List of HIV-positive people

Actually I was just working on getting this list more complete and sourced. But perhaps it could become a featured list eventually per their criteria. All critique is welcome. Garion96 (talk) 00:59, 10 October 2006 (UTC)

• It does look well referenced and I was impressed that there were a number of names that weren't from developed countries. I think I would be keen to keep the descriptions as short as possible though to keep the length down. I'm not an expert on any of the policies though, so you can take my advice with a pinch of salt. Some thoughts:

• The most important bits in WP:MEDMOS are issues concerning WP:LIVING and WP:V. A quick glance at your references gives the impression that you're choosing good quality sources. I published an audit on Talk:List of people with epilepsy of the references used for living people. If you can manage it, then that would make it easier for a reviewer to know that you've double-checked that important issue. I think it is vital with a sensitive list like this. Sometimes, it may be useful to have two sources, if one isn't so good but supplies a little extra bit of info you want.
• You could expand the lead a bit, whilst staying focused on the list (rather than just HIV). Perhaps certain issues of stigma, activism and "going public" could be summarised – particularly those that affect notable people.
• In addition to the mini bio sentence, could you add some brief AIDS-related facts? That way, the reader gets a lot of examples of how HIV has affected these notable people and can build up a picture better than a generic sentence or anonymous statistics. However, make sure what you say is backed up by the refs and not just the Wikipedia article.
  • I thought of that, but for many people on the list there is no info on that. Otherwise half of the people on the list would have the AIDS-related facts and the other half none. Garion96 (talk) 20:12, 10 October 2006 (UTC)
• How complete is the list? You might want to add the {{Dynamic list}} template to the list. Some suggestions for researching more names:

• Search IMDB for AIDS related deaths. Note: IMDB isn't a particularly reliable source, but will give you a huge list of names. Once you've narrowed it down to those in Wikipedia, you can search for more reliable sources. Ideally, the biographical articles on Wikipedia will have reliable sources you can reuse. findagrave.com can be used in a similar way.
• Use the "What links here" toolbox to find biographical articles on Wikipedia that are related to HIV/AIDS.
• The ArtistsWithAIDS source is a huge list, but doesn't tell you anything other than that fact. It's certainly a good starting point for expanding your list. Does the artist register with that org, or is this just a list of names they've collected? If the latter, then I'd prefer a better source. Another reason for choosing another source is that this one doesn't back-up your mini-bio. I'm relaxed if you've nicked the text from the lead sentence in the Wikipedia article, but your source should verify the main facts: occupation/claim-to-fame. A danger with such a raw list is that you have the right name but the wrong person/article.

I did indeed nicked the text for most of the newer entries. And only used the artists with AIDS list to source if the article itself already mentioned the fact of AIDS. But I will try to find better sources for some of the entries. But for some it's the only source I think, plus it's not about living persons. Concerning completeness, the list from artists with AIDS I already completely crosschecked. I will look at IMDB (can't use it as a source) and findagrave. I already have about 20 entries which can't be sourced (on my sandbox) mostly pornstars and the only source is a blog, forum or IMDB. It also was decided (before I worked on the list) to not include red links. Which I can understand, considering the vandal/nonsense magnet this list sometimes is. Thanks for your input. More comments:

• Certain cite templates need the date field wikilinked so it is transformed from ISO format to the reader's locale. Consider using month/year fields if you don't have the full date.

• Check you've always used the most appropriate template (e.g. news or press release) rather than just cite web. Some of the news links should have author field(s), but don't currently (possibly since they are incorrectly cite web).
  • done. Not all articles have the authors stated, that also explains why often there is no author field.
• The first two LA Times links don't work.
  • Except for one they all worked for me. The one which didn't worked I replaced.
• Weak refs: Franklyn Seales, Althea Flynt (NNDB), Jimmy McShane (Discogs is "user built"). For a list this size, I'm impressed with the overall quality of the links. Good work at finding alternative/extra refs for all the ArtistsWithAIDS names
  • I removed Seales & Mcshane, the only sources were wiki or blogs/forum. Found a better one for Flynt.
• Youri Egorov's and Sighsten Herrgård's refs should have the language field specified. Any others?

• Some of your NYT URLs could be shortened – you can safely drop all the parameters after the "res=" one.

• Wade Nichols's ref should have "www.time.com" rather than IP address for the URL.

• Félix González-Torres's ref has a broken date (shows red).

• Your table "class" should be wikitable, as prettytable is deprecated.
  • done.
• The "Lists of people with disabilities" category doesn't seem right. The List of people with hepatitis C is just in "Lists of people".
  • I don't know. See the lead in Category:Lists of people with disabilities.
    • That lead is a bit contradictory. A chronic illness could be disabling, but can you say that someone with HIV is "disabled" unless/until they have been incapacitated by some other illness? Colin°^Talk 08:17, 13 October 2006 (UTC)

• At FLC, someone will ask "Surely this list can't be comprehensive – look there only one scientist" ;-). A section with only one entry doesn't make much sense. Either hunt down some more scientists or move to Misc. I'm a bit surprised the Sport section isn't bigger.
