Luna moth caterpillar edit

3rd instar caterpillar of Actias luna

This image highlights the features of the third instar (molt) of the luna moth. It also clearly shows the outline of a silk pad these caterpillars create on the leaves for an anchor when they molt.; Appears in Actias luna, created by Shawn Hanrahan (Kugamazog)

Comments:

  • Cool caterpillar! Unfortunately this image probably wouldn't make it because of the distracting "blown" hightlights in the background. (try looking at some of the image problem examples on "What is a featured picture"). --Pharaoh Hound 11:51, 2 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Heh, that's concrete, it would be hard to make that less bright at 3pm in Texas :) --Kugamazog 13:14, 2 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • I agree with Pharaoh Hound. The subject is splendid. It is a pity, though, about the background. Another leaf, or other vegetation, or (best) shadowed vegetation would have made the subject stand out. I like the pose. Depth of field is good; the subject is very sharp from end to end.
