Renaissance edit

I found this article in a fairly shabby state considering its importance. I joined Wikipedia for the purpose of improving it, and I've been working hard since the beginning of April. I've added some 39 40 references and expanded and refactored it considerably since that time (some work done under username Tommaisey).
