Introduction edit
Literary writing, part of the Kentucky Writing Portfolio, deals primarily with writing that explores and expands upon the human condition. That is to say that, while content knowledge is important and reinforced throughout these various writings, more emphasis is put on the development of stories, characters, plot, and the like.
Traits of Literary Writing edit
The writing that falls under the Literary Writing umbrella explores the following traits:

- focuses on some aspect of human experience
- contains elements that are characteristic of genre: plot (conflict, crisis, resolution),setting, character development, theme and point of view
- uses thoughts, actions, descriptions to develop plot, setting, character and theme
- develops the plot through conflict and resolution
- manages literary techniques and effective organizational strategies to communicate ideas and feelings to reader
- may use dialogue to enhance meaning
Examples edit
Some examples of this particular writing-style include:
- plays
- short stories
- graphic novels
- dialogues and soliloquies
There are countless other examples as well.
Final Notes edit
This section is considered optional, and may be skipped in favor of another section if the student feels more comfortable in that genre of writing. However, as this section allows for a great range of exploration and (dare we say it?) fun, it should be skipped at the writer's peril.
