Copyright Concerns edit

Are we allowed to use Copyrighted images in our Userboxes? It seems kinda sketchy to me, since more than likely these Copyrigh holders expected us to use their image only once yet we have it so it may be displayed on several thousand pages if so desired. Deathawk 15:51, 19 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

It is my understanding that no copyrighted images are allowed anywhere on WP and that images are assumed to be copyrighted and thus get removed, unless the poster can prove they are not copyrighted. User:AlMac|(talk) 09:40, 26 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

I presume we are refering to fair-use copyrighted images, and I don't really know, in the case that the copyright holder doesn't mind (as in the case of the firefox userbox), then I have to presume it is okay, however I am not fully sure of the wikipedia policy in that area... Ian13ID:540053 15:46, 26 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
To answer the question once and for all, no we can't use fairuse images on userboxes. JtkieferT | C | @ ---- 01:19, 29 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
Uh, no. The way I understand the Fair Use clause, using a small version in a userbox would qualify since it would be either social commentary or parody/satire, depending on the content of the userbox. --CJ Marsicano 18:48, 3 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
Depending on the content of the userbox, yes. They might not qualify as parody or satire. More importantly, it isn't automatically fair use if it contains parody or satire, because fair use isn't that simple--see the article. My main point is that it would vary very much from case to case. If you need a simple answer, I'm inclined to agree with User:Jtkiefer. EldKatt (Talk) 23:17, 3 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
Why not? I'm not challenging you, but some clear evidence somewhere would be nice. File:Anglo-indian.jpg Deano (Talk) 11:27, 29 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
They might not qualify as fair use in that particular context. Fair use is quite complicated, so clear evidence is much a matter of interpretation, I guess. EldKatt (Talk) 18:07, 3 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
EldKatt, see what I told Jtkiefer above. --CJ Marsicano 18:48, 3 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Trekker, dammit! edit

Can somebody PLEASE delete the "Trekkie" crack? Real fans are trekkers; the...dedicated fans (who can ID episodes by the color of the sky) are "trekists". Firefly/Serenity edit

Where's the Browncoat representation? It's quite surprising to see nothing in this area, given its spread presence elsewhere. I'd make some attempt to slap something together myself, but I just... suck at this type of thing. --Bacteria 09:34, 7 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Fair use and images on userboxes edit

Re-iterating what it says at Wikipedia:Userboxes, "The use of copyrighted work as fair use is not allowed on templates". A significant number of the interests userboxes are using fair use images, mostly logos. I've removed a small number of these but many more need to have these images removed. Based on recent events, it's likely that such activity is going to result in problems. Therefore, I'm asking (despite the presence of the above quote) if there is any defense of these images being used on the userboxes? --Durin 21:06, 16 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

  • Based on discussions at Wikipedia talk:Proposed policy on userboxes, I've reverted my removals. However, I don't think there's legal support for keeping these images on the userboxes. I'll defer judgement to others more knowledgeable. --Durin 21:24, 16 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Juggling, poi and circus skills edit

Fair use rationale for Image:Padi.jpg edit

Image:Padi.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 00:14, 6 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

I believe in magic userbox? edit

Is there an "I believe in magic/fairies" userbox? I would really love to have one that says that on my userpage, but I can't find it if it exists. And if it doesn't exist, I don't have the HTML skills to create one. Jcatgrl (talk) 02:17, 19 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

I can make one (or two) for you. What would you like it or them to say? - Ahunt (talk) 13:40, 19 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
One that says "This user believes that fairies exist" with a silhouette picture of a fairy, and one that says "This user believes in magic" with a magic wand or something similar. Thanks in advance! Jcatgrl (talk) 22:37, 27 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Okay those are easy! See what you think:
Code Result
{{User:Ahunt/Fairies}}
 This user believes that fairies exist
Usage
{{User:Ahunt/Magic}}
 This user believes in magic
Usage
I couldn't find a magic wand image so I used what I think is a fairly elegant painting of Circe holding her magic wand and offering the cup to Odysseus. If you would like something else it can easily be changed. It also turns out that magic on Wikipedia refers to dozens of different subjects. I linked it to Magic (paranormal) hoping that would be your area of interest.

Breaking up this page edit

The page is listed in Category:Pages with too many expensive parser function calls, which means the page needs to be broken up. I have been adding new sections and moving userboxes into these sections, which is in support of breaking up the page. Adding new sections also makes the page easier to search and less random. The two big sections Wikipedia:Userboxes/Interests#Various and Wikipedia:Userboxes/Interests#Other_Interests need to be merged together, and more sections pulled out of the merge. I don't yet have a proposal of how to break up the page, but that should be more apparent after more sections are created. Obankston (talk) 19:08, 30 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Update: I moved "Music listening" userboxes to other pages (most of them were already there) and deleted this section. That action takes this page off the list Category:Pages with too many expensive parser function calls. Obankston (talk) 20:33, 1 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
Update 2: I merged "Scuba diving" userboxes to the page Wikipedia:Userboxes/Sports since they were duplicating and changed the entries to a single link to that page. This page had a better sort order for the section, so the other page had its sort order changed. There are additional entries on this page that could be considered sports and maybe should be moved also, but there is some overlap between interests and sports. Enough userboxes have been moved out of this page so the Category:Pages with too many expensive parser function calls is not an issue at this time, so the page does not need to be broken up at this time. Obankston (talk) 15:29, 2 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
