This course explores critical themes in Japan during the twentieth century. You will come away from this study with a sense of the history and the flow of ideas of that critical span of time; by extension, you will have a fuller understanding of critical issues affecting Japan today. Our source material will be cultural products, primarily fiction (short stories and novels), and film. We will be thinking about changing relationships within society: how society changes, how individuals change in their relationships to each other, how the landscape changes, how individuals experience and interact with their environments.

For the Wikipedia assignment I will have them fill out authors, books, film, of Japan content. A number of students will be able to translate. Often the English page can be augmented by class material.
