Requesting to continue using IP of Brooklyn Library

Happy New Year Zzuuzz, I believe it was you who initially granted permission for me to use the blocked IP address of the Brooklyn Public Library system (which is 208.87.232.0/21 (talk · contribs · WHOIS)). May I continue in 2023? I think it expired in November 2022. Trillfendi (talk) 20:00, 10 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hello again Trillfendi. So I have a bit of a question. This seems to be quite a popular library, and there's been more than one user blocked for using multiple accounts whilst using it, which makes it a bit tricky to analyse. I noticed that there seems to be one other registered account in particular with timings and interests relatively similar to your own, for example sometimes editing the same pages around the same time, though not particularly in a way that I've seen which would violate policy. I wonder if this is something a) you know about b) may be interested in acknowledging, and c) whether you've seen WP:SHARE. There's no right or wrong answer and none is required, but I have to ask, and the answer may be helpful. -- zzuuzz (talk) 22:03, 10 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
Well that is certainly surreal and the first I’m hearing of this. This is my only account, I’m the only user; I don’t know anyone else in real life who edits Wikipedia and I make no point to tell people in real life that I edit for privacy reasons. So I can say under oath per se that I do not participate in sockpuppetry in any way or share accounts with anyone. I don’t know exactly how IPs work but sometimes I’m using the library Wi-Fi to edit on my own iPhone and use both Safari and Chrome (primarily Safari) and my celular data. As for the library itself, I would say it’s definitely popular it serves a population of over 2.5 million residents but outside of that aspect these are just average libraries scattered through the borough. We don’t have a gigantic central one like in Manhattan. Trillfendi (talk) 02:13, 11 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. Surreal stuff sometimes happens, but that's for me to worry about. The block on this range currently expires in about 196 days. You now have block exemption covering the remainder of the block. -- zzuuzz (talk) 06:27, 11 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

LTA

I'd recommend temporarily semi-protecting all of the pages being hit by that LTA since they'll keep coming back for who knows how long. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 20:26, 12 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

DeepNikita, 13 January

Hi, Zzuuzz. Just noting that I've carried out a long hard-block of 184.183.29.78 (talk+ · tag · contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RBLs · proxy check · block user · block log · cross-wiki contribs · CheckUser (log)), in line with your previous block of that IP. Please adjust with regards to collateral etc if necessary. Thanks, Sdrqaz (talk) 03:05, 13 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, both look good. -- zzuuzz (talk) 08:59, 13 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Suspicious user sandbox

Would you have a look at User:Test32768/sandbox and see if it's U5/G3 (Webhost violation/hoax)? It initially reads as a page deleted banner, but if you click on it, it claims to be an "admin user/pw entry form". Adding to the oddness is that the "date/time deleted" link goes to a Wikia page, NOT a Wikipedia delete log page, and the user it claims deleted this page (Enigma) is a Wikipedia editor, but they have NEVER edited on the English Wikipedia or this page, and has not edited since 2020, despite this "delete" being in 2022.

If you'd rather I submit this through a CSD form instead, I'd be happy to, I just didn't want to tip off the user. This sandbox is the user Test32768's only edits. Zinnober9 (talk) 22:39, 14 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

It does appear to be someone testing some styling. In the latest revisions unusual and slightly suspicious yes, but the forms do not allow entry, and the logs are probably made up (at least judging by the log number(s)). It doesn't ring any bells for me. Opinions probably vary about where testing becomes too much, but it's not a forbidden activity. I note that previous versions look legit, so the SOP if it 'offends' would be to revert (though I'm not particularly recommending that). -- zzuuzz (talk) 22:54, 14 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
Ok. Thank you for the insight. I'd found it due to the divspan flip errors on the page (usually none exist on all of En Wikipedia), but the more I looked at this page, the odder it felt to me, so I backed away. Good to know it doesn't function/allow form entry. It doesn't offend me enough to revert, so I won't attempt that. Thank you, hope you are having a great new year, Zinnober9 (talk) 23:12, 14 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Incoherent nonsense

This is exactly why banning an entire range because of ONE person is extremely stupid. I didn't choose it @Zzuuzz:, therefor real users will be hurt. You cannot stop me no matter how hard you try. Rangeban whatever third world country this IP is from, I bet that will definitely improve Wikipedia. 46.114.202.114 (talk) 00:41, 19 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

