Agenda for Manila 3? edit

Sky Harbor et al, as I mentioned in Seav's blog, Gus Vibal suggested we study how Tin Mandigma started Read or Die, which apparently is quite successful. Alternativity then suggested to also check-out New Worlds Alliance, which he is a member of. How about that for Manila 3? Perhaps we could invite key people from these orgs to give us an idea on how to start WMPH. Here are some particular things I want to ask them, top of my head:

  • Do you really need a foundation to be successful?
  • How many hours/week do you put in to handle something like RoD?
  • How do you manage volunteers who you only meet once a month or so?
  • How do you make all those tie-ups with companies like National, Powerbooks (but I guess this is quite natural for RoD... it would probably be educational institutions for WMPH...)?
  • How do you get publicity from mainstream media?

--Nino Gonzales 02:53, 20 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Regarding this concern, I think that you should also take into consideration jojit's update. If we can confirm this, then there would be no need to set up a foundation per se under the previous assumption that we had, it would only be a question of how to complete the process of registering the organization. Then the rest of the topics you brought up would fall into place. --- Tito Pao 03:06, 20 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
For Wikimedia Philippines, we need to have at least one community representative from the other Wikipedias and Wikimedia projects. Not all of them contribute to the English Wikipedia or go to the Tambayan. I don't want us creating decisions that affect them. --seav 05:29, 20 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
Let's recruit from the Tagalog Wikipedia. Some of us "en" people have accounts there right? --Lenticel (talk) 06:46, 20 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
I can represent the Cebuano Wikipedia. But let me get authorization from the community there.--Nino Gonzales 10:54, 20 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
This time you lead I follow --Exec8 13:23, 24 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Tin Mandigma commented on my blog entry and says she will glad to be of help. Who wants to be the temporary liaison between WMPH and RoD? I think either Alternativity or Nino Gonzales would do. --seav 07:07, 25 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Formal letter for RoD edit

October 5, 2007

Ms. Kristine Mandigma
Read or Die Philippines

Dear Ms. Mandigma:

The Philippine Wikipedia community wishes to invite you as the special guest of the 3rd Wikipedia Philippines Meet-up, a small and informal gathering of Wikipedians in the Philippines.

We are currently in our initial stages of building the Wikipedia community organization here in the Philippines. In our previous meet-up, we had a discussion with Gus Vibal of WikiPilipinas. Upon hearing our plans, he recommended that we talk to you, to learn from your experiences in starting Read or Die.

All of us in the Philippine Wikipedia community have a lot of admiration for Read or Die. We would be honored if you would consent to be our guest in our next meet-up. We propose to have the meet-up at 2-4PM either on October 20, Saturday, or October 21, Sunday. Please tell us if neither are convenient for you, and we propose other schedules. The venue will be SM Megamall. Please inform us if you have a preferred restaurant. The meeting will simply be an informal discussion wherein we hope you could share your experiences in starting RoD.

Yours sincerely,

The Philippine Wikipedia Community

Confirm availability, gift edit

Perhaps we could do it this way: 1) Select a date. 2) Send an email invite to Tin Mandigma signed by the community.

So following the pattern of our previous meet-ups (~2PM on Sunday), please indicate your availability for October--Nino Gonzales 02:13, 26 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

On a side-note, did I actually sound like a jerk in my comment? It’s impossible to read her comment without noticing the sarcasm.--Nino Gonzales 02:13, 26 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Am at work right now, so I'll try re-reading the draft letter and make suggestions on how to improve it (I love writing letters ;) With regard to her comments...I can't actually tell if there was some sarcasm on it. In the spirit of assuming good faith, I'd like to consider it as something like a self-deprecating joke or an inside joke known to widely-read persons...I mean, if it were me, you'd expect me to play around my being a call center agent =P --- Tito Pao 03:01, 26 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
Can we make our meeting on a Saturday night? Sunday is really a family day. November 3 would be fine for me. --Jojit fb 03:08, 26 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
The earlier the better. I am preparing for an entrance exam this Nov. (hopefully I'll pass). Sorry Jojit fb but I'm still for Sunday. --Lenticel (talk) 04:33, 26 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
We've been meeting on Sundays which i hate... they're family days. --Scorpion prinz (Talk | contribs) 08:51, 26 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
I'm actually okay with a Saturday meeting as long as I have advanced notice. That's because I'll need to look for a replacement organist for my Saturday anticipated masses =P --- Tito Pao 00:31, 28 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
I'll be busy weekends of October and November but I will try to sneek in at your agreed date and time. Maybe one to two hours of my time will do. --Exec8 20:04, 28 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
Let's try for a Saturday meet-up this time, as per User:Scorpion prinz's comment. --seav 06:45, 1 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
I changed the table to include Saturdays and October 12, a Friday and a holiday. --Jojit (talk) 01:52, 2 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

I think we should finalize the date. Everybody seems to be available on October 21 but if we have to consider Saturdays then we should make the meet-up on October 20 (2-4 pm). What do you think Nino and titopao? --Jojit (talk) 01:09, 4 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
I'm okay (so I hope) with the 20th as long as I have at least a week's notice. This is because I might need to absent excuse from my Saturday anticipated masses (so that I can look for a substitute organist =P --- Tito Pao 03:56, 4 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
Sat for me is difficult but not impossible. How about we do this: If no objections by tomorrow, I'll send the email asking Ms. Mandigma what option she prefers (20 or 21). Btw, do you think we should shell-out some cash to buy her a gift, perhaps a book? That's only proper, right, when inviting some guest? What do you think? --Nino Gonzales 11:18, 4 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
I agree. --Jojit (talk) 05:29, 5 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

