Wikipedia:Teahouse/Hosts/Database reports/Automated invites

Direct invitation is the primary way that new users find out about the Teahouse. But only a small number of invited newcomers show up, so manually invitations are not enough on their own. User:HostBot has been approved to send automatic Teahouse invitations, and currently sends out about 100 invitations per day.

Invite criteria edit

New editors are eligible to receive automatic invitations to the Teahouse from Hostbot if...

  • they created their account within the past 36 hours and have since made at least 5 edits.
  • the user has NOT already received an invitation to participate in Teahouse
  • the user has not been blocked from editing at any point since joining
  • the user has NOT received a level 4 user warning, or a sockpuppet warning

HostBot logs information about the new users it invites to the Teahouse in a MySQL database table on Wikimedia labs.

Personalized invites edit

Between July and September 2012, we performed an A/B test to determine whether new editors who received a personalized invitation were more likely to visit the Teahouse than those who received a generic invitation. The results of this experiment were indeterminate: guests visited the Teahouse at approximately the same rate under both conditions. Currently, all automated invites are signed by a Teahouse host.
