 Runtime. It works, though quite cumbersome (the instructions you gave me did not work). Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 03:44, 7 December 2011 (UTC)
If you still have problem, you can also try clearing the Java cache, like what was recommended sometimes for the upgrade to 7u5 or 6u33. post explaining. --NicoV (talk) 14:42, 17 July 2012 (UTC)

 Done "dab_warning_template"

What is the "dab_warning_template" that must be defined in the Wikipedia Cleaner configuration? How do I do that? Allen (talk) 00:56, 26 January 2012 (UTC)

Hi.
This is a parameter that can be configured at the wiki level in User:NicoV/WikiCleanerConfiguration. It's optional. I announced this parameter some time ago, [1].
I believe only frwiki has configured it for the moment (see fr:Utilisateur:NicoV/WikiCleanerConfiguration). It contains the name of a template used on talk pages to give the list of remaining dablinks in the article. See fr:Modèle:Avertissement Homonymie in frwiki and its use on about 40.000 talk pages.
Configuring this parameter depends on the wishes of the dablinks project in each wiki. On frwiki, we have decided to use it, and WPCleaner automatically puts it or updates it in the talk page when fixing dablinks in the article.
Hope this helps. --NicoV (talk) 17:58, 26 January 2012 (UTC)

Done Error 16 - Template contains Unicode control characters

It appears that the fix for this error can reverse Arabic words (see here). Is this an issue with the person who wrote the Arabic text, or something the cleaner shouldn't be doing? Since I can't read Arabic, I can't tell when this is happening until I'm notified. Thanks for your assistance! -Niceguyedc Go Huskies! 17:55, 20 February 2012 (UTC)

Strange. I will check but it don't think it should be doing this. --NicoV (talk) 07:18, 21 February 2012 (UTC)
I've changed WPCleaner for not doing automatic replacement of Unicode control characters in templates. I really don't know if having those characters in the Arabic text is normal or not. If anyone knows about those control characters, please explain to me what WPCleaner should do. --NicoV (talk) 20:37, 20 March 2012 (UTC)

 Done Any changes?

I suddenly get all kinds of strange links in view while other have disappeared. I was recently working on List of German exonyms for places in the Czech Republic and had about a hundred links to dab-pages to go. 1) Suddenly, without any change in the article, that is reduced to 52. What happend?
2) Red links are now showing up ans striked-through links. How can I switch that off?
3) Their seems to be a problem with uncommon characters, like in Žďárky, showing up as black. Something wrong with these links, because the links are correct.
Night of the Big Wind talk 13:30, 12 May 2012 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for the report.
Apparently there's a bug in MediaWiki API with uncommon characters. I've juste made a few tests that confirm this analysis, and I've sent a mail to the API discussion list providing them with an example.
In some cases, API answers are incorrect when page names contain uncommon characters, so WPCleaner doesn't have correct information for some links. I'm waiting for an answer on the API list to see if there's something else going on. --NicoV (talk) 15:44, 14 May 2012 (UTC)
The problem seems to appear with big API requests only, so I'm changing WPCleaner configuration to make shorter requests. It should reduce drastically the number of problems, but will probably be slower because it increases the number of requests. --NicoV (talk) 15:56, 14 May 2012 (UTC)
Bug reported. I found a way around this bug, it should work (using POST requests instead of GET). --NicoV (talk) 20:58, 14 May 2012 (UTC)
In response to question 2, the answer is in the Options section. If you don't want to see the redlinks at all, go to the Full analysis tab and uncheck "Show missing pages". If you want the redlinks listed but not struck through, go to the Formatting tab and unselect the a button. GoingBatty (talk) 00:54, 15 May 2012 (UTC)
No, that is not the solution, because it is unchecked... After testing: no difference in checking or unchecking. They just show up. Night of the Big Wind talk 07:33, 15 May 2012 (UTC)
Do you still have a problem ? I thought that my temporary fix (using POST) should have fixed everything. --NicoV (talk) 20:17, 16 May 2012 (UTC)
Yes, it works again. All 106 links to disambigpages are back again :-( Night of the Big Wind talk 21:05, 16 May 2012 (UTC)

Done Error 48 - Title linked in text

I just got a note from an editor that a removal of a linked title in the text broke part of the page. It appears that poly lines need a link at the end of them, so if the link happens to point to the page it is on, it needs to stay. Is it possible to update the code to prevent this removal of the link? -Niceguyedc Go Huskies! 05:59, 17 May 2012 (UTC)

