Kelley Johnson references edit

The References section at Kelley Johnson is set up in a very odd, confusing way that I've never seen before, so I'm not sure how to fix all the red reference errors. Instead of full inline citations being attached to content in the body, the full cites, except 12 and 13, were added directly to the References section, with only nicknames in the body.   • The references are all at the bottom of the page and just the ref names are used in the body of the text. It makes it so when you edit the text you don't have to wade through reference information. The errors are because a reference was defined but was never actually used in the prose. Just delete the named references that are not used to fix the errors. See Help:List-defined references for more information. --Stabila711 (talk) 00:53, 22 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, but it just seems really odd doing it this way instead of the traditional way. And I'm not sure if you saw, but the hidden "instructions" in the Refs section says "citation templates are not forbidden". Czoal (talk) 01:00, 22 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah I saw it. The full comment is: While other citation templates are not forbidden, this basic template can be used, and it is placed here for convenience:. It was probably left by the original author as a helpful note. Personally, I prefer the list-defined references method since, as I mentioned above, it makes editing the text much easier. Especially on articles with a large amount of references. Also, you shouldn't change the style that is used on articles. There is no "traditional" style. The first person that adds a reference gets to pick what style they use and per WP:CITEVAR it shouldn't be changed. --Stabila711 (talk) 01:06, 22 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Learn something new every day. I just don't like it because filling in a template is much easier. Plus, there's no inconvenience of having to put sources in alphabetical order. Help:Cite errors/Cite error references duplicate key George S. Patton edit

Size of font edit

Hi dont you think the size of font in this website should be reduced?The articles have become so big that it is very difficult to read them.The fonts were smaller earlier.I think it was better.So what do you think?Arman ad60 (talk) 10:59, 22 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Arman ad60: I guess you accidentally used a zoom feature in your browser. In most browsers you can reset the zoom to 100% with Ctrl+0 or adjust it with Ctrl++ and Ctrl+-. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:11, 22 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I've noticed that Wikipedia looks different on different computers. The font looks bigger on my laptop than on my desktop at work, and on my old laptop it looked smaller. (archive.is) won't let me upload a new WWII article? edit

Hi everybody, I have been trying to upload my new article, Nazi Party nobility, concerning factual and historical developments following the Kaiser Wilhelm II abdication of 1918. Unfortunately, I keep getting this message:

I do not know what (archive.today.is) is about!? I presume it has something to do with Islamic State, (IS), which has no association whatsoever with WWI &/or WWII. However, my article often refers to the Nazi military ranks of SA & SS. I am probably wrong, but if anyone can point out the specific link, or links to (archive.is), in my article, I will remove them. Any help would be appreciated. Stephen. @Stephen2nd: Your browser probably has a feature to search a string on the viewed page, maybe Ctrl+F, F3, or ⌘ Command+F on a Mac. Just search for archive.is in the wiki source of the page. It occurs twice. .is is a country code for Iceland but often used by websites in other countries, maybe because "is" is a common English word. See archive.is for the website. How did you make the page if you don't know archive.is? I guess you copied from somewhere without following the attribution requirement in Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. Hi PrimeHunter and David Biddulph, thanks for the helpful F3 tip, (I didn't know it existed.) I did look at the RFC's but couldn't understand any of it, nor do I understand the query - How did you make the page if you don't know archive.is? With no disrespect, please accept that I am not much good with computers or Wiki-discussions, I'm still learning. Yes you are correct, I searched Wikipedia for correctly published quotes, on each of the (linked) old subject matters, and cut/pasted them into their (linked) reference sections, in the new re-phrased article. Cross referencing 270 named people with 22 states, houses, categories and references &c, I must have accidentally picked up the archive.is thing, and I have now used the F3 to remove these refs. @Stephen2nd: You could also just remove archiveurl=http://archive.is...|archivedate=... but keep the original references with their dead url's and {{dead link}} warnings. A reference with a dead link is better than no reference. If you copied from many articles then it may be difficult to credit all of them properly but if you save this in mainspace then I suggest you at least say something like "Includes content copied from many of the wikilinked articles" in the edit summary. Ideally you should link all articles you copied non-trivial content from, possibly on the talk page. You will just have to see whether it saves in mainspace or still triggers some filter. Am I a Reliable Source? edit

I have been in the software industry for 37 years and have first-hand information about companies, people and projects dating back to 1972. Often, I come across incorrect or incomplete information. For example, Lotus Development Corp had a product called 'Lotus Metro' which is missing from the list of projects for this company. Based on what I've read about contributing to wikipedia, it appears that 'stuff I know' does not qualify as content from a reliable source. Could someone please clarify? Thanks!! Correct, Tobarryspencer; reliable sources need to be published. Please read: Wikipedia:Identifying reliable sources. Is the real human Tobarry Spencer a reliable source with a reputation for having been published in a manner that establishes subject matter expertise and editorial oversight? Hello, Tonyb12567. To discourage drive-by vandals, certain operations require you to stop around for a few days. Once your account is four days old, and has made 10 edits (you've made 2 so far) it will be autoconfirmed. Venus Palermo edit

Actually, the help link was missing at the time of the post (see above section). The link appeared when I purged the page after seeing the post. I then made the exact same changes as you, clicked "Show changes" and saw no difference because you had already saved an identical revision the same minute. On a tangent PrimeHunter, the error messages gives the ref name with underscores, e.g., if it's <ref name="Washington Post"> etc., the error message says "Cite error: Invalid <ref>tag; name "Washington_Post" defined multiple times..." For me, the easiest way to begin fixing these is to copy the name and then use find while editing the page – but find will not work with the underscores, so I have to take them out. Any idea if there's a good reason to keep the underscores in?--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 23:45, 22 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I have thought about the same. The error message MediaWiki:Cite error references duplicate key is called with underscores in $1 whether the page had spaces, underscores or both. In most cases it probably had spaces. We could replace underscores with spaces in {{#invoke:String|replace|$1|_| }}, and mention the issue on the help page. Discussion should probably be at Help talk:Cite errors#ThisCite error: Invalid .3Cref.3E tag.3B name defined multiple times with different content.
