This page has a detailed summary of the history and progress of WikiProject Volcanoes. Hopefully, this archive of information will be useful to both this WikiProject and to others. It seems prudent to write it down before it is otherwise inevitably forgotten, or buried deep within edit histories.

Timeline edit
- March 17, 2007: Project created at 7:00 UTC. Three hours later, the first two participants joined.
- March 17, 2007: Tagging of articles with the {{Volcano}} template begins. During the tagging process, numerous improvements were also being made to many articles, along with cleanup of any talk pages which needed it. Although manual tagging is tedious, the opportunity it affords for viewing the landscape within a WikiProject's scope and beginning the process of making needed improvements is one major advantage over bot-assisted tagging.
- March 19, 2007: Over 370 articles tagged.
- March 20, 2007: Over 500 articles tagged.
- March 21, 2007: Over 750 articles tagged. Comprehensive cleanup of the subcategories in Category:Volcanoes started.
- March 22, 2007: Section on "Featured articles" added to project page. Category cleanup to eliminate redundant "Category:Volcanoes by region".
- March 24, 2007: Over 1000 articles tagged. More category cleanup, to remove the few volcanoes which were in Category:Craters.
- March 26, 2007: Section on "Issues of ongoing concern" added to project page.
- March 29, 2007: Over 1250 articles tagged.
- April 1, 2007: Project reaches 10 participants.
- April 3, 2007: Over 1500 articles tagged.
- April 11, 2007: Over 1750 articles tagged, finally over 1/1000 of the English Wikipedia (about 1,730,000 articles as of this date).
- April 15, 2007: Over 1875 articles tagged thus far, and tagging is nearly complete. Over 98% of relevant articles which existed at the time were tagged by this date.
- April 15, 2007: Separate tags created for {{Volcano list}}, {{Volcano category}}, {{Volcano template}}, etc. See "Article count" below for subsequent detailed numbers.
- April 16, 2007: Over 2090 total pages tagged, including over 1850 articles and lists.
- April 17, 2007: The WikiProject has been active for one month now, and much has been accomplished. Over 2000 articles, lists, and categories within the project's scope have been visited and tagged by project members during that time. Categories have been cleaned up and properly sorted, and hundreds of articles have already been improved, expanded, and most importantly referenced to reliable sources.
- April 22, 2007: Over 2140 total pages tagged, including over 1900 articles and lists.
- April 25, 2007: A new project portal, Portal:Volcanoes, The Volcanoes and Volcanology Portal, is created.
- April 28, 2007: In order to easily identify articles in need of attention, article assessments have been implemented.
- May 1, 2007: Over 400 articles have been assessed.
- May 3, 2007: Over 2200 total pages tagged, including over 1930 articles and lists.
- May 5, 2007: Over 1000 articles have been assessed.
- May 10, 2007: Over 1400 articles have been assessed.
- May 13, 2007: Featured pictures tagged with {{Volcano image}}.
- May 17, 2007: Two months. Over 2280 total pages tagged, including over 2000 articles and lists. Over 1600 articles have been assessed.
- May 17, 2007: A bibliography of useful references is now at Wikipedia:WikiProject Volcanoes/Bibliography.
- May 24, 2007: A list of useful public domain and free image resources is now at Wikipedia:WikiProject Volcanoes/Images, and a navbox has been added to project pages.
- May 25, 2007: Project reaches 20 participants. Over 1800 articles have been assessed.
- May 27, 2007: The initial assessment phase has been completed, and all 1923 articles which currently have {{Volcano}} tags have been assessed for quality and importance to the project. Over 2320 total pages have been tagged, including over 2020 articles and lists.
- June 17, 2007: Three months. Over 2340 total pages tagged, including over 2050 articles and lists.
- August 4, 2007: Almost 2,400 total pages tagged, including over 2,100 articles and lists.
- August 17, 2007: Five months. 2,411 total pages tagged.
- October 17, 2007: Over seven months, over 2,550 pages tagged.
- July 24, 2010: Portal:Volcanoes nominated for featured portal status. We are at 24 Featured (23 featured articles and 1 featued list) and 36 Good articles.
- November 11, 2010: We now stand at 26 Featured articles, 3 Featured lists, and 39 Good articles.
- October 23, 2011: 27 Featured articles, 3 Featured lists, and 45 Good articles.