Ok, I will try to make some modifications to handle <imagemap> more properly (example of problem). --NicoV (talk) 20:52, 18 May 2012 (UTC)
After some thinking, I think that reporting this error is still a good idea, because this syntax will create an area in the image that when clicked display again the same page... not very useful. I think that the correct fixing is to remove entirely the poly line which is useless. What do you think? --NicoV (talk) 22:23, 19 May 2012 (UTC)
I would agree. There is no need for that poly line at all. Keeping the reporting of the error sounds correct to me. -Niceguyedc Go Huskies! 21:46, 22 May 2012 (UTC)
Done, the suggestion made by WPC is now to delete the entire line if the link is in a line in imagemap. --NicoV (talk) 23:24, 7 July 2012 (UTC)

 Done Java Update

I updated Java today to version 6.33. Unfortunately, WikiCleaner has stopped working because of that. When starting it gives to errors: 1) Unsigned application requesting unrestricted access to system and 2) Unsigned resource http://site4145.mutu.sivit.org/WikiCleaner/commons-codec-1.3.jar

Something has gone wrong, but I am not sure where the problem can be found. Night of the Big Wind talk 20:45, 26 June 2012 (UTC)

Hi, I had the same kind of report last Thursday on frwiki by a user who installed an update with Java 7u5. I installed it myself before leaving for the weekend, and had the same problem (not on the same jar, file, but same error message). When I came back from the weekend, I tried again and everything is working correctly since then, without any change made by me... I don't understand what's going on, for what I know all the files are correctly signed. Have you tried after restarting your computer ? (for now, this is my best guess on why it's working again for me). --NicoV (talk) 07:20, 27 June 2012 (UTC)
Another Java update and restarting twice did not help. So reverted to the Jave version I had before the updates. I still have a strange error message, but it works again. Night of the Big Wind talk 14:36, 27 June 2012 (UTC)

I have the same problem as well. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 03:05, 1 July 2012 (UTC)

It may be a problem with Java cache, can you try what's explained in this post? --NicoV (talk) 10:57, 1 July 2012 (UTC)
Thank you very much. That was indeed the problem. Now I can go on. Thanks again. Night of the Big Wind talk 11:13, 1 July 2012 (UTC)

Done Proper page in WP space

I think the page should be moved from a subpage to userspace to a WP space. This tool is widely used and moving the page there will bring new willing contributors. -- Magioladitis (talk) 08:13, 8 August 2012 (UTC)

I'm all OK to move this page to the WP space, there's already WP:CLEANER which redirects to the documentation. I'm not really aware of enwiki procedures, so I don't know if anything is needed. If you want to move it to WP space, you're welcome :) . --NicoV (talk) 14:37, 8 August 2012 (UTC)
Thanks. Mostly done, and documentation reorganized, root page is now Wikipedia:WPCleaner. --NicoV (talk) 07:31, 21 August 2012 (UTC)

WPCleaner for fixing spelling and typography

  Resolved

Hi,

WPCleaner has been used for quite some time on frwiki to help fixing spelling and typography, based on regular expressions defined specifically for WPCleaner. I'm currently testing WPCleaner to be able to use regular expressions defined for AWB in Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/Typos. I'm currently testing it on frwiki and it's globally working.

I've started some tests on enwiki with the help of GoingBatty and Sun Creator, and it seems to be working.

If you're interested, you just need to create Special:MyPage/WikiCleanerConfiguration with the following (including the <source> tags) :

# Configuration for error 501: Spelling and typography
error_501_prio_enwiki=0 END
error_501_head_enwiki=Spelling and typography END
error_501_bot_enwiki=true END

# This parameter is used to configure WPCleaner for fixing spelling and typography.
general_suggestions_typo =
  Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/Typos END

When you find problems, just tell me in fr:Discussion_Wikipédia:WPCleaner#Suggestions_d.27orthographe_d.27AWB by filling at least the first column with the page title, and the second column with the regexp rule giving trouble. And you can add some explanations in the 3rd column.

Thanks --NicoV (talk) 10:58, 19 September 2012 (UTC)

More information in Wikipedia:WPCleaner/Spelling and typography. --NicoV (talk) 11:26, 25 September 2012 (UTC)

The spell checking feature has been completely refactord in WPCleaner 1.19. Tests are welcome. --NicoV (talk) 07:13, 8 October 2012 (UTC)
