I would like to get this article up to GA (or, dare I say it, FA) status. I don't want to formally nominate because I don't think it is nearly ready. I would just like a few editors to quickly glance over it for mistakes and places for improvement.

I'd suggest looking at United States Numbered Highways for a Good Article on a highway system for other suggestions as well. Beyond that, cite everything to good sources, and avoid using roadgeek websites. Imzadi 1979 → 04:26, 16 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Something that has been on my "get round to it" list for years is to add a criticisms section, focusing on the urban decay, suburban sprawl, and other affects that have been blamed on the system and the culture shifts of suddenly having high-speed access from the city center to the, then, outside. There was a PBS documentary that aired for the 50th anniversary of the Interstate Highway System that had some great info about this, including the negative impacts of the construction on desegregation efforts in the south, which were just gaining traction when suddenly a huge wall of construction created a physical obstacle to the efforts. The source used in this article for the claim of the Papago Freeway Tunnel being the last piece of I-10 to open mentions the criticisms of the homogeneity of the system and how it was destroying regional cultural identities and how the planners learned from this criticism and more recent highway construction now includes regional elements.

As for other parts of the article, IMO the info on speed limits and mile markers needs to be pruned. These do merit mentions, but what is there is un-sourced and full of trivial details.Dave (talk) 17:06, 17 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Building off a comment from Dave, but the construction of I-496 (currently at FAC) is credited with helping to desegregate Lansing, Michigan. The short version is that the freeway plowed through a historically black neighborhood, and rather than fight the freeway, the community used the property buyouts to disperse through various neighborhoods in the city. There are plenty of books and other sources that can be used, and I'd suggest that we (collectively) rely on those books wherever possible instead of parroting FHWA and AASHTO sources. Some details may be best from the gov't, but given the topic, we can include a lot of secondary scholarship here. Imzadi 1979 → 17:51, 17 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
