Safari edit

I have a picture of the Safari icon, can I offer it here? -Fbv65edel 23:06, 25 January 2006 (UTC) Aha, it is already uploaded to Wikipedia. Should have known. Is there a way the userbox for Safari can be changed? -01:19, 29 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Gaiaonline Userbox edit

There is no link next to the gaiaonline userbox leading to a page with the userbox code. I have no idea how to fix this... anybody have a clue?

Userbox paths edit

Do I need to change the code at the start IE the Windows XP userbox code is

(brackets removed - User:The Raven's Apprentice/Userboxes/User MS Windows|XP

Do I need to change the bit in bold to my username?

pjb007 20:29, 27 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

No, you do not need to change the username. The userbox was created by User:The Raven's Apprentice and is stored on their page. Changing the username to your own would only make it a dead link. Also, I don't believe that this is the place for this question. This page is for discussing the content of Wikipedia:Userboxes/Computing. Crazed by Penguins (talk) 19:17, 27 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Gaim now known as Pidgin edit

The instant messenger Gaim has been renamed to Pidgin. I have created a Pidgin userbox, but how do we get the many Gaim users to realize this (or should we just modify the Gaim userbox some more? Should this page start listing this new userbox instead of the Gaim userbox?
--oKtosiTe talk 09:44, 11 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Perhaps we should wait until Pidgin 2.0 is actually released, since it's still Gaim until that happens. And then I think we should modify the gaim userbox. Dan0 00 13:15, 11 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Adding to this page edit

I made a coupple userboxes for Second Life but when I try to add them in the middle of a section they mess the page up in preview and jump to the top. Here's the code:

{{tlu|User:EllePollack/Userboxes/Second_Life_Resident|Firstname Lastname}}||{{User:EllePollack/Userboxes/Second_Life_Resident|Firstname Lastname}}
|-
{{tlu|User:EllePollack/Userboxes/Second_Life_Content_Creator|Firstname Lastname}}||{{User:EllePollack/Userboxes/Second_Life_Content_Creator|Firstname Lastname}}
|-

Can anyone tell me what's wrong? I thought I was copying the format correctly. EllePollack 03:02, 9 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

On the table, you aren't putting the userboxes in any cell, you need a pipe character (|) before each userbox, put this on the page

|{{tlu|User:EllePollack/Userboxes/Second_Life_Resident|Firstname Lastname}}||{{User:EllePollack/Userboxes/Second_Life_Resident|Firstname Lastname}}
|-
|{{tlu|User:EllePollack/Userboxes/Second_Life_Content_Creator|Firstname Lastname}}||{{User:EllePollack/Userboxes/Second_Life_Content_Creator|Firstname Lastname}}
|-

FORMATTING USERBOXES edit

You know I hope we're not going to turn Stalinist over the format of userboxes. I've already had someone change one of mine, and it made zero difference. They just couldn't live with the way it was. This is an open environment, some consistency is good but OCDing over it is wrong.--THE FOUNDERS INTENT TALK 03:18, 29 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

As I have already commented on my userpage, I have modified only one UBX this evening, that one with improper coding that was causing misaligning. The only thing I've edited otherwise is the display of the UBX in this directory, which has nothing to do with the format of any particular UBX. JPG-GR (talk) 03:34, 29 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Ok, then my apologies, it appeared to me that a whole page of boxes was changed. The tone of the message about formatting seemed to implay that all userboxes must be done exactly the same as far as the coding appears.--THE FOUNDERS INTENT TALK 12:56, 29 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Problems with this page formatting edit

I recently noticed that this article has a serious formating error or errors in its layout that causes the bottom 10% or so of the page to not display correctly at all. I have traced the introduction of the error to the Revision as of 05:29, 29 November 2007. Before that time the old versions of the page display the bottom correctly and since that edit they do not. I have tried troubleshooting the page to discover what the error is and correct it, but I have not been able to figure it out. Reverting the page to that point would eliminate a lot of useful work that has been done since that point. Can someone more knowledgeable than I am on formatting errors have a look and see if they can correct this problem? - Ahunt (talk) 20:36, 25 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

I have noticed this as well. There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the formatting. I am assuming this is why JPG-GR tagged the page for a split. Though I can't find anything about it on the discussion page, but his reason for the edit was "tagged to be split apart - page currently exceedes number of possible substitutions." This explanation makes sense, and is probably the reason for the formatting errors. Crazed by Penguins (talk) 19:46, 27 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
Well that makes sense, as when I edited near the end of the page by section the preview worked fine, although it did not when saved. In that case I think it should be split soonest before it gets even more messed up. Volunteers? - Ahunt (talk) 23:24, 27 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Splitting This Article edit