IP Block Exemption

Hi Zzuuzz I hope you are doing great? Could you please help me provide block exemptions for the following names;

Weird edits

I am seeing more and more edits like the ones by the following users:

Pure garbage, and entirely meaningless. Usually I feel that vandals have some sort of motivation, even if it's only to disrupt, but these edits are incomprehensibly pointless. What do you think, has ChatGPT joined us? Best,  Mr.choppers | ✎  02:56, 6 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

I believe the current name for this is User:AudiGuy-1204, though I'm sure that's not a first and I've seen others. I don't think they've devolved into AI just yet. Here's some others: this, this, and this. Both CHR52 and 789XYG seem to be an interesting subset of everything I've seen related so far, technically speaking, and I don't have a good theory about that at this time. To me, it looks like your typical obsessive problem child with nothing better to do trying to receive recognition in their otherwise empty life. -- zzuuzz (talk) 07:54, 6 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi Gooduserdude. We can only delete a whole edit summary, or not delete it. This seems to fall outside the scope of the revision deletion policy. I mean not everything fits into the policy, and we can bend the rules sometimes, but I'm not really seeing any need for it. Are you aware that Shim119 has requested that you be globally locked on Meta? Apparently, you blocked their IP and therefore your account must be compromised.--Bbb23 (talk) 16:48, 20 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Yes, thank you. This is, shall we say, an active topic of interest. Have a look at Sunday212 on meta. And of course I'm not compromised. Nope nothing unusual going on, business as usual it seems :) -- zzuuzz (talk) 16:59, 20 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
I didn't think you were compromised and figured you probably knew as well, but just in case you didn't... I do think you're more willing to compromise generally than I am, though. :p Is there a relationship between Shim119 and Sunday112 (usernames are similar)? I mean, it's not really all that important to me, but now that I've gone this far, I'm mildly curious as to what's going on.--Bbb23 (talk) 17:08, 20 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
I appreciate the notification. The chips will probably fall somewhere at some point. Is there a relationship is a complicated question that I am both meditating on and seeking advice about. In one sense the answer is yes. Could they in fact be the same person? I mean I get trolled a fair bit, but two glock requests in two days? Watch that space, I guess. -- zzuuzz (talk) 17:25, 20 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Extend protection for the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup

Please extend the protection of the article page about "2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup" from vandalism edit attacks by anonymous users until next month (2 May 2023). Thank you!
- Wardi 96 (talk) 01:21, 28 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hello. The article is protected until just after the scheduled draw, by which time we will have ample facts and reliable sources about the thing that got the article protected in the first place. If users can't operate with those facts in a responsible manner then the protection will be extended at that time. In other words, not yet. -- zzuuzz (talk) 10:18, 28 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Semi-protecting Template:Volcanoes of Oregon?

Hi, zzuuzz. I'm wondering why you semi-protected Template:Volcanoes of Oregon for a week? It only has 55 transclusions and has no recent edits (let alone recent vandalism). — hike395 (talk) 23:33, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi hike395. This template is transcluded on a featured article which will be on the main page (TFA) within the next week or so, and it was basically the only unprotected template on the article. The protection is timed with this in mind. There's a template vandal in town. I'm not sure how much extra detail you need, but hopefully that explains the gist of it. -- zzuuzz (talk) 07:23, 31 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Sockpuppetry

Hi! It seems like User:Vandman59 continues to create new accounts to vandalize Wikipedia, including User:Vandman60, which you recently blocked. Is there any ways to stop this user from continuing doing this? I read Wikipedia:Sockpuppetry carefully again, and we can only block this user indefinitely from editing. The person who loves reading (talk) 00:50, 5 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hello. Yes we can keep on blocking and reverting them, which is what we with a lot of vandals. It's kinda like watching someone bash their head against a brick wall until they pass out, which can sometimes be quite amusing. Maybe at some point a checkuser will block their IP addresses from creating accounts. It's difficult to be precise about if, when, or how either might happen. -- zzuuzz (talk) 00:59, 5 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi. I don't want to sound picky, but it's 2 and a half days. They used the IP for 7 minutes. Three days ago, they were on a different IP. A browse through the range doesn't show anyone staying on the same IP for more than a few hours at most, often less, and honestly I'd be amazed if they stayed still for that long either. Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Angelmunoz50

