During November the resident also managed to catch up on TOIL time owed, and attended an all-staff away day at MGS.

Objectives & outcomes edit

WMUK Museums Galleries Scotland
G1: Develop Open Knowledge G1.1 help Scottish museums increase the quality of the existing open knowledge surrounding their collections.
G1.2 assist museums to make more open knowledge available through various channels and projects,
G1.3 work specifically with the Recognised Collections to make more open knowledge and images available through Wikipedia and their own websites licence free.
G2a: Develop, involve & engage WMUK volunteers
G2a.1 encourage and assist museum curators to become competent WMUK volunteers.
G2a.2 assist museum curators to help share their expert collections knowledge with other WMUK volunteers.
G2a.3 Work with other Scottish voluntary organisations to involve them where relevant in open data projects taking place in Scottish museums and galleries.
G3: Reduce barriers to accessing open knowledge G3.1 we will improve awareness of the benefits of open knowledge through education within the Scottish museum sector.
G3.2 we will actively work with a range of partners including the Scottish Government to help inform, develop and deliver a strategic action plan for responsible use of open data in Scottish museums.
G5: Develop, support and engage with other Wikimedia & Open Knowledge Communities G5.1 participate and encourage membership to the Scottish DigitaI Transformation Network.
G5.2 encourage partnership projects between Scottish museums to release their metadata licence free through API or other sources.

Developing Open Knowledge

  • A training day & mini editathon was held with staff of the National Trust for Scotland, and a number of good quality edits were made to Wikipedia, mostly concerning subjects pertaining to the properties.

Develop, involve and engage WMUK volunteers

  • The resident visited a venue in Fairfield, Govan, in advance of the Mary Barbour editathon to be held in January 2016. The venue is perfect (Rookie Oven offices at Fairfield), and has been booked. The resident continues to assist Flourbomb with the organisation of the event.
  • The resident trained a group of Heritage Horizons trainees at an event at the MGS offices on 11 November. These trainees are museums practice trainees on placement with various museums across Scotland through a scheme operated by MGS.
  • The resident approached a number of organisations about the possibility of holding an Art+Feminism editathon during the 2016 event weekend. There is some interest, but some of those contacted are already very busy at that time.
  • The resident continued to work with the National Galleries to prepare for their editathon & training day on 23 January 2016.
  • The resident answered questions by email from one museum concerning conflict of interest editing.
  • The resident tried again, without success, to find a trainer for the University of St Andrews training session. It is outwith my remit and I do not currently have the availability to do it myself.

Reducing barriers to accessing open knowledge

  • The resident met with representatives of the University of the West of Scotland and Paisley Museum, in advance of the editathon on 3 December. This model, of matching cultural and education institutions could be extremely valuable and worth replicating in the future.
  • Following the presentation made at the Tayside Museums Forum, the resident received enquiries from a further museum asking about working with Wiki.

Developing, supporting & engaging with other Wikimedia & Open Knowledge communities

  • The resident attended the OEPS Forum 3 event on Thursday 5 November, meeting a few open knowledge community contacts, learning about new linked data projects & open badging, and also making contact with a member of staff at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh, resulting in an invitation to speak at the organisation in December.
  • The resident was invited to and did submit a proposal for a presentation at the #OER16: Open Culture conference, taking place at the University of Edinburgh in April 2016.
  • The resident was invited to and did submit a proposal for a workshop at the University of Glasgow's Learning & Teaching conference in April 2016. This came about following the workshop given at the Universitas21 conference last month.
