Assignment - Evaluate Wikipedia

Remember to add the exact name of the Wikipedia article to our Research Paper Plan google doc (with a hyperlink there back to the Wikipedia article itself).

Assignment - Make a small edit

The small edit can be copy editing one (or more) sentence(s) on the Wikipedia article of your choice (ideally the one you have already evaluated), or it can be adding a phrase or two to a Mainspace Wikipedia article.

Week 12

Course meetings
Tuesday, 11 April 2023   |   Thursday, 13 April 2023
Assignment - Choose possible topics

Resource: Editing Wikipedia, page 6

Assignment - Finalize your topic and find sources

For this, do only the "Assign yourself an article" part of the exercise. It's ok to skip the step of posting your bibliography to the Talk Page. For GS 121, you are each doing your scholarly research and building a bibliography separately for your research paper itself. Add and link your assigned article to your row on the Google Doc.

Week 13

Course meetings
Tuesday, 18 April 2023   |   Thursday, 20 April 2023
Assignment - Start drafting your contributions

Go to GS 121 Research Paper Google Doc, and add a line describing your plan for adding/editing your selected Wikipedia article. Also, update your research topic and your sources. All this, plus the above two trainings are part of your Week 14 tasks.

Note that your classmates have not yet begun drafting in your Wikipedia sandbox. So simply complete the Week 14 trainings (including generating the peer review sandbox), but we will wait to complete the actual peer reviewing itself in Week 15.

Reach out to your Wikipedia Expert if you have questions using the Get Help button at the top of this page.

Resource: Editing Wikipedia, pages 7–9

Assignment - India Research Paper

You will be submitting this separately on bCourses -- this is your GS 121 India Research Paper.

Milestones

Everyone has begun writing drafting text in their Wikipedia sandboxes, drawing on the research and writing of your research paper.

Week 14

Course meetings
Tuesday, 25 April 2023   |   Thursday, 27 April 2023
Assignment - Peer review two articles

Guiding frameworkThis week, Week 15, after your submission of your research paper, we will begin drafting in the sandbox (due 11:59 pm, Wed, April 26), and preparing for peer review (due 11:59 pm, Fri, April 28):

- remind yourself of your article and where you can add new text (or copyedit existing text)

- add a legend on your sandbox; here is a suggested format:

Legend

plain text = Mainspace article text

boldface text = my additions

italized text = copyedited text from Mainspace

- BEGIN DRAFTING/HAVE DRAFTING READY BY 11:59 pm. Wed, April 26: decide which parts of your final paper you can use (draw on, rewrite in encyclopedia voice, connect and fit into existing text); remember to use only those parts based on secondary scholarly sources which you can cite

- After you finish the "Guiding framework" training (see above), go to your home page and click on "peer review" next to one of the articles listed under "Reviewing articles". This will generate a sandbox where you can share your peer review. Do this twice, once for each article you have been assigned to review. Complete your reviews by 11:59 pm, Fri, April 28.

Milestones

Every student has finished reviewing their assigned articles, making sure that every article has been reviewed.

Week 15

Course meetings
Tuesday, 2 May 2023   |   Thursday, 4 May 2023
Assignment - Continue improving your article

Now's the time to revisit your text and refine your work. The images and media training module is optional (only if you have images you wish to add). Read and incorporate feedback from your peer review. Reach out to sign up for an appointment during RRR and/or exam week, to review your drafting before you move it to Mainspace (live).

Assignment - Polish your work

Continue to expand and improve your work, and format your article to match Wikipedia's tone and standards. Remember to contact your Wikipedia Expert at any time if you need further help!

Here's a rubric to guide your final edits:

121WikiEdu grading rubric:

  • 30% — The clarity of your plan for adding to Wikipedia (it's appropriateness for the Wikipedia articles and its relationship to your research this semester), detailed on the area/sector Google doc
  • 30% — The quantity and quality/relevance of the scholarly sources you cite on Wikipedia, and how substantially you use them in your drafting
  • 40% — Final drafting (this will be evaluated for quality not quantity -- albeit with the loose guideline of 500 words or 10-12 sentences); for including both facts and concepts/arguments, for how well it fits with the existing Wikipedia article text, and for its overall contribution to the Wikipedia article.
Assignment - Begin moving your work to Wikipedia

Now that you've improved your draft based on others' feedback, it's time to move your work live - to the "mainspace."

Week 16

Assignment - Final article

It's the final week to develop your article.

  • Read Editing Wikipedia page 15 to review a final check-list before completing your assignment.
  • Don't forget that you can ask for help from your Wikipedia Expert at any time!
Milestones

Everyone should have finished all of the work they'll do on Wikipedia, and be ready for grading.
