The Boeing C-17 Globemaster III in Australian service is operated by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). Four C-17s were ordered in mid-2006 to improve the Australian Defence Force's (ADF's) ability to operate outside Australia and its region. The aircraft entered service between November 2006 and January 2008, the first arriving in Australia on 4 December 2006. Two more Globemasters were ordered in 2011, the sixth being delivered to the RAAF in November 2012. Another pair of C-17s were ordered in October 2014, and the final aircraft was delivered in November 2015. All eight Globemasters are assigned to No. 36 Squadron and operate from RAAF Base Amberley, Queensland. The aircraft have supported ADF operations in Afghanistan, Iraq and other locations in the Middle East. They have also transported supplies and personnel as part of relief efforts following disasters in Australia and other countries. The C-17s are highly regarded throughout the Australian military for their ability to carry large amounts of cargo across long distances. (Full article...)

  • Support -- article has been maintained and judiciously updated since becoming FA, and be great to hit the 10-year anniversary of one of the more successful purchases in RAAF history. Blurb may need further tweaking but plenty of time for that. Cheers, Ian Rose (talk) 22:45, 5 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
