Delhi is one of Metropolitan cities in India. Three of five metropolitan cities are already featured article. Kolkata is being presently peer reviewed. After working on this article, we can have first featured topic about India.

Hmm is Bangalore considered a metro city now? In Indian Metropolitian cities page I see that it is upgraded as an A-1 city. However, the link from TOI that reported this also states that Hyderabad is an A-1 city? Is A-1 = Metro city?--Blacksun 22:43, 14 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I believe A-1=Metro city. According to {{Metropolitan cities of India}}, there are 5 metro cities which are A-1 cities. Can you provide TOI link on Status of Indian cities page. So that it can be considered an A-1 city and according to that some changes can be made in template.
Well the existing link in the reference on that page states: "This will mean a hike in house rent allowance (HRA) and city compensatory allowance (CCA) for central government employees bringing them on par with their counterparts in New Delhi, Kolkata and Hyderabad." However, now that I think about it, its probably usual desi newspaper typo. --Blacksun 17:25, 15 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
In addition to that, according to List of most populous cities in India, Ahmedabad is next to these 5 metropolitan cities. If Hyderabad, India is considered as Metro city, we should assume Ahmedabad as same status. Shyam (T/C) 06:44, 15 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I could have sworn that I saw another list in past couple of days where Ahmedabad was below Hyderabad in terms of population. --Blacksun 17:22, 15 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Blacksun, you are absolutely right. I have also seen the list which has different statics but it includes urban agglomeration. If we consider a city which is metropolitan, I think we consider urban agglomeration. So Hyderabad should have upper priority when we consider metropolitan cities. Please provide a reliable citation followed by proper modifications, if needed. Shyam (T/C) 21:31, 15 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Capital city of India... definately needs some upgrade. :) --Andy123(talk) 19:53, 19 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I think there seems to be some confusion over the terms "Metropolitan city" and the statuses of various cities. First, with respect to Status of Indian cities, this categorization is for the provision of City Compensatory Allowance (CCA) and Housing Rent Allowance (HRA) to government employees in these cities. This status is really only meant for government employees and has little significance to anyone else. One of the criteria for a city to be classified A-1 is that it must have a population of over 5 million. However, the classification is not automatic — certainly in the case of Hyderabad, they have been battling it over with the folks in Delhi as to when its status should change from "A" to "A-1".
Now, as far as the term "Metropolitan city". I think the term is dated. A few decades ago, the government referred Delhi, Mumbai, Calcutta and Chennai as the "Four metropolitan cities" of India. However, according to this NCERT textbook, any city with over 1 million people is now considered a "Metropolitan city". Which means there are 423 metropolitan cities in India! The chapter in the textbook goes on to mention that there are 6 "Mega-cities" in India, which would include Mumbai, Delhi, Calcutta, Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad. We should consider changing our Template:Metropolitan cities of India template to reflect this new reality. I had added additional comments in the template's talk page. Arejay, very thank you for providing information. But, I think you have misunderstood 1 million (106) by 1 lakh (105). India has 423 cities which have population more than 1,00,000 (indian way of writing numbers), in which 35 cities which have population more than 1,000,000. Well okay then, I stand corrected. There are 35 metropolitan cities in India! Incidentally, please read Nichalp's comments on the issue here as well. AreJay 15:59, 20 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
