Wikipedia:Peer review/List of Asian Australian politicians/archive1

List of Asian Australian politicians edit

I've listed this article for peer review because it concerns an important topic, especially in an Australian political and socio-cultural context, but I want to ensure that the information is presented in a verifiable and noteworthy way. It can be difficult to find external sources for the ethnicity of state- and territory-level politicians, without relying primarily on the categories that their individual Wikipedia articles have been placed into. I am looking for suggestions on whether/how to improve the structure and referencing of these lists, and whether there is scope or need for further background before the lists.

@Neegzistuoja In general, Australian English and British English differ on the use of "Asian" in that the former usually implies peoples of East Asia (North-East and South-East), whereas the latter usually refers to people from South Asia and can exclude those from China (who are simply "Chinese"). However, neither, as far as I'm aware, include West Asia (the Middle East) within a common understanding of "Asian", ie who is British-Asian or Asian-Australian. Furthermore, the Australian Bureau of Statistics does not classify people from West Asia (Middle East) as Asian-Australian (in particular, see Australian Standard Classification of Cultural and Ethnic Groups (ASCCEG), 2019). The inclusion of Lebanese-Australians here is original research.
I'd also point you to an RfC that recently closed regarding the inclusion of a US politician on a list of minority politicians. The reason I highlight this is that there are politicians on this list which do not appear to identify as "Asian-Australian" but have been included because of their descent. To say the least, this is contentious. Overall, more specific sourcing is required regarding the identities of these politicians, rather than their lineages.