As tagged it has been suggest that this project page be split into shorter articles. Given the info above in Problems with this page formatting seem to be related to the length and number of templates in the article some quick action to restore this page seems warranted. Every time someone adds a new user box in the upper part of the page, another user box drops off the bottom into a "disformated" state. It would seem logical to split off the software section from the rest, including the following sections: 8 Software, 9 P2P File Sharing Clients, 10 Browsers, 11 Operating systems, 12 Other Microsoft Products, 13 Text editors. Does anyone have any objections? - Ahunt (talk) 11:40, 29 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Further to my note above - I will create sandbox "mock-ups" of the proposed split above and then link them here so editors can have a look at the result. Should be done by the end of today - Ahunt (talk) 12:14, 29 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
Okay I have done a test-split of this article in my own sandboxes. The split has corrected the problem found at the bottom of the project page where we are losing userboxes to "disformatting". This supports what Crazed by Penguins suggested, that the problem is simply driven by page length and too many templates on it.
If we are going to do this split we should do so fairly quickly before too many edits are made on this page! We would need to also update the "WP:UBS" template.
The test project pages for viewing are located at:
Computing userboxes other than software (This page are no longer active)
Software userboxes (This page are no longer active)
I would appreciate it if editors interested in this page would have a look, see what they think and post their thoughts here. - Ahunt (talk) 15:37, 29 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
Normally I would leave this comment up here for a week or so to collect feedback, but I am going to go ahead and split the page today for two reasons: 1. The page is damaged and not displaying the boxes at the bottom of the page due to the excess number of templates on the page and 2. It has been tagged for consideration of a split for a month now, since 30 November and there has been no objection to that proposal. If anyone objects to the split I would ask that they not revert the page back to its damaged state, but instead discuss other options here. - Ahunt (talk) 19:23, 30 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
Okay the split is now complete, including changes to the Userboxes templates and redirects. I have confirmed that both pages are now working correctly and that all userboxes are visible. So the problem with this page is now repaired, at least until it becomes overloaded again at which point another spit will be needed! - Ahunt (talk) 19:40, 30 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
Please note that the information split from this page is now located at Wikipedia:Userboxes/Software - Ahunt (talk) 23:24, 30 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
Everything seems to be in working order now! Thank you, Ahunt, for performing the split. Crazed by Penguins (talk) 02:06, 5 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

No problem, I learned a bunch in tackling this one! - Ahunt (talk) 02:39, 5 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Time for another split? edit

I noticed that when I added a new Userbox today that the page was fairly long. I also noticed when I looked at the separate Software page that there seems to be a lot of similar sections on both pages.

Examples -

  • Messaging vs. Instant Messaging/IRC
  • Mail addresses vs. Mail Clients
  • Portable Music Players vs. Music

Some Userboxes appear on both pages. Example -

This user uses

When adding my new Windows Live Mail infobox today, I didn't even realise that there was a similar section on a separate page until afterwards.

Rather than have to look at each page to find a suitable Userbox, I was wondering whether one or all of these similar sections should have their own page e.g. move all the Messaging items to a separate Messaging page.

This would have the benefit of making this page AND the Software page shorter, as well as making Userboxes easier to find.

I would be interested to know what other editors feel about this. Ozzieboy (talk) 20:30, 15 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Makes sense to me! I did the last split between "computing" and "software" because the "computing" page had become so long and included too many transclusion templates that the page was failing to function. It was a bit of an "urgent edit" to get the page working again, so may not have been 100% optimal. Splitting the overlapped areas, like "messaging" out into a new page would work fine as long as appropriate notes are left on the existing pages to prevent people adding them back in on the old pages. - Ahunt (talk) 11:41, 17 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Will Someone Plz Help Me edit

I'm new to making userboxes and i went to list mine in the computing categoryregarding home network speed, but i caused a template loop, can someone help me fix this please?

 --Koman90 (talk) 17:50, 11 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Another editor fixed the loop by removing the box. I just did some experiments and can't get it to install on the page right. I think the problem may be in the box address syntax and in particular the use of an "=" sign in the address. I would suggest moving the box page to a new address with a more conventional address and see if that helps. - Ahunt (talk) 16:07, 13 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

BBS boxes edit

I created some boxes to do with BBSing. Not sure if they should go under computing or computer software. Placing it in computing for now. Quistisffviii (talk) 09:01, 14 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Sharing Userboxes edit

I'm very new to userboxes. I am going to starting to create some and want to know where/how to share them with the community?

Here is my first attempt at making one.

 This user uses a K1 instead of paper books whenever possible.

Any help would be great.

Pjjasnica (talk) 20:25, 2 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Sharing userboxes is easy! Just have a look though the list on the template at Template:WP:UBS and pick the appropriate category to add it to. In the case of your userbox above I would suggest that it would best go on Wikipedia:Userboxes/Computing under hardware or Wikipedia:Userboxes/Media/Books in the top section under Reading. Do pay careful attention to the format that other userboxes use on those pages to make sure yours will display right. - Ahunt (talk) 21:45, 2 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
