File:Poly.pov

This was an important POV-Ray source code for generating several standardized images and animations of polyhedra. It's very important that this file exists somewhere. This is the second time this has been improperly deleted. If having a non-media file page is completely unacceptable on Wikipedia, then we should at the very least move it to some appropriate page elsewhere, like User:Cyp/Poly.pov or something (I believe Cyp was the original author). @LucasVB: Why is it "very important that this file exists" on Wikipedia at all? Wikipedia isn't a how-to guide, and shouldn't serve as a resource for software documentation or source code. A POV-Ray user would expect to find this file available somewhere on http://www.povray.org or on http://wiki.povray.org — which is where it really belongs. ~Anachronist (talk) 17:28, 27 November 2016 (UTC)
You clearly completely misunderstood the purpose of this file. POV-Ray is a program that allows the creation of 3D graphics by "compiling" source code text files which describe the geometry of the 3D objects, as opposed to typical programs with a graphical user interface. This animation I made, for instance, includes the source code for it in that page, which allows future users to modify or update the animation if necessary.
So that source code that got deleted isn't for the POV-Ray program itself, but for generating such 3D graphics. In particular, for generating the standardized green polyhedra (lower on the page) used throughout all of Wikipedia and its sister projects. Having the source code allows other users to generate more images in the same style as necessary.
It's a matter of having open-source media on Wikipedia that can be updated and edited in the future. It's no different than having articles being editable and open to modification, and it's part of the Wikipedia spirit.

You clearly completely misunderstood my response. I know very well what POV-Ray is. I use it myself. The fact that there is source code for generating various polyhedral shapes is irrelevant. The point is, Wikipedia isn't the place to keep and maintain software-specific macro files. There are places available on the net for keeping and maintaining such files. See http://www.povray.org/resources/links/POV-Ray_Include_Macro_and_Object_Files/Object_and_Scene_Files/ for example. It should be there. Or go to http://lib.povray.org/searchcollection/index.php and search for "polyhedra". You haven't explained why it's "very important" that this file exists on Wikipedia. Additionally, failing to assume good faith with accusations that the file was "improperly deleted" and that those responding to you here are somehow ignorant of the topic, isn't helping here. ~Anachronist (talk) 02:43, 28 November 2016 (UTC)
The file was created by a Wikipedia user to be used specifically for generating standardized polyhedra images for Wikipedia. That is precisely why User:Cyp uploaded the source in the first place. It has nothing to do with the general purpose archives you have mentioned, and it is not included in any of those. It has absolutely nothing to do with POV-Ray's project or its general community. Your suggestion of hosting it elsewhere feels like a silly arbitrary restriction. But it doesn't matter anymore, I got the source code from the Wayback Machine and I'll include it somewhere else, as the File namespace isn't appropriate. — LucasVB | Talk 03:18, 28 November 2016 (UTC)

I do think it should be somewhere, with a link to it from the image description pages (which it seems to be, now — thanks LucasVB). It doesn't really matter to me exactly where, but I think it's best all images on Wikipedia have the original source available (assuming they're generated from a source, that is). @LucasVB: I wasn't referring to a "Wikimedia Foundation project" like Commons. I was referring to a "WikiProject", that is, a project on Wikipedia itself, such as Wikipedia:WikiProject Mathematics. That project has sub-pages, such as Wikipedia:WikiProject Mathematics/Editor resources. The source code for that file could be on a similar sub-page and referenced from the editor resources page, so that it can be more easily found. Most of the talk pages for the polyhedron articles have a link to WikiProject Mathematics at the top, so that might be a good place to keep the POV-ray source code. ~Anachronist (talk) 21:46, 3 December 2016 (UTC)
@Anachronist:, but that's what I was looking for on Commons & Wikisource. These source files are useful across the entire family of projects, not just the English Wikipedia. Either way, you make a good point that it is worth finding Wikipedia projects where we can reference the source code as well. Perhaps I could even start a project for this kind of computational illustration resources. @Graeme Bartlett: This one I really don't understand, sorry, please walk me through it. The article Rashtrapati Award does not appear in its history or talkpage to be an Articles for creation. The original image was not an Articles for creation, either, it was my upload, as was the original article the image was in, The Bharat Scouts and Guides. The earlier hidden version on a green background is the award itself, I don't know why the green background was removed (so yeah, the green one is the proper version). Apparently, this Rashtrapati is issued to multiple organizations and walks of life, based on the article; the badge is the pocket dangle for the Scouts. I did not know before today it was also issued outside Scouts, nor that the article itself was part of Articles for creation. (There are a couple of British awards that can be Scouting or not, Duke-of-SomebodyIforgetrightnowoffthetopofmyhead Award, like this, and one other I saw recently and it made no sense to me until today) Awards from the Medal of Honor on down have illustrations of the award-this is a variant of the award in the article, so it seems to me proper to have an image. Pleas see WP:What Wikipedia is not, as these materials are never restored regardless of "improvements". The reason i hadn't edited the article is because nothing had changed. My partner and I had a baby and the caporumba activities were put on hold. Re-looking at the label, the international logo of Columbia Records, consisting of the label name within the music note symbol, doesn't look copyrightable in the US. However, the logo is probably meant for international distribution. I found one from 1957, possibly the earliest. If the logo is not copyrightable in the US, then the previous versions should be undeleted. @George Ho: I am not a lawyer, but I would think it's copyrightable. Although the logo consists of a circle, musical notes, and typefaces, the construction of those elements, with the words conforming to the shape of the eighth-note flag, is novel. It looks like a very similar construction as the Car Credit City logo described in the sidebar of the threshold of originality article, in which the CCC decoration by itself was deemed too simple to be protected, but a more complicated version, using an arrangement strikingly similar to that Columbia logo, was accepted for registration. Something to be cautious of is that it might not yet really merit a spinoff page, as the article for the show is not that long and there aren't that many released episodes yet. I'm not making a judgement call here, just saying that I've seen it argued in many places that a show doesn't automatically merit a list page for episodes just because they aired, not if there's enough room on the article and there aren't a lot of episodes that have yet aired. Deleting my article eliminates people's ability to inform themselves what The Bronx Times is. I am frankly in complete disbelief with this person's actions and ask that whoever monitors his actions here look into them more carefully. This totalitarian censorship approach is what we had during communism and fascism in Europe and should not be allowed here. Deplorable! I want my article restored and if needs changing then edited. You have the wrong idea about Wikipedia: it is not a place for people to tell the world about their own websites. As the websites owner, you should read WP:Conflict of interest and WP:Plain and simple conflict of interest guide.
Please also read WP:AGF. The deletion of your article has nothing to do with a vendetta and everything to do with Wikipedia's inclusion test, called Wikipedia:Notability, which asks for evidence of "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject." The references in the article at present are the website itself and a deadlink, which looks as though it was a list entry rather than "significant coverage".
