This is an assignment for a core course of the Global Poverty and Practice (GPP) Minor at UC Berkeley -- the course during which students prepare for their "practice experience" (PE). Each student will contribute to at least two Wikipedia articles – one focused on an aspect of the history/sociology of their PE site (eg. a country such as the U.S., Chile, Kenya, Malaysia ... or a city or region such as Lima, Peru or the San Francisco Bay Area); and the second focused on an aspect of key debates/approaches present in their PE sector (eg. water sanitation, community health, microfinance, worker-cooperatives, collective action, food justice, affordable housing).

Students enrolled in this course have been bringing material on global poverty and inequality to Wikipedia for eleven consecutive semesters (since Fall 2017) -- this will be the twelfth.

Assignment - Evaluate Wikipedia

Please pick 1-2 W.articles for your "area" and 1-2 W.articles for your "sector" - note these down also on our PE area/sector Google doc. Though you may work on this over Spring Break, it will be due at the end of Week 12 (when we return to campus).

Assignment - Add to an article

Your "small edit" can be copyediting a sentence or paragraph in one of your selected articles, or adding one line to such an article (along with a citation for it), or simply adding a citation to an existing sentence in one of your selected articles.

Week 13

Course meetings
Monday, 10 April 2023   |   Wednesday, 12 April 2023
Assignment - Exercise

For this, do only the "Assign yourself an article" part of the exercise -- and do this twice, once for your Wikipedia Area article and once for your Wikipedia Sector article. It's ok to skip the step of posting your bibliography to the Talk Page. In GPP 105, you are all doing your scholarly research separately for the other assignments.

Assignment - Start drafting your contributions

Reach out to your Wikipedia Expert if you have questions using the Get Help button at the top of this page.

Resource: Editing Wikipedia, pages 7–9

Milestones

Everyone has begun writing their article drafts. As you do, it may be useful to keep this rubric in mind:

105Wiki grading rubric:

  • 30% — The clarity of your plan for adding to Wikipedia (it's appropriateness for the Wikipedia articles and its relationship to your research this semester), detailed on the area/sector Google doc
  • 30% — The quantity and quality/relevance of the scholarly sources you cite on Wikipedia, and how substantially you use them in your drafting
  • 40% — Final drafting (this will be evaluated for quality not quantity -- albeit with the loose guideline of 500 words or 10-12 sentences each for area and sector); for including both facts and concepts/arguments, for how well it fits with the existing Wikipedia article text, and for its overall contribution to the Wikipedia article; your final drafting should include some area text and some sector text (though not necessarily exactly 50-50).

Week 15

Course meetings
Monday, 24 April 2023   |   Wednesday, 26 April 2023
Assignment - Peer review an article

Guiding framework

Milestones

Every student has finished reviewing their assigned articles, making sure that every article has been reviewed.

Week 16

Course meetings
Monday, 1 May 2023   |   Wednesday, 3 May 2023
Assignment - Continue improving your drafting in your sandbox or sandboxes

Now's the time to revisit your text and refine your work. Here, include feedback you may have received from your peer reviewer. Be sure all the key details and concepts and insights from your research for the Katz Memo and Needs Talk History have made their way into your area and sector drafting. Refine the writing. Be sure to switch from "essay voice" to "encyclopedia voice". Sign up for an appointment in RRR week and/or exam week to review your final drafting.

Week 17

Course meetings
Monday, 8 May 2023   |   Wednesday, 10 May 2023
Assignment - Polish your work

Continue to expand and improve your work, and format your article to match Wikipedia's tone and standards. Remember to contact your Wikipedia Expert at any time if you need further help! Here's the rubric again:

Assignment - Begin moving your work to Wikipedia

Now that you've improved your draft based on others' feedback, it's time to move your work live - to the "mainspace." The final task before going live is making an appointment on bCourses in RRR week with your instructor (that would be me, Clare) so we can go over your draft together.

Milestones

Everyone should have finished all of the work they'll do on Wikipedia, and be ready for grading.