Bebel2024 was created on April 7 and has since created a large number of articles about deaths, including a lot of ones about deaths of animals. There are some similarities between this user and the accounts at Angelmunoz50, including username similarity, e.g., Yarina2021, but there are a significant number of dissimilarities as well. Bebel reminds me of another master that not only creates pages about killers/killings but also creates a lot of crime cats, which Bebel has done in spades. Unfortunately, I can't remember the master. Does it ring any bells for you? I'm going to also ping Spicy here because they have an amazing memory of different sock farms, and perhaps it will jar something loose.--Bbb23 (talk) 16:49, 28 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

I'm afraid I can't help you here - I actually encountered this account previously because someone tagged one of their drafts from CSD, and I found them incredibly suspicious, but I had no idea who the master might be. I didn't think of Angelmunoz50 - AFAIK,`that editor's thing is mainly messing around with the dates on existing articles, and they are in Spain, while Bebel seems to be from a Lusophone country. Bebel has been blocked on ptwiki before for basically the same things they are doing here. I did a bit of poking around on ptwiki because I figured if there was a previous account, it was probably there. I didn't have any luck, though. You used template intended for soft blocking on user:47.23.98.40/29. i think you should use a different template for such a hard block. Shim119 (talk) 21:08, 15 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hello again. Yes I think you have a point. I could have sworn that we had a hardblock template for doughnuts shops but I couldn't find it at the relevant time. I intend to revisit the block at some point and also add that it's a checkuser block. I will add that I did read the template right after I used it on this occasion, and I figured it was close enough for now. The appeal instructions say to follow the autoblock procedure, which is effectively the same as for a hard block. It's likely to trickle through to someone who can help relatively quickly. I also have to wonder how many other people are going to need to edit while they're eating doughnuts at 624 Bayway Ave. -- zzuuzz (talk) 22:04, 15 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

User:CheezDeez

Hi zzuuzz! I noticed when rc-patrolling on Meta that CheezDeez posted the following: "I just got blocked on the English Wikipedia for long-term abuse. I would like to know what happened. I mean no harm." You blocked them a couple days ago without talk-page access. Are you willing to provide them details/a more detailed reason, or should I tell them to take it up with ArbCom, or something else? — Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 02:14, 19 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi. I'm sure that they have a better idea of what's gone on than they're suggesting, but the block does need adjusting. I'm not inclined to unblock at this time without at least hearing from them, but to be fair I am somewhat undecided about it, so I'll enable talk page access so they can try and talk their way through it if they so wish. It's up to them to explain what happened, and then we can all take a closer look and I'll be happy to confirm what's plausible. If that doesn't work, you can ask me again if you're curious. @CheezDeez:. -- zzuuzz (talk) 04:42, 19 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

IP Block exemption request

Hello Zzuuzz, Please i will like to request another IP block exemption for this user, came to meet him at the open foundation west africa office and i have been asked to request for an IP block exemption for him. Below are his details.

User:Heatrave

IP address: 154.160.30.32 JDQ Joris Darlington Quarshie (talk) 14:36, 5 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Joris Darlington Quarshie:   Done (Heatrave please read the policy), initially granted for one year. Let me just try and establish something clearly as we sail down this path together. There are two types of Wikipedia editor in this world: there are those who edit stuff, and there are those who create articles about up-and-coming musicians, producers, and entrepreneurs. One of these types is less likely to be blocked, and more likely to have block exemption renewed. Any appearance of a conflict of interest is not going to down at all well. -- zzuuzz (talk) 18:14, 5 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks a lot @ZzuuzzI will communicate that to him. JDQ Joris Darlington Quarshie (talk) 19:31, 5 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thank you @Zzuuzz. I will take that into consideration. I will do well to comply with the policy as stated and abide accordingly.  :) Heatrave (talk) 11:36, 6 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

Rangeblock possible?