SM Megamall wins. I just sent the invite, copying all the folks whose email addresses were distributed by Titopao. The version I sent is the one you see above as I sign this. --Nino Gonzales 11:24, 5 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Arggh... I just realized I made a grammatical error... "Please tell us if neither are convenient for you, and we propose other schedules." Isn't it frustrating to realize that you actually can't edit sent emails? --Nino Gonzales 11:30, 5 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
I added myself in. Check the table. --Sky Harbor 13:04, 6 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
Man, I already sent the invitation to Tin Mandigma before your entry, asking her to choose between Oct 20 and 21. I hope she chooses 21, so that you will also be available...--Nino Gonzales 03:22, 7 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
Based on his entry, Sky Harbor is available on both afternoons of the 20th and 21st. --Jojit (talk) 04:56, 8 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
By the way, what specific place in Megamall? I hope it would be in a less crowded place. Take note that SM Megamall will be having a mega sale from October 19 to 21. I suggest that we should meet at Starbucks at the 5th level where there is lesser people during a sale. --Jojit (talk) 04:56, 8 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
The Starbucks you have in mind is actually on the fourth level :) --- Tito Pao 07:15, 8 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
Oo nga 'no, I still have a hang-over of playing at Timezone in the basement yesterday and thought that Megamall has 6 floors (including the basement). ;-) --Jojit (talk) 07:54, 8 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
I will participate but I will need to wait for a final date and time --Exec8 00:17, 9 October 2007 (UTC).Reply
I added some notes. I indicate "50/50" for some dates (especially the Saturdays) for the reasons I've mentioned earlier. In addition...I'm actually moving to another job, which is why I'm currently on the go every now and then =P --- Tito Pao 01:01, 9 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

You guys OK with the idea of us chipping-in to buy our guest food and a gift? (please see below) --Nino Gonzales 03:49, 9 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Ok yung patak-patak tayo. I'm ok with the food. The problem is the book gift. What are the chances that she or her organization already have that book or better yet would our gift suit her taste? I'm not good in thinking up gifts so this is up to you--Lenticel (talk) 09:04, 9 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

shouldn't really matter if they have it :) It's the thought that counts, as they say... i'm sure her perception of our gratitude wouldn't be less if we give something she already has... but let me check this filipiniana bookstore near my place... i might find some first edition of some arcane filipino book which might appear more special and (more importantly) cheaper (hehe)... --Nino Gonzales 03:21, 10 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Gift for our guest edit

Name Book worth < 400
  • 100/W x 6W = 600
  • 200 for food
  • 400 for gift
?
Nino Gonzales OK ?
Jojit OK ?
? ? ?

Venue edit

Let's try a point system :) 3 = most desired; 0 = no way.

Name Megamall[1] A room in a school[2]
Nino Gonzales 2 3
Lenticel 2 2
Titopao 2 2
seav 3 1
Jojit 3 3

Where in Megamall? edit

Name Starbucks, 4th level ?
Nino Gonzales OK, if there is no other option ?
Jojit OK ?
seav OK ?

Can anybody scout around for a less trafficked cafe in Megamall? I think there's one at the northern end of Cyberzone (4F Mega B), and I recall another cafe across Cinderella (?) near the sporting apparel stores (UGF Mega A). I think any Starbucks is too popular for our own good. --seav 05:29, 9 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

We could also go with The Podium cafes since it's just a block away. --seav 05:30, 9 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

I also would prefer a less public place (I'm planning to record the meeting and post as ogg). If you guys like Starbucks, then the following cafes in The Podium would also be options: http://www.virtualtourist.com/travel/Asia/Philippines/City_of_Manila/Manila-1391614/Restaurants-Manila-The_Podium-BR-1.html There's probably a Starbucks there as well (what am I saying... there's Starbucks everyfrikinwhere!) --Nino Gonzales 03:16, 10 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
I vote for Podium. I think Megamall will be too crowded due to the sale. The Podium already has three cafes in front: Cafe Breton, Starbucks, and UCC Coffee Vienna Cafe. And if you really want Starbucks, there's a relatively empty Starbucks across the street from The Podium at the Anson's Building. --seav 13:56, 10 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
According to this site, there is a Starbucks at The Podium. --Jojit (talk) 00:49, 11 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
That's what I said. :) --seav 01:59, 11 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

In case you have not been following the discussion above, please indicate your availability for Manila 3 here: Wikipedia talk:Meetup/Manila 3. We are trying to get the head of Read or Die Philippines, a successful non-profit, to talk to us about her experiences in starting one. --Nino Gonzales 06:08, 26 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Oct 2 Updates edit

No one seems to have violent reactions to the formal invitation, so I will send that out this Friday, Oct 5. Before that time, we have to agree on the date. So far, the only day everyone is available is on Oct 21. However, Saturdays are being proposed, as well as Oct 12, a Friday and a holiday (the end of Ramadan). Please indicate your preferred meet-up place as well. --Nino Gonzales 02:07, 2 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Oct 9 Updates edit

Kristin Mandigma has accepted our invitation for Oct 21. The following needs to be decided upon:

  • The exact location
  • Gift for our guest

Final Venue and Schedule edit

  • Venue: Starbucks in The Podium, Ortigas, Pasig City
  • Schedule: October 21, 2007, Sunday, 2-4PM

Podium or Megamall?? edit

We have agreed when to meet but I am still confused where is the actual venue. --Exec8 13:59, 14 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

No one seems to have violent reactions against having the meet-up in the slightly farther (from the MRT) but much quieter Starbucks in the Podium, so I'm telling Tin Mandigma that we are meeting there (it is less than 7 days!).--Nino Gonzales 14:51, 15 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
I'm okay with the Podium, also because (per Nino's email) there's a sale at the Megamall, it's definitely not the ideal place for a meet-up during that time. --- Tito Pao 17:40, 15 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
