Apple Watch

Looks like this is just devolving into an edit war vs one (maybe two) IP editors. I'm not going to edit the page directly again today to make sure I don't violate 3RR but obviously if this continues, we'll have to find an admin to help restore the peace. WWB (talk) 18:19, 12 September 2014 (UTC)

Good question. I was thinking about putting a comment on the Talk page for this most recent IP address, although my assumption is that this is the same person behind a floating IP, so it might not do much good. My philosophy is always: it's OK to "lose" in the short term when you know you're going to "win" in the long term. In this case, I'd say we'll have shown an abundance of patience if we wait until tomorrow. WWB (talk) 18:56, 12 September 2014 (UTC)

I'm fairly certain it's the same anonymous person, as well. That two different anonymous editors would target the same article for the same reasons within such a short period of time seems extremely unlikely. Anyway, I've just completed a massive copy edit of the article, and I removed the templates in question once more while I was at it. Now, I'm going to wait and see what happens. If the templates do magically reappear on the page, I think waiting until tomorrow to contact an administrator is certainly reasonable. ~zziccardi (talk) 22:51, 12 September 2014 (UTC)

Never mind; I just checked the page. Sigh. Perhaps we should just leave the page as it is for a week or so and see if any other editors get involved. Yeah. Well, I went ahead and filed a dispute resolution notice, partly to see what the process is like. Might have to take this to a user conduct review, since the IP is, in my opinion, violating WP:NPA. That said, considering how often invocation of NPA is met with a counter-accusation of the same, I'm going to tread lightly. So, we'll see where it goes. So I finally found the time to do some research and rewrite the "Reception" section of the article, which I've now renamed Initial reception. I've quoted a bit more broadly, preserving some of the sources, but doing away entirely with the opinion polls. I'll be curious to see if there's any more activity here in the near future. Your description of the character Master Chief is wrong, according to all official literature of the fictional Universe of Halo. I've corrected it several times and according to edit history you revert the corrections... Please read the books to get a better idea of the nature of the character if you insist in being the one that last edit the page. Thank you

Please be careful about script date formatting

Per WP:DATERET, dates should be unified to the prevailing standard in the article - the date format is separate for in-prose dates, and reference dates. Using scripts to make changes like this [1] where you are normalizing away from the clear prevailing standard (in this case the use of YYYY-MM-DD for reference formats) is generally not acceptable, though discussion by consensus to make that change is a reasonable step. I would check some of your other edits too from looking at past used of the script. --MASEM (t) 21:54, 6 October 2014 (UTC)

From the message you left on my talk, please be aware that dates in prose and dates in references can be two different formats, so that "use myd dates" template (which I do agree applies to Valve's games) is only for prose dates, not reference ones. The bulk of the dates in both articles are using the yyyy-mm-dd format for date and accessdate for references, so this is acceptable and should not be changed without consensus per DATERET. --MASEM (t) 22:22, 6 October 2014 (UTC)

Fear not—having only learned of the script today, I've made a relatively small number of edits using it, and I'm more than happy to double-check my edits for any other errors I may have made while using it. Apologies for the intervention (and I'm not familiar with any processes at present), I actually found the article both well written and fascinating. I know Wiki articles are not for original research and I am certainly not interested in conspiracy games, but I did come away from this article with more questions than answers regarding the role of Pierre Soulé. As for your concerns regarding Ostend Manifesto, I'd highly recommend that you leave a message on the article's talk page, saying exactly what you told me here—that you found the article to be well-written and fascinating (which I'm glad to hear), but that you came away from it with more questions than answers as to the role of Pierre Soulé. (If you need help doing so, ask!) What you are looking at right now is my user talk page, a place where any editor may leave me a note or ask me, specifically, a question. User talk pages are different, however, from article talk pages, where any user may express concerns he or she may have about the content of an article, ask for the input of others before making major changes to an article, or otherwise make recommendations for improving the article in question. It may be the case that other editors believe going into more detail about Soulé's involvement would be beyond the scope of the Ostend Manifesto article, or, it may be the case that many others agree with you that more information about his relationship to the manifesto should be added to the article. This is why bringing the issue up on the article's talk page is so important—otherwise, there's no way to know how other editors may feel about your concerns.

I followed your advice re the Ostend Manifesto, it's a bit beyond my resources to assist with regard to any research on the matter at the moment - as always time can be an enemy. I am trying to gain some recruits to assist on some other articles that seem to need expansion and clarification where my previous life experiences (for good or bad!) might be useful. December 2014 GOCE newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors December 2014 Newsletter Drive: Thanks to everyone who participated in November's Backlog Elimination Drive. Of the 43 people who signed up for this drive, 26 copy edited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. Progress report: The November Drive removed 26 requests from the Requests page and 509 articles from the {{copy edit}} backlog. We copy edited 83 articles tagged in the target months; July, August, and September 2013. Together with tag removals from articles unsuitable for copy editing, we eliminated July 2013 from the backlog and reduced August and September's tags to 61 and 70 respectively. As of 01:01, 1 December 2014 (UTC), the backlog stood at 1,974 articles, dipping below 2,000 for the first time in the Guild's history (see graph at right). Well done everyone! Blitz: The December Blitz will run from December 14–20 and will focus on articles related to Religion, in recognition of this month's religious holidays in much of the English-speaking world. Awards will be given out to everyone who copy edits at least one of the target articles. Sign up here! Hello, ViPremierce. As several other editors, such as Prhartcom, have pointed out, it appears you are in a content dispute with Uaat. Please take a look at Dispute resolution, Wikipedia's policy on resolving disputes with other editors, as well as at the policy on edit warring; be especially sure to familiarize yourself with the three-revert rule, which both you and he or she have violated. The first step in resolving any dispute is to calmly approach the editor at his or her talk page and explain in a civil, polite manner with which edits you disagree and why. Assume good faith and try to achieve consensus. If you are unable to do so, you may wish to request outside input; seek mediation; and, if all else fails, contact the Arbitration Committee (although, in this case, visiting the administrators' noticeboard would almost certainly be a better option). Feel free to return here if you require additional assistance. Franchises