Hi, could you have a look at Talk:David Caron please; we have a rather persistent IPv6 user adding the same unsourced claim on talk (the article is already semi-protected), and we regularly need to semi-protect the talk-page too. I am not tech-savvy enough to do rangeblocks, so: would this be a case where we could do one (and if so: would you oblige?), or would collateral damage be too high? Thanks in advance for looking into it. Cheers and happy editing. Lectonar (talk) 11:08, 6 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi Lectonar. I'd be happy to do so, but I'd rather you consider accepting a learning moment. So here's some info: 2A00:23C7:85A1:A801::/64 (block range · block log (global) · WHOIS (partial)). True to WP:64, /64 seems to be the appropriate range here. Browsing through the contribs and using what I experience I have, I'd say it seems to have been static for at least 18 months and doesn't seem to be shared. That's the hard part over. One of the links shows that the network has been previously blocked 2 and a bit times (most recently by Deepfriedokra). There's also a link above to block the range. I'd expect to see something between a few months and a year or two this time. It sort of depends how likely they are to change their ways over that period. Anon-only would probably suffice, unless you suspect different. No collateral, it won't be reassigned soon, it's as straightforward a range block as they get. If you're still not comfortable or another admin doesn't get there first, I'll take it on for you. -- zzuuzz (talk) 12:12, 6 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks a million...explained like this, it seems rather too easy, and I was courageous enough to rangeblock for a year (I don't think that they will mend their ways quickly...it seems personal for them). Lectonar (talk) 12:26, 6 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
I'm not going to pretend they're all as straightforward, but yeah they can be straightforward and this one's a good place for a noob to start :) -- zzuuzz (talk) 12:39, 6 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for reinstating my edit on the Joseph DeAngelo page

I don't know why the other person deleted it. It was sourced from a legitimate newspaper source. Michelmybell (talk) 13:01, 6 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

No problem. It was just some vandal who happened to be passing. Nothing related to what you were doing. -- zzuuzz (talk) 17:16, 6 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

IP Block exemption request

Hello @Zzuuzz,

Please this is a list of some usernames within my community I will like to request for IP block exemptions for them. Since they will be contributing to the Africa Day Campaign.

I am also sharing this list on the admin noticeboard. So that this doesn't become a burden on you. JDQ Joris Darlington Quarshie (talk) 19:10, 7 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

(talk page stalker) I note that four of these (Zend2020m, Ennydavids, Useendk, and Yezzido) are blocked indefinitely. — Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 00:28, 8 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
Oh okay JDQ Joris Darlington Quarshie (talk) 07:43, 8 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Mdaniels5757Then we can focus on the remaining users. JDQ Joris Darlington Quarshie (talk) 07:45, 8 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
Also within the four, if any of them were not blocked due to bad faith contributions and can be exempted I will be glad if they are also exempted. JDQ Joris Darlington Quarshie (talk) 07:49, 8 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
They'll need to request unblock on their respective talk page. Gyanford already has IPBE. Two of the accounts don't exist on this wiki - please ensure (double-check) you have the correct names before I create them (in fact please double-check all names anyway). I'll probably get to this later today. -- zzuuzz (talk) 07:53, 8 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
Okay I have gone through the indefinite blocked accounts and I now understand why they have been blocked. So let's focus on the ones available. Thank you very much. JDQ Joris Darlington Quarshie (talk) 08:11, 8 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
Please the two accounts that don't exist on this wiki do have the same usernames on other wikis. So you can create them. JDQ Joris Darlington Quarshie (talk) 08:50, 8 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
  Done. -- zzuuzz (talk) 20:42, 8 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for providing IPBE for eligible users. JDQ Joris Darlington Quarshie (talk) 21:10, 8 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

IP Block exemption

IP Block exemption request

Hello @Zzuuzz please can you check out this list for me. Also the new users without the wikipedia accounts please go ahead and create an account for them for me.

Hope to read from you soon. JDQ Joris Darlington Quarshie (talk) 12:29, 13 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hello Joris Darlington Quarshie. So there's a bit of a detailed response. Two accounts don't exist on any wiki, so they have not been created here. The first listed account is clearly not their first account, judging by their contributions. Some accounts show no sign of needing IPBE. Some already had IPBE. User:Csam85 appears to be editing as User:Oralofori, not only that, they are editing the article Oral Ofori. I suspect User:Hope2049 is also likely strongly related, so that's going to need some explanation. In fact the more I look, the more likely I am to block them. The others have been granted IPBE. -- zzuuzz (talk) 11:37, 14 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
Great. Thank you so much for the feedback. For User:Csam85, kindly give me some time let me try and get some explanation from him. if he doesn't give me any tangible reason why he's also editing as user:oralofori. Then i will advice you block User:Csam85 and User:Oralofori indefinitely.
But in the meantime, kindly block user:Oralofori and User:Hope2049. JDQ Joris Darlington Quarshie (talk) 08:54, 15 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