Hi. You seemed to disagree with my categorizing Frozen franchise article into the category for Disney franchises. You did have a point by saying that the article has already been present in a sub-category of the aforementioned one. However, I think that the article should be added to both the category of Disney franchises in general (since it itself is a franchise) and the category of the film (since the franchise is resulted from the film's success). If you notice in the Disney franchise category, other franchise articles are categorized in the same way. For now I have restored my revision in consistent with those. Hello, Quenhitran. Normally, I'd say that as per WP:SUBCAT it's unnecessary for an article to be added to a category when it's already in one of its subcategories, but it looks like that section is currently under discussion. You certainly make a good point about being consistent with other articles in Category:Disney franchises, so I agree that it couldn't hurt to keep the category on Frozen (franchise) and apologize for the inconvenience. VisualEditor News #2—2015

With Citoid in VisualEditor, you click the 'book with bookmark' icon and paste in the URL for a reliable source:

Citoid looks up the source for you and returns the citation results. Click the green "Insert" button to accept its results and add them to the article:

After inserting the citation, you can change it. Select the reference, and click the "Edit" button in the context menu to make changes.

The user guide has more information about how to use VisualEditor.

Since the last newsletter, the Editing Team has fixed many bugs and worked on VisualEditor's performance, the Citoid reference service, and support for languages with complex input requirements. Status reports are posted on Mediawiki.org. The worklist for April through June is available in Phabricator.

The weekly task triage meetings continue to be open to volunteers, each Wednesday at 11:00 (noon) PDT (18:00 UTC). You do not need to attend the meeting to nominate a bug for consideration as a Q4 blocker. Instead, go to Phabricator and "associate" the Editing team's Q4 blocker project with the bug. Recent improvements

VisualEditor is now substantially faster. In many cases, opening the page in VisualEditor is now faster than opening it in the wikitext editor. The new system has improved the code speed by 37% and network speed by almost 40%.

The Editing team is slowly adding auto-fill features for citations. This is currently available only at the French, Italian, and English Wikipedias. The Citoid service takes a URL or DOI for a reliable source, and returns a pre-filled, pre-formatted bibliographic citation. After creating it, you will be able to change or add information to the citation, in the same way that you edit any other pre-existing citation in VisualEditor. Support for ISBNs, PMIDs, and other identifiers is planned. Later, editors will be able to improve precision and reduce the need for manual corrections by contributing to the Citoid service's definitions for each website.

Citoid requires good TemplateData for your citation templates. If you would like to request this feature for your wiki, please post a request in the Citoid project on Phabricator. Include links to the TemplateData for the most important citation templates on your wiki.

The special character inserter has been improved, based upon feedback from active users. After this, VisualEditor was made available to all users of Wikipedias on the Phase 5 list on 30 March. This affected 53 mid-size and smaller Wikipedias, including Afrikaans, Azerbaijani, Breton, Kyrgyz, Macedonian, Mongolian, Tatar, and Welsh.

Work continues to support languages with complex requirements, such as Korean and Japanese. These languages use input method editors ("IMEs”). Recent improvements to cursoring, backspace, and delete behavior will simplify typing in VisualEditor for these users.

The design for the image selection process is now using a "masonry fit" model. Images in the search results are displayed at the same height but at variable widths, similar to bricks of different sizes in a masonry wall, or the "packed" mode in image galleries. This style helps you find the right image by making it easier to see more details in images.

You can now drag and drop categories to re-arrange their order of appearance ​on the page.

The pop-up window that appears when you click on a reference, image, link, or other element, is called the "context menu". It now displays additional useful information, such as the destination of the link or the image's filename. The team has also added an explicit "Edit" button in the context menu, which helps new editors open the tool to change the item.

Invisible templates are marked by a puzzle piece icon so they can be interacted with. Users also will be able to see and edit HTML anchors now in section headings.

Users of the TemplateData GUI editor can now set a string as an optional text for the 'deprecated' property in addition to boolean value, which lets you tell users of the template what they should do instead (T90734).

Looking ahead

The special character inserter in VisualEditor will soon use the same special character list as the wikitext editor. Admins at each wiki will also have the option of creating a custom section for frequently used characters at the top of the list. Instructions for customizing the list will be posted at mediawiki.org.

The team is discussing a test of VisualEditor with new users, to see whether they have met their goals of making VisualEditor suitable for those editors. The timing is unknown, but might be relatively soon.
